What to Do With a Stuffy Nose: Home Remedies That Work

A stuffy nose usually isn’t caused by too much mucus. The real culprit is swollen tissue inside your nasal passages. When the blood vessels lining your nose become inflamed from a cold, allergies, or irritants, the tissue puffs up and blocks airflow. That means the most effective remedies target the swelling, not just the mucus. Here’s what actually works.

Rinse With Saline

Saline nasal irrigation is one of the most reliable ways to clear a stuffy nose. Flushing saltwater through your nasal passages removes dust, pollen, and debris while loosening thick mucus. You can use a squeeze bottle, a neti pot, or a simple saline spray from the pharmacy. The salt in the solution allows water to pass through delicate nasal membranes without the burning or irritation that plain water causes.

Safety matters here. The FDA warns against using tap water for nasal rinsing because it isn’t adequately filtered. Use distilled water, sterile water, or tap water you’ve boiled for 3 to 5 minutes and cooled to lukewarm. Boiled water can be stored in a clean, closed container and used within 24 hours. For mild stuffiness, a saline spray is the easiest option. For more stubborn congestion, a full rinse with a neti pot or squeeze bottle moves more fluid through the passages and tends to give better relief.

Use Decongestant Sprays Carefully

Over-the-counter nasal decongestant sprays shrink swollen blood vessels fast, and the relief can feel dramatic. But there’s a hard limit: don’t use them for more than three days. After about three days, these sprays can trigger a condition called rebound congestion, where your nose becomes even more blocked than it was before you started. The tissue essentially becomes dependent on the spray to stay open, and stopping it makes the swelling worse. If you need longer relief, switch to saline or an oral decongestant instead.

Adjust Your Sleep Setup

Congestion almost always feels worse at night. When you lie flat, mucus pools in the back of your throat and blood flow to your head increases, which swells nasal tissue further. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated helps gravity pull mucus down and reduces that pooling effect. Stack an extra pillow or two, or slide a wedge under the head of your mattress. Even a modest angle makes a noticeable difference in how easily you breathe overnight.

Control Your Indoor Air

Dry air pulls moisture from your nasal lining, leaving it irritated and more prone to swelling. Indoor humidity below about 30 percent is where most people start noticing dry nasal passages and skin. The sweet spot for winter months is 30 to 40 percent humidity. A cool-mist humidifier in your bedroom can keep your nasal passages from drying out while you sleep. Clean the unit and change the water daily to prevent mold and bacteria from building up inside it.

What About Steam?

Breathing in steam from a hot shower or a bowl of hot water is one of the oldest home remedies for congestion. It feels soothing, and many people swear by it. Research from the University of Southampton, however, found that steam inhalation doesn’t meaningfully relieve chronic sinus congestion symptoms, though it did appear to reduce headaches and cut down on the use of over-the-counter medications. For a short-term stuffy nose from a cold, the warm moisture can temporarily soften mucus and make breathing feel easier. It’s not a cure, but it’s harmless for adults as long as you’re careful with hot water.

Staying Hydrated

Drinking plenty of fluids thins out mucus, making it easier for your body to drain. Water, tea, broth, and warm liquids all help. Warm fluids have the added benefit of soothing irritated throat tissue if mucus has been dripping down the back of your throat. There’s no magic amount to drink. Just stay consistently hydrated throughout the day rather than forcing large quantities at once.

What Works for Babies and Young Children

Congestion in infants and small children requires a different approach. Cough and cold medicines are not safe for infants and can cause serious side effects. The Mayo Clinic advises against using any over-the-counter cough or cold products in children younger than 6.

What does work: saline nasal drops followed by gentle suctioning. Put a few saline drops in each nostril to loosen thick mucus, wait a moment, then use a rubber-bulb syringe to draw it out. Squeeze the bulb first to release the air, insert the tip about a quarter to half inch into the nostril (pointing toward the back and side of the nose), then slowly release the bulb to create suction.

A cool-mist humidifier in the baby’s room helps keep nasal passages moist. Offer plenty of fluids, whether that’s breast milk, formula, or water for older babies, to prevent dehydration. For fever or pain in children, infant acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used, but don’t give acetaminophen to babies under 3 months without talking to a pediatrician first, and ibuprofen is off-limits for children under 6 months.

When Congestion Signals Something More

Most stuffy noses clear up on their own within a week or so. A typical cold improves gradually, even if it lingers. The warning sign is a shift in the opposite direction: if you start feeling worse after 10 to 14 days, that’s often when a viral cold has turned into a bacterial sinus infection. The telltale signs are facial pressure or pain (especially around the cheeks and forehead), discolored nasal drainage that’s yellow or green, fever, or facial swelling. That combination is worth a visit to your doctor, because bacterial infections generally need a different treatment approach than a cold.

Persistent congestion that lasts weeks or months without a clear cold or allergy trigger may point to nonallergic rhinitis, where the nasal tissue stays chronically inflamed. Irritants like strong odors, temperature changes, or dry air can keep it going. If your stuffy nose has become a near-constant companion rather than an occasional annoyance, that pattern is worth investigating with a healthcare provider who can look at what’s driving the inflammation.
