Most bruises heal on their own within two weeks, but what you do in the first few days can reduce pain, limit swelling, and speed up the process. The basics are simple: protect the area, apply cold, and give your body time to clear the pooled blood beneath your skin.
First 48 Hours: Cold and Rest
A bruise forms when an impact breaks small blood vessels under the skin, letting blood leak into surrounding tissue. Your immediate goal is to slow that bleeding and minimize swelling. Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a thin towel (never directly on bare skin) for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, repeating every hour or two. If the bruise is on a limb, elevate it above heart level when you can. Sitting with your leg propped on pillows or resting your arm on a cushion above your chest helps fluid drain away from the injury.
Compression with a snug elastic bandage can also help, especially on arms or legs. Keep it firm but not tight enough to cause numbness or tingling. During these first two days, avoid heat, hot baths, and alcohol, all of which increase blood flow to the area and can make the bruise larger.
After 48 to 72 Hours: Switch to Heat
Once the initial bleeding has stopped, usually after 48 to 72 hours, warmth becomes your friend. A warm washcloth, heating pad on low, or a warm bath helps relax tight tissue and boosts circulation to the area. That increased blood flow helps your body reabsorb the trapped blood faster. Apply heat for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a day. Light massage around (not directly on) a tender bruise can also encourage circulation without causing more damage.
Choosing the Right Pain Reliever
If the bruise hurts, reach for acetaminophen (Tylenol) rather than ibuprofen or aspirin. Ibuprofen, aspirin, and other anti-inflammatory painkillers thin the blood slightly and can increase bleeding under the skin, potentially making the bruise worse or take longer to resolve. Acetaminophen controls pain without that blood-thinning effect. If you’re already taking a daily aspirin or blood thinner for another condition, don’t stop it for a bruise, but be aware that your bruises will tend to be larger and slower to fade.
Supplements That May Help
Bromelain, an enzyme extracted from pineapple, has some evidence behind it for reducing bruising and swelling. A common recommendation is 500 mg twice daily, and it’s widely available at pharmacies and health food stores. Some people also apply topical arnica gel, a plant-based remedy popular for bruise care, though the evidence for it is more mixed. Neither is a replacement for ice and rest, but they can complement your basic care routine.
What the Color Changes Mean
A bruise changes color as your body breaks down hemoglobin, the protein that makes blood red. These shifts are a normal sign of healing, not a reason to worry.
- First 24 hours: Red or dark pink, from fresh blood pooling under the skin.
- Days 1 to 2: Blue, purple, or black as the blood loses oxygen.
- Days 5 to 10: Green or yellow, caused by breakdown compounds your body produces as it processes the old blood.
- Days 10 to 14: Yellowish-brown or light brown as the last traces are reabsorbed.
On darker skin tones, the green and yellow phases can be harder to see, but the bruise still follows the same progression underneath. A bruise that hasn’t noticeably faded after two weeks is worth mentioning to a doctor.
When a Bruise Needs Medical Attention
Most bruises are harmless, but certain patterns deserve a closer look. Contact a healthcare provider if you notice any of the following:
- Vision problems alongside a black eye
- A hard lump forming in the bruised area (a sign of a hematoma, where a larger pocket of blood collects)
- Painful swelling that doesn’t improve or gets worse
- Pain lasting several days after the injury
- A bruise that won’t fade after two weeks
- Recurring bruises in the same spot without a clear cause
- Frequent or unexplained bruising that you can’t connect to bumps or injuries
Unexplained bruising can occasionally point to something beyond clumsiness. Blood-thinning medications are the most common culprit, but certain nutrient deficiencies can also play a role. Vitamin C deficiency is the classic example, while low levels of zinc or B vitamins can also make bruising more likely. These deficiencies are uncommon in people eating a varied diet, but they’re worth considering if bruises seem to appear out of nowhere or take unusually long to heal.
