What to Do for Stinky Feet: Remedies That Work

Stinky feet come down to one thing: bacteria on your skin breaking down sweat. Your feet have roughly 250,000 sweat glands, more per square inch than anywhere else on your body. The odor itself is mostly isovaleric acid, produced when common skin bacteria feed on an amino acid called leucine in your sweat. The good news is that a few straightforward changes to how you wash, dry, and shoe your feet can eliminate the problem.

Why Feet Smell in the First Place

Foot odor isn’t really about sweat. Sweat itself is nearly odorless. The smell happens when Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium that naturally lives on your skin, digests leucine in your sweat and converts it into isovaleric acid, a compound with a sharp, cheesy smell. People with especially strong foot odor also tend to carry a second species, Bacillus subtilis, on the soles of their feet, which ramps up the problem further.

Anything that keeps your feet warm, moist, and sealed in creates a perfect environment for these bacteria to multiply. Closed-toe shoes, synthetic socks, long hours on your feet, and skipping the space between your toes when you wash all contribute. Stress and hormonal changes can increase sweating, which feeds the cycle.

Daily Washing That Actually Works

A quick rinse in the shower isn’t enough. The bacteria that cause odor concentrate between your toes and along the sole, so you need to scrub those areas with soap every day. Use a washcloth or brush rather than just letting soapy water run over your feet. After washing, dry your feet completely, especially between the toes. Leftover moisture is the single biggest factor that keeps bacteria thriving.

Exfoliating with a pumice stone once or twice a week removes dead skin that bacteria feed on. Keep the stone clean by soaking it in an antibacterial solution weekly, and replace it every month since bacteria can build up in the porous surface even with regular cleaning.

Vinegar Soaks and Other Home Remedies

A vinegar foot soak creates an acidic environment that bacteria struggle to survive in. Mix one part vinegar to two parts warm water, enough to cover your feet, and soak for up to 20 minutes. You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Two to three soaks per week is a reasonable starting point. Some people notice improvement within a week.

Black tea soaks work on a different principle. The tannins in black tea act as a natural astringent, temporarily tightening pores and reducing sweat output. Brew two tea bags in a pint of water, let it cool to a comfortable temperature, and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Baking soda sprinkled in shoes overnight can also help neutralize odor between wears by absorbing moisture and shifting pH.

Socks and Shoes Make a Bigger Difference Than You Think

Cotton socks absorb sweat but hold it against your skin. Moisture-wicking materials like merino wool or synthetic athletic blends pull sweat away from the foot and let it evaporate. If your feet sweat heavily, changing socks midway through the day can be more effective than any product you apply.

Shoes need time to dry out between wears. Rotating between at least two pairs gives each one a full 24 hours to air out. If you can, pull the insoles out after wearing them so both the shoe and insole dry separately. Shoes made from leather or canvas breathe far better than synthetic materials. For sandals and open-toed shoes, odor is rarely an issue because airflow keeps moisture from building up.

Cedar shoe inserts absorb moisture and leave a clean scent. Activated charcoal insoles do the same. Either option is worth trying if your shoes tend to develop a permanent smell regardless of how often you wash your feet.

Over-the-Counter Antiperspirants for Feet

The same antiperspirant you use under your arms works on feet. Standard spray or roll-on antiperspirants with aluminum-based active ingredients temporarily block sweat glands and reduce moisture. Apply to clean, fully dry feet before bed so the product has time to absorb overnight.

For more stubborn sweating, clinical-strength foot antiperspirants contain higher concentrations of aluminum chloride. These are applied at night to thoroughly washed and blow-dried feet, then covered with plastic wrap or bags to increase absorption. You may need to do this two to three nights a week initially, and it can take up to six weeks to get sweating fully under control. Once it’s working, many people only need to apply it once or twice a week to maintain the effect.

Antifungal foot powders and sprays are worth trying if you suspect athlete’s foot is contributing to the smell. Fungal infections add their own distinct odor on top of bacterial breakdown, and the itching and peeling skin they cause gives bacteria even more to feed on.

When the Smell Points to Something Else

If your foot odor is unusually strong, doesn’t respond to basic hygiene changes, and comes with visible changes to the skin on your soles, you may be dealing with pitted keratolysis. This is a bacterial skin infection that produces a particularly foul, sulfur-like smell, distinct from the typical cheesy odor of regular foot sweat.

The telltale sign is clusters of small, round pits or craters on the weight-bearing areas of your soles, typically 0.5 to 7 millimeters across. These pits become more obvious when your feet are wet. The bacteria responsible actually digest the outer layer of skin, creating those characteristic craters. Pitted keratolysis is diagnosed visually and treated with prescription topical antibiotics, so it’s worth having a doctor look at your feet if you notice this pattern.

Persistent excessive sweating that doesn’t improve with antiperspirants could also point to hyperhidrosis, a condition where sweat glands are overactive regardless of temperature or activity level. Prescription options exist beyond what’s available over the counter.

A Practical Daily Routine

  • Morning: Put on clean moisture-wicking socks and dry shoes that have aired out for at least 24 hours.
  • Midday: If your feet sweat heavily, swap to a fresh pair of socks. A quick wipe with an antibacterial wipe helps if you can’t wash.
  • Evening: Wash feet with soap, scrubbing between toes. Dry completely. Apply antiperspirant if needed. Do a vinegar soak two to three times a week if odor persists.
  • Ongoing: Pull insoles from shoes after each wear. Rotate pairs daily. Replace pumice stones monthly.

Most people see a noticeable difference within one to two weeks of consistently following these steps. The key is reducing moisture and removing the dead skin that bacteria feed on. Once you break the cycle, maintenance is straightforward.
