What Size Is a Baby at 6 Weeks Pregnant?

At 6 weeks of pregnancy, your baby is about 5 millimeters long, roughly the size of a pea. That’s around one-quarter of an inch from the top of the head to the bottom of the torso. Despite being tiny, a surprising amount of development is already underway at this stage.

How Big Is a 6-Week Embryo?

The standard measurement at this stage is called crown-rump length, which measures from the top of the head to the base of the spine (the rump) since the legs are too small to factor in. At exactly 6 weeks and 0 days, the average crown-rump length is 5 mm. By 6 weeks and 5 days, that grows to about 8 or 9 mm. Weight is nearly negligible, less than 0.04 ounces, or about one gram.

For a visual comparison, picture a single pea sitting on your fingertip. That’s roughly the size of what’s developing inside the gestational sac right now. Growth happens fast from here: by week 8, the embryo will roughly triple in length.

What’s Developing at 6 Weeks

Even at pea-size, this is one of the most active periods of development in the entire pregnancy. The neural tube, which runs along the embryo’s back, is closing during week 6. This tube becomes the brain and spinal cord. It’s the reason folic acid intake matters so much in these early weeks, since the nutrient supports proper closure of this structure.

Small buds are beginning to form where the arms and legs will eventually grow. The very earliest features of the face are taking shape as well, with dark spots marking where the eyes will develop and tiny openings forming where the nostrils will be. None of these structures look recognizable yet. At this point, the embryo is curved into a C-shape, with a visible tail-like structure that disappears in the coming weeks.

The heart, which started as a simple tube, is beating and can sometimes be detected on ultrasound. It’s dividing into chambers but won’t reach its four-chamber structure for a few more weeks.

What You’d See on an Ultrasound

If you have a transvaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks, your provider is looking for a few specific structures. The gestational sac is visible first, a small dark circle on the screen. Inside it, there should be a yolk sac, a tiny pouch that provides nutrients to the embryo before the placenta takes over.

The fetal pole, which is the earliest visible form of the embryo itself, is often detectable at around 6 weeks. It appears as a small thickening next to the yolk sac. Once the fetal pole measures 5 to 7 mm, a heartbeat can usually be picked up. At exactly 6 weeks, though, it’s common for the heartbeat to be right at the edge of detectability. If your provider doesn’t find one at this visit, they’ll typically schedule a follow-up scan a week or so later rather than drawing immediate conclusions.

An abdominal ultrasound (the kind done on top of the belly) often can’t pick up these details this early. Transvaginal ultrasounds are standard for 6-week scans because the probe is closer to the uterus and produces a clearer image.

Gestational Age vs. Embryonic Age

One thing that confuses a lot of people: “6 weeks pregnant” doesn’t mean the embryo is 6 weeks old. Gestational age is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period, which is typically about two weeks before conception actually happened. So at 6 weeks of pregnancy, the embryo has really only been developing for about 4 weeks.

This dating system exists because most people can identify when their last period started, while pinpointing the exact day of conception is much harder. When your provider says “6 weeks,” they’re using gestational age. If you see a resource that says “4 weeks post-conception,” it’s describing the same point in pregnancy.

Why Size Can Vary

Not every 6-week embryo measures exactly 5 mm. According to standardized dating charts used in clinical practice, a crown-rump length of 5 mm falls at the 50th percentile for 6 weeks and 0 days, but the normal range spans from about 5 weeks and 2 days to 6 weeks and 5 days for that same measurement. In other words, healthy embryos at the same gestational age can differ by a few millimeters without it meaning anything is wrong.

Ovulation timing is the biggest reason for size variation this early. If you ovulated a day or two later than average, the embryo may measure slightly smaller than expected based on your last period. This is why providers sometimes adjust your due date after an early ultrasound, using the crown-rump length to calculate a more accurate gestational age.
