What SPF Do Black People Actually Need?

Black people need SPF 30 or higher, the same broad-spectrum protection recommended for everyone. The American Academy of Dermatology makes no distinction by race in its baseline recommendation: SPF 30, broad-spectrum, and water-resistant. What does change for darker skin tones is the type of sun damage to watch for, where skin cancer tends to appear, and which sunscreen formulas actually work without leaving a white or ashy cast.

Why SPF 30 Applies to All Skin Tones

Melanin does provide some natural UV filtering, but far less than most people assume. Research published through the National Institutes of Health estimates melanin’s protective value at roughly SPF 1.5 to 4, meaning it absorbs somewhere between 50% and 75% of UV radiation. That sounds significant until you compare it to SPF 30, which blocks about 97%. Even at the high end, melanin alone leaves a large gap in protection.

The bigger issue is UVA radiation. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin than UVB rays and cause oxidative damage that leads to premature aging, dark spots, and uneven skin tone. UVA-induced tanning in darker skin happens through oxidation of existing melanin rather than creation of new melanin, and this type of tan provides essentially no additional photoprotection. In other words, getting darker from sun exposure doesn’t mean your skin is building a better shield. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is the only reliable way to block both UVA and UVB.

Skin Cancer Risk Is Lower but More Dangerous

Melanoma is far less common in Black Americans than in white Americans, and that statistical rarity creates a real problem: it gets caught later. From 2001 through 2014, the five-year melanoma survival rate among non-Hispanic Black people was 66.2%, compared to 90.1% for non-Hispanic white populations. That gap isn’t because the cancer is biologically more aggressive. It’s largely because diagnosis happens at a more advanced stage, when treatment options are more limited.

The type of melanoma most common in people of color also shows up in places you might not think to check. Acral lentiginous melanoma appears on the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and under fingernails or toenails. These are areas with little melanin regardless of skin tone, and they’re easy to overlook. Getting familiar with what your skin looks like in these spots, and noticing changes, matters more than any sunscreen for these specific locations.

The Vitamin D Tradeoff

One reason some Black adults hesitate about sunscreen is concern over vitamin D, and that concern isn’t unfounded. About 75% of Black Americans who don’t take vitamin D supplements have levels below the threshold considered adequate, and 17% have severe deficiency, compared to just 1% of non-Hispanic white adults. The gap is striking.

But sunscreen isn’t the main driver of this deficiency. Higher melanin levels slow vitamin D production in the skin, and modern lifestyles (spending most of the day indoors, wearing more clothing) compound the effect. Skipping sunscreen to boost vitamin D is an inefficient tradeoff. A daily vitamin D supplement of 1,000 to 2,000 IU addresses the deficiency directly without increasing your skin’s UV exposure. If you’re unsure about your levels, a simple blood test can give you a clear number to work with.

Choosing a Sunscreen That Actually Works on Dark Skin

The white cast problem is real, and it’s the single biggest barrier to consistent sunscreen use in darker skin tones. Traditional mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide particles that sit on the skin’s surface and scatter visible light, creating a chalky or grayish layer that’s especially noticeable on brown and dark brown skin. This isn’t a cosmetic nitpick. If a product looks bad, you won’t use it, and unused sunscreen protects nothing.

You have a few practical options:

  • Tinted mineral sunscreens. The American Academy of Dermatology specifically recommends tinted formulas for darker skin. Iron oxides in the tint offset the white cast and add protection against visible light, which can trigger hyperpigmentation in melanin-rich skin. Look for a shade that blends with your tone.
  • Chemical sunscreens. These absorb UV rays rather than reflecting them, so they go on clear. Common active ingredients include avobenzone and octinoxate. They work well under makeup and don’t leave residue.
  • Newer mineral formulas. Some mineral sunscreens now use smaller, more evenly dispersed zinc oxide particles in lightweight bases. These lay flatter against the skin and reflect light more evenly, reducing the visible whiteness significantly compared to older formulations.

How Much You Actually Need to Apply

Sunscreen is tested at a thickness of 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin. To cover an average adult body, that works out to about 35 milliliters, or roughly a shot glass full. For your face and neck alone, a nickel-sized dollop is the minimum. Most people apply about a quarter to half of what’s needed, which means an SPF 30 product functionally performs more like SPF 10 or 15.

This matters more than the SPF number on the bottle. Applying SPF 30 generously outperforms SPF 50 applied too thinly. If you’re using a tinted sunscreen as your daily moisturizer, pay attention to how much you’re putting on. A thin cosmetic layer won’t deliver the labeled protection. Reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors for extended periods, or immediately after swimming or heavy sweating.

What to Prioritize Day to Day

For everyday life (commuting, running errands, working near windows), an SPF 30 tinted moisturizer with broad-spectrum protection covers your needs. For extended outdoor time, layer that with a hat and sunglasses, and reapply sunscreen on exposed skin. Pay particular attention to areas prone to hyperpigmentation: the forehead, cheeks, and upper lip are common spots where dark patches develop from cumulative UV and visible light exposure.

Check your palms, soles, and nails periodically for new dark spots, streaks under the nail, or sores that don’t heal. These are the areas where the most dangerous form of skin cancer in people of color tends to develop, and catching changes early is the single most important factor in outcomes.
