Numb feet usually signal that one or more nerves supplying your lower legs aren’t working properly. The fix depends entirely on what’s causing the numbness, so the most important step is identifying the underlying problem. In the meantime, there are practical things you can do at home to protect your feet, improve circulation, and slow further nerve damage.
Why Your Feet Are Numb
Diabetes is the single most common cause of foot numbness. More than half of people with diabetes develop some form of nerve damage over time, and the feet are almost always affected first. Even in relatively well-controlled diabetes (average blood sugar levels near target), each incremental rise in long-term blood sugar increases neuropathy risk by about 20%.
But diabetes isn’t the only culprit. Autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome can attack nerves directly. Infections, including Lyme disease, shingles, and hepatitis B and C, sometimes trigger nerve inflammation. Inherited conditions like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease cause progressive nerve damage that often starts in the feet. Tumors, chronic alcohol use, toxin exposure, and vitamin deficiencies (particularly B12) round out the list.
Nerve compression is another possibility. A pinched nerve in your lower back, tarsal tunnel (the ankle’s equivalent of carpal tunnel), or even tight footwear can produce numbness in specific areas of the foot without any systemic disease at all.
When Numbness Is an Emergency
Most foot numbness develops gradually and isn’t dangerous on its own. But sudden-onset numbness, especially combined with weakness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control, can indicate a serious spinal cord problem or stroke. If you experience that combination, get to an emergency room immediately rather than waiting for a doctor’s appointment.
Getting a Diagnosis
Your doctor will likely start with blood tests to check for diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, and markers of autoimmune disease. If those don’t point to a clear answer, the next step is usually nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG), often done together in a single appointment.
A nerve conduction study sends small electrical pulses along your nerves and measures how fast and how strongly the signal travels. Damaged nerves produce slower, weaker signals. EMG involves inserting a thin needle into specific muscles to record their electrical activity at rest and during movement. Healthy muscles are electrically silent when relaxed, so abnormal activity at rest points to nerve damage. Together, these tests help pinpoint whether the problem is in your nerves, your muscles, or both, and where along the nerve pathway the damage sits.
Check Your B12 Levels
Vitamin B12 deficiency is one of the most treatable causes of foot numbness, yet it’s frequently missed. Low B12 is especially common in older adults, vegetarians, and people taking certain acid-reducing medications. What makes it tricky is that the standard lab cutoff for “deficient” may be set too low for nerve health. Research published in Neurology found that optimal nerve function required B12 levels roughly 2.7 times higher than the clinical threshold for deficiency. People with levels below that optimal range showed measurably slower nerve conduction.
If your B12 comes back “normal” but sits in the lower half of the reference range, it may still be worth discussing supplementation with your doctor, particularly if you have unexplained numbness.
Managing Blood Sugar
If diabetes or prediabetes is driving your numbness, tighter blood sugar control is the single most effective intervention. Neuropathy risk climbs with every sustained increase in blood sugar, so even modest improvements matter. This doesn’t mean perfection. Consistent, incremental changes to diet, activity, and medication adherence can stabilize nerve function and, in some cases, allow partial recovery of sensation.
Medications for Nerve Pain and Numbness
When numb feet come with burning, tingling, or shooting pain, medications can help manage those symptoms. The two drugs with FDA approval specifically for painful diabetic neuropathy are pregabalin and duloxetine. Gabapentin is also widely prescribed, though it’s used off-label for this purpose. These medications work by calming overactive nerve signals rather than fixing the underlying damage, so they’re most useful as part of a broader treatment plan.
Not everyone with numb feet has pain. If your main issue is loss of sensation without discomfort, medications are less central to your care. The priority shifts to protecting your feet from injury and addressing the root cause.
Exercises That Help
Numb feet create a hidden danger: you lose the subtle sensory feedback that keeps you balanced. People with foot numbness fall significantly more often, and falls are where serious injuries happen. Balance training directly counters this risk by teaching your body to rely on other cues (vision, joint position, muscle memory) to stay upright.
Effective exercises don’t require special equipment. A program studied in people with diabetic neuropathy included:
- Sit-to-stand repetitions (5 times per session)
- Weight shifting while standing, moving your center of gravity forward, backward, and side to side
- Functional reaches to the side and front while standing
- Toe stands and heel stands held for 5 to 20 seconds, repeated 5 times
- Step-ups and step-downs on a low platform (10 to 15 repetitions)
- Single-leg stance held for 5 to 20 seconds per side
- Tandem stance (heel-to-toe standing) held for 5 to 20 seconds
Start with shorter hold times and a wall or counter nearby for support. As your confidence grows, increase the duration and try the exercises on slightly unstable surfaces. Regular walking on flat ground also helps reinforce gait patterns. Even three sessions per week can meaningfully reduce fall risk over a few months.
Daily Foot Care
When you can’t feel your feet well, small injuries, blisters, and infections can go unnoticed until they become serious. This is especially critical for people with diabetes, where poor circulation slows healing and minor wounds can escalate to dangerous infections.
Build a daily foot check into your routine. In a well-lit room, look over every surface of both feet. You’re scanning for specific things: changes in skin color or thickness, dry or cracking skin, blisters, calluses (especially any with dark discoloration underneath, which suggests bleeding), cuts or sores, and signs of fungal infection between the toes. Use a hand mirror or your phone’s camera to see the soles if flexibility is an issue.
Beyond inspection, keep your feet moisturized to prevent cracks (but skip the lotion between toes, where moisture breeds fungus). Wear well-fitting shoes, and always check inside them before putting them on. A pebble or bunched sock that you can’t feel can create a wound in hours. Trim toenails straight across to avoid ingrown edges. If you notice any wound that isn’t healing within a few days, treat it as urgent.
Lifestyle Changes That Protect Your Nerves
Several habits directly influence nerve health, regardless of the specific cause of your numbness. Alcohol is toxic to nerves, so reducing or eliminating it removes an ongoing source of damage. Smoking impairs circulation to the small blood vessels that nourish nerves in your feet, and quitting can improve blood flow to those tissues. Regular exercise improves blood sugar control, circulation, and nerve function simultaneously. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces pressure on nerves and lowers inflammation throughout the body.
Correcting nutritional gaps matters too. Beyond B12, deficiencies in folate, B6, and vitamin E have all been linked to nerve problems. A varied diet heavy on vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats covers most of these bases. If you have kidney disease or another chronic condition, managing it aggressively helps prevent neuropathy from developing or worsening.
Even if nerve damage has already set in, these steps still help. They slow progression, reduce symptoms, and in some cases allow partial nerve regeneration. Peripheral nerves can regrow, though the process is slow, often taking months to years, and recovery is rarely complete once damage is advanced. The earlier you act, the more sensation you’re likely to preserve.
