What to Do for Trapped Gas: Home Remedies and Relief

Trapped gas usually responds well to a combination of movement, positioning, and gentle abdominal massage. Most episodes resolve within a few hours once gas starts moving through the digestive tract. The key is helping it travel past the natural bends in your colon, where it tends to get stuck.

Why Gas Gets Stuck

Your colon isn’t a straight tube. It has sharp turns, and one of the tightest is near your spleen on the upper left side, called the splenic flexure. Normally, gas negotiates this curve without trouble. But when too much gas builds up, it overwhelms the bend the same way heavy rain overwhelms a sharp curve in a river. Some people are born with an unusually tight bend there, making them more prone to discomfort. Gas trapped on the right side of your colon can even mimic the pain of gallstones or appendicitis, which is why it sometimes feels alarming.

Positions That Help Move Gas

Certain body positions use gravity and gentle abdominal compression to push gas along. You can try these at home on a mat or even in bed.

  • Knee-to-chest: Lie on your back, bend both knees, and pull them toward your chest. Tuck your chin down. This compresses your abdomen and is one of the fastest ways to get relief.
  • Child’s pose: Kneel on the floor, sit back onto your heels, then stretch your arms forward on the ground and let your forehead rest on the floor. Your torso pressing against your thighs creates gentle pressure on the gut.
  • Happy baby: Lie on your back and bring your knees up toward the sides of your body, soles of your feet pointing at the ceiling. Grab your feet and gently pull down. Rocking side to side can add extra relief.
  • Seated forward bend: Sit with your legs straight in front of you and fold forward from the hips, placing your chest toward your knees.

Hold each position for 30 seconds to a minute and repeat as needed. Even a short walk can help. Gentle, regular movement stimulates the muscular contractions that push gas through your intestines.

The “I Love You” Abdominal Massage

This technique follows the path of your colon to physically encourage gas to move toward the exit. You can do it lying down or standing in the shower. Use moderate pressure with your fingertips, always working from right to left.

Start by stroking from your left ribcage straight down to your left hipbone, forming the letter “I.” Repeat 10 times. Next, form the letter “L” by stroking from your right ribcage across to the left, then down to the left hipbone. Repeat 10 times. Finally, trace a “U” shape starting from your right hipbone, up to your right ribcage, across to the left ribcage, and down to the left hipbone. Repeat 10 times. Finish with one to two minutes of clockwise circular massage around your belly button.

Doing this once daily can help with recurring gas, not just acute episodes.

Over-the-Counter Options

Simethicone (the active ingredient in Gas-X and similar products) works by lowering the surface tension of gas bubbles in your gut, causing small bubbles to merge into larger ones that are easier to pass through belching or flatulence. It isn’t absorbed into your bloodstream. Adults can take 40 to 125 mg up to four times a day, after meals and at bedtime, with a maximum of 500 mg in 24 hours.

If beans, lentils, broccoli, or other high-fiber vegetables are your trigger, an enzyme supplement containing alpha-galactosidase (sold as Beano) can help. It breaks down the complex carbohydrates in these foods before your gut bacteria get to them, which is what produces the gas in the first place. You take it with your first bite of the problem food.

If dairy is the culprit, a lactase supplement taken before eating breaks down milk sugar so it doesn’t ferment in your colon.

Activated charcoal is widely marketed for gas, but the evidence is weak. One study found that commonly used doses produced no significant reduction in intestinal gas or abdominal symptoms. The charcoal’s binding sites likely get saturated during digestion, leaving nothing available to absorb gas by the time it reaches the colon.

Peppermint and Ginger

Peppermint relaxes the smooth muscles of the digestive tract. Two of its compounds, menthol and a related monoterpene, calm spasms and reduce overactivity in the gut wall, which can help trapped gas pass more easily. One caution: peppermint can also relax the valve between your stomach and esophagus, potentially worsening heartburn. If you deal with acid reflux, enteric-coated peppermint capsules bypass the stomach and dissolve in the intestine instead.

Ginger works a bit differently. Its active compounds help stimulate movement through the digestive tract and can reduce pressure on that same stomach-esophagus valve. A cup of ginger tea after a meal is a simple option. Both peppermint and ginger are most useful as ongoing habits rather than one-time fixes.

Foods That Cause the Most Gas

Gas forms when food reaches your colon without being fully digested. Your gut bacteria feast on it and release gas as a byproduct. The biggest offenders are high-fermentation foods: beans, lentils, onions, garlic, wheat-based products, certain fruits like apples and pears, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage. Carbonated drinks add gas directly.

Research from Monash University found that both healthy people and those with irritable bowel syndrome produced more gas and experienced more discomfort after eating high-fiber, high-fermentation meals. People with IBS, however, reported significantly more pain from the same amount of gas, suggesting sensitivity plays as big a role as gas volume itself. If you notice a pattern with specific foods, reducing portion sizes of those foods often helps more than eliminating them entirely.

Preventing Swallowed Air

Not all trapped gas comes from digestion. A surprising amount is simply swallowed air that works its way down. Common habits that increase air swallowing include eating too fast, talking during meals, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, drinking through straws, and drinking carbonated beverages. Smoking also contributes.

The fixes are straightforward: chew slowly, swallow one bite before taking the next, sip from a glass instead of a straw, and save conversation for after the meal. These changes tend to reduce upper abdominal bloating and belching in particular, since swallowed air often gets trapped higher in the digestive tract.

When Gas Pain Needs Medical Attention

Most trapped gas is uncomfortable but harmless. However, gas pain on the right side can feel identical to gallstone or appendicitis pain, so location alone isn’t enough to rule out something serious. See a healthcare provider if your gas pain comes with fever, nausea and vomiting, unexplained weight loss, sudden or chronic diarrhea, rectal bleeding, bloody or black stools, or fatty yellow stools. Severe abdominal pain that doesn’t seem connected to eating also warrants a visit, as does chest pain that could signal a cardiac issue rather than a digestive one.
