What to Do for a Dry Nose: Causes and Remedies

A dry nose is usually fixable at home with a few simple changes to your environment and daily routine. The inside of your nose stays moist thanks to a thin layer of mucus (which can be up to 97% water), and when that moisture drops, you get that tight, crusty, sometimes painful feeling. The fix depends on what’s drying you out in the first place.

Why Your Nose Feels Dry

The most common culprit is dry air, whether from winter heating, air conditioning, or living in an arid climate. When indoor humidity drops below 30%, your nasal passages lose moisture faster than they can replace it. But dry air isn’t the only trigger.

Certain medications are a major and often overlooked cause. Antihistamines, the active ingredient in allergy pills, cold and flu products, and even some sleep aids, work by drying up mucus production. That’s great for a runny nose, but if you’re taking them regularly, they can leave your nasal passages parched. Decongestant nasal sprays are another problem: overuse can damage the nasal lining and make dryness worse over time.

Other causes include breathing through your mouth at night, using supplemental oxygen or a CPAP machine, hormonal shifts (especially drops in estrogen), and deficiencies in iron or vitamins A and D. Previous nose surgery, radiation therapy, and nasal injuries can also permanently change the tissue inside your nose, making it more prone to drying out.

Keep Indoor Humidity Between 30% and 50%

A humidifier in your bedroom is one of the single most effective things you can do. The ideal indoor humidity range is 30% to 50%. Below that, your nasal lining dries out. Above it, you risk mold growth and dust mites, which create their own problems. A simple hygrometer (available for a few dollars at most hardware stores) lets you monitor your levels.

If you run central heating or air conditioning constantly, a whole-house humidifier attached to your HVAC system provides more consistent coverage than a portable unit. Clean any humidifier regularly to prevent bacteria and mold from circulating in the air.

Saline Spray and Rinses

Saline nasal spray is the most straightforward remedy. It adds moisture directly where you need it, loosens crusting, and helps your nasal lining function normally. You can use it as often as needed throughout the day since it contains no medication. Premixed sprays are convenient, but a saline rinse using a squeeze bottle or neti pot does a more thorough job of flushing and hydrating the entire nasal passage.

If you use a CPAP machine, a saline spray at bedtime can help counteract the drying effect of pressurized air flowing through your nose all night.

Nasal Gels and Moisturizing Products

For dryness that saline spray alone doesn’t fix, water-based nasal gels provide a longer-lasting moisture barrier. These are available over the counter and can be applied just inside the nostrils with a fingertip or cotton swab.

Petroleum jelly is a popular home remedy, but it carries a real risk. Small amounts can be inhaled into the lungs over time, where the fat-based substance builds up and causes a condition called lipoid pneumonia, a type of lung inflammation. The Mayo Clinic recommends choosing water-soluble products instead. If you do use any oil-based product, apply it sparingly and not within several hours of lying down, when it’s more likely to travel toward your airway.

Sesame oil nasal sprays (sold under brand names like Nozoil) are a middle ground. In a clinical trial of CPAP users with nasal symptoms, a sesame oil spray significantly reduced nasal crusting and sinus discomfort compared to regular saline, and participants reported it made breathing through the nose noticeably easier. It’s a reasonable option if water-based products aren’t providing enough relief, though the evidence is still limited to small studies.

Stay Hydrated From the Inside

Your body prioritizes hydration for essential organs first. When you’re not drinking enough water, your cells won’t push as much fluid into mucus production. Normal nasal mucus is up to 97% water, so even mild dehydration can make it thicker, stickier, and less effective at keeping your nasal lining moist. There’s no magic number for daily water intake, but if your urine is consistently dark yellow, you’re likely not drinking enough to support healthy mucus production.

CPAP and Oxygen Therapy Adjustments

Dry nose is one of the most common complaints among CPAP users. A leaky mask is often the cause, since escaping air dries the nasal passages directly. Checking mask fit is the first step. Most modern CPAP machines come with a heated humidifier attachment, and turning up the humidification level can make a significant difference. If you use a nasal mask (covering just the nose), switching to a full-face mask that covers both the nose and mouth may also reduce nasal dryness and congestion.

The same principles apply to supplemental oxygen therapy. Humidifier bottles that attach to oxygen concentrators serve the same purpose, adding moisture to the dry medical-grade air before it reaches your nose.

Review Your Medications

If your nose started feeling dry around the same time you began a new medication, the connection is worth exploring. Antihistamines are built into a surprising number of over-the-counter products beyond allergy pills, including cold medicines, cough suppressants, pain relievers, and sleep aids like doxylamine. Check labels for ingredients ending in “-amine” or “-adine.” Newer antihistamines (cetirizine, fexofenadine, loratadine) tend to be less drying than older ones like diphenhydramine, so switching formulations may help.

Decongestant nasal sprays deserve special attention. Using them for more than three to five days can cause rebound congestion and damage to the nasal lining, leading to chronic dryness that’s harder to treat than the original stuffiness.

When Dry Nose Signals Something Deeper

Most nasal dryness responds to the measures above within a week or two. But if you notice a persistent foul smell from your nose, thick crusting that keeps returning despite regular moisturizing, recurrent nosebleeds, or a gradual loss of your sense of smell, the problem may be more than environmental. These are signs of atrophic rhinitis, a condition where the tissue inside your nose thins, hardens, and loses its ability to stay moist on its own. It’s more common after nasal surgery (especially procedures that reduce the internal structures called turbinates), in people with certain immune conditions, and in those living in hot, dry climates for extended periods.

Atrophic rhinitis requires professional treatment beyond home remedies. The same applies if your dryness is accompanied by facial pain, green or yellow discharge, or fever, which may point to an infection that needs a different approach entirely.
