What Time of Day Should You Take Wegovy: Shots vs. Pills?

You can take a Wegovy injection at any time of day. There is no specific hour that makes the medication work better or helps you lose weight faster. The only real guideline is to pick a time you’ll consistently remember, since Wegovy injections are given once a week on the same day. Wegovy oral tablets, however, follow a stricter rule: take them in the morning on an empty stomach.

Injection Timing Is Flexible

Semaglutide injections absorb into the tissue under your skin and release slowly over the course of a week. Because of this sustained-release design, it doesn’t matter whether you inject at 7 a.m. or 10 p.m. Morning, afternoon, or evening all produce the same effect. You also don’t need to time the injection around meals. Unlike some medications that require an empty stomach, the Wegovy pen has no food or fasting requirements.

What does matter is picking the same day each week. Many people tie their injection to a recurring event, like every Sunday morning or every Friday after work, to build a habit they won’t forget.

Oral Tablets Have a Morning Requirement

If you’re taking the oral tablet form of Wegovy, the rules are different. The manufacturer recommends taking each dose in the morning with no more than 4 ounces of plain water on an empty stomach. After swallowing the tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medications. This waiting period ensures the tablet absorbs properly through the lining of your stomach, which food and extra liquid can interfere with.

Unlike the weekly injection, the oral tablet is taken once daily, so this becomes part of your morning routine every day.

Picking a Day and Sticking With It

For the injection, consistency matters more than precision. You don’t need to inject at the exact same hour each week, but you should aim for the same day. If your schedule shifts and you need to change your injection day, you can do so as long as at least two days (48 hours) have passed since your last dose. After switching, your new day becomes your regular weekly schedule going forward.

Some people choose a weekend day so they can manage any side effects (like nausea or fatigue) without work obligations. Others prefer a weekday when their routine is more predictable. Neither choice is medically superior. Pick whichever day gives you the best chance of remembering.

What to Do If You Miss a Dose

If you realize you’ve missed your scheduled injection day, take the dose as soon as you remember, as long as your next scheduled dose is at least two days away. If it’s too close to your next dose, skip the missed one entirely and return to your regular schedule. Don’t double up to compensate.

Missing a single dose won’t erase your progress, but repeated missed doses can reduce the medication’s effectiveness and potentially worsen side effects when you restart, since your body partially loses its adjustment to the drug.

Making the Injection More Comfortable

Wegovy pens are stored in the refrigerator, and you can inject immediately after pulling one out. Some people find that cold fluid stings slightly going in. If that bothers you, let the pen sit at room temperature for a few minutes before injecting. Keep the cap on while it warms up. This is purely a comfort preference and doesn’t change how the medication works.

If you’re someone who tends to be more sensitive to discomfort in the morning before you’re fully awake, or if you’d rather not deal with the brief sting before bed, that’s a perfectly reasonable factor in choosing your preferred time of day. The best time is whichever time you’ll actually do it consistently, week after week.
