Adding a small amount of salt and sugar to water is the simplest, most effective way to boost hydration. This combination triggers a transport system in your gut that pulls water into your bloodstream faster than plain water alone. But salt and sugar aren’t the only options. Electrolyte powders, citrus juice, coconut water, and certain minerals all improve how well your body absorbs and retains fluid.
Why Plain Water Isn’t Always Enough
Your small intestine has a built-in mechanism that moves water into your bloodstream more efficiently when sodium and glucose are present together. A protein called SGLT1 acts like a gate: when it detects both sodium and a small amount of sugar, it opens and carries water along with them. Plain water still hydrates you, but it passes through more slowly and a larger portion moves straight through your digestive tract without being absorbed.

This ratio keeps the solution dilute enough that your gut absorbs it quickly without drawing extra water into your intestines (which is what happens if you add too much sugar).
You can swap the sugar for honey at roughly the same volume. Honey dissolves easily and provides the glucose your gut needs to activate that sodium-glucose transport system. If the taste is too bland or salty, a splash of lemon or lime juice helps without changing the effectiveness.
Sea Salt vs. Table Salt
Sea salt retains trace minerals that are stripped from table salt during processing, but the two contain comparable amounts of sodium by weight. For hydration purposes, either works. Sea salt adds small amounts of magnesium and potassium, though not enough to make a meaningful difference on its own. If you prefer the taste of sea salt, use it. If all you have is table salt, that’s fine too.
Electrolytes That Matter Most
Sodium gets the most attention, but three other electrolytes play important roles in how your body manages fluid.
- Potassium works alongside sodium to regulate fluid levels inside and outside your cells. Adults need around 2,600 to 3,400 mg per day, and most people fall short. Adding potassium-rich ingredients to your water (more on that below) helps close the gap.
- Magnesium supports muscle function and helps your body use potassium effectively. The daily target is 310 to 420 mg depending on age and sex. Low magnesium is common, especially in people who sweat heavily.
- Calcium plays a smaller but real role in fluid balance and muscle contraction. Most adults need 1,000 to 1,200 mg daily, primarily from food and drinks.
Commercial electrolyte powders and tablets typically contain all four of these minerals in balanced amounts. If you’re buying a product, check the label for sodium, potassium, and magnesium specifically. Some popular brands are mostly sodium with very little of the others.
Natural Additives Worth Trying
You don’t need a packet or powder to enhance your water. Several whole-food options bring real electrolyte content.
Coconut water is one of the most potassium-dense natural drinks available. One cup of store-bought coconut water contains about 470 mg of potassium and 30 mg of sodium, plus smaller amounts of magnesium and phosphorus. Mixing half coconut water and half plain water with a small pinch of salt gives you a well-rounded hydration drink without added sugar. The natural sugars in coconut water provide enough glucose to support absorption.
Lemon or lime juice adds flavor and a modest mineral boost. One whole lemon contains about 156 mg of potassium. Squeezing half a lemon into a glass of water won’t transform its electrolyte profile, but it makes salted water far more drinkable, which means you’re more likely to finish the glass.
A splash of fruit juice (orange, grape, or watermelon) can replace the sugar in a homemade rehydration drink. Use just enough to lightly sweeten the water. Too much juice raises the sugar concentration past the point where absorption slows down rather than speeds up.
When Electrolyte Water Actually Matters
For everyday hydration, plain water handles the job for most people. The electrolytes you lose in normal daily activity are easily replaced by food. Adding minerals to your water becomes genuinely useful in specific situations: exercise lasting longer than 60 minutes, heavy sweating in hot weather, recovery from vomiting or diarrhea, or mornings after alcohol consumption.
Endurance athletes face a particular risk. Drinking large volumes of plain water during prolonged exercise can dilute sodium levels in the blood, a condition called hyponatremia. Symptoms include nausea, headache, confusion, and in severe cases, seizures. Alternating between plain water and an electrolyte drink during long workouts is a straightforward way to prevent this. Even a pinch of salt in your water bottle provides meaningful protection during a long run or bike ride.
