What to Drink for High Blood Pressure and What to Avoid

Several everyday drinks can meaningfully lower blood pressure, with beetroot juice, hibiscus tea, and pomegranate juice backed by the strongest clinical evidence. The effects aren’t subtle: beetroot juice alone has been shown to reduce systolic blood pressure by nearly 8 mmHg in hypertensive patients, which is comparable to some first-line medications. What you drink regularly, and what you stop drinking, can make a real difference in your numbers.

Beetroot Juice

Beetroot juice is one of the most studied beverages for blood pressure, and the results are consistently impressive. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in the American Heart Association’s journal Hypertension, patients with high blood pressure who drank beetroot juice daily saw their systolic pressure drop by 7.7 mmHg on average, with diastolic pressure falling by 5.2 mmHg on 24-hour monitoring. Home readings showed similar results: a systolic drop of 8.1 mmHg.

The mechanism is well understood. Beetroot is rich in natural compounds called dietary nitrates. When you drink the juice, bacteria on your tongue convert those nitrates into a form your body can use to produce nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes and widens blood vessels. This isn’t a subtle biochemical pathway. It’s a direct route from what you swallow to measurable vessel relaxation and lower pressure. Most studies use about 250 ml (roughly one cup) of beetroot juice daily, and the effects build over the first couple of weeks.

Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus tea, made from the deep red calyces of the hibiscus plant, has a long tradition in folk medicine and now has clinical data to support it. In a pilot intervention study, participants drinking hibiscus decoctions saw an average systolic reduction of 23.1 mmHg and a diastolic drop of 12.0 mmHg, compared to just 4.4/3.6 mmHg in the control group. Those are substantial numbers, though the higher doses required in some participants suggest the effect varies from person to person.

The effective dose matters here. At very low amounts (about 2.5 grams of dried hibiscus per day), reductions were modest: around 7 mmHg systolic and 6.7 mmHg diastolic. In the intervention study, participants started at 10 grams daily, and roughly 43% needed to increase their dose to 15 or 20 grams to reach their blood pressure target. For practical purposes, steeping two to three teaspoons of dried hibiscus in hot water for five to ten minutes, consumed once or twice daily, is a reasonable starting point. It can be enjoyed hot or iced.

Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice works through a mechanism similar to a class of blood pressure medications called ACE inhibitors. These drugs lower pressure by blocking an enzyme that tightens blood vessels. In a study of hypertensive patients who drank just 50 ml (under two ounces) of pomegranate juice daily for two weeks, seven out of ten saw a 36% reduction in that enzyme’s activity, along with a 5% drop in systolic blood pressure.

The effect is modest compared to beetroot juice or hibiscus tea, but it’s notable because the dose was so small. The polyphenols in pomegranate, the same compounds that give the fruit its deep color, appear to be responsible. If you’re adding pomegranate juice to your routine, look for 100% juice with no added sugar, since sweetened versions may work against you.

Unsalted Tomato Juice

A yearlong study of Japanese residents with untreated prehypertension or high blood pressure found that drinking about 200 ml (roughly seven ounces) of unsalted tomato juice daily lowered systolic pressure from an average of 141 to 137 mmHg and diastolic from 83 to 81 mmHg. Participants also saw a drop in LDL cholesterol. The key word here is “unsalted.” Regular tomato juice is often loaded with sodium, which directly raises blood pressure and cancels out any benefit. Always check the label.

Low-Fat Milk

The DASH diet, one of the most proven dietary patterns for lowering blood pressure, specifically emphasizes low-fat dairy products. Research from the American Heart Association found that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy lowered blood pressure more effectively than a diet with just fruits and vegetables alone. The dairy component appears to be doing real work.

Calcium in milk helps relax blood vessel walls and improves the balance of sodium and potassium in your body. But calcium isn’t the only factor. Dairy proteins, certain peptides released during digestion, and minerals like potassium and magnesium all contribute. Choosing low-fat or skim milk matters because saturated fat in whole milk can offset some of the cardiovascular benefit.

Green Tea

Green tea’s effect on blood pressure is real but more modest than the other beverages on this list. A large meta-analysis combining results from multiple reviews found that regular green tea consumption lowered systolic pressure by about 1.2 mmHg and diastolic by about 1.2 mmHg. That’s a small shift on its own, but green tea also reduces inflammation in blood vessels, improves cholesterol levels, and may lower the overall risk of cardiovascular disease through several overlapping pathways. Think of it as a supporting player rather than a star.

Two to three cups per day is the range used in most studies. Bottled green tea drinks with added sugar won’t deliver the same benefit.

Water

Plain water doesn’t actively lower blood pressure, but staying dehydrated can raise it. When your body loses fluid, sodium levels in your blood climb. Your system responds by releasing a hormone called vasopressin, which tells your kidneys to hold onto water. Vasopressin also constricts blood vessels, pushing pressure up. Chronic mild dehydration, the kind many people live with without realizing it, can keep this cycle running in the background. There’s no magic amount to drink, but consistent hydration throughout the day helps your cardiovascular system work without that extra strain.

What to Cut Back On

What you stop drinking is just as important as what you start. Sugary beverages are a clear risk factor: drinking as little as one sugar-sweetened drink per day is associated with a 12% higher risk of developing high blood pressure compared to drinking none. That includes sodas, sweetened iced teas, fruit punches, and energy drinks. The threshold is low, and the serving sizes in the research ranged from just 7 to 12 ounces.

Caffeine is more nuanced. If you don’t drink coffee regularly, a single cup can spike your blood pressure by 5 to 10 mmHg. But people who drink caffeine habitually develop a tolerance, and long-term coffee consumption is not linked to a higher risk of hypertension. If you’re already a daily coffee drinker, you likely don’t need to stop. If you’re not, and your blood pressure is borderline, it’s worth knowing that caffeine sensitivity varies widely.

Putting It Together

No single beverage replaces medication if your blood pressure is in stage 2 territory (140/90 mmHg or above). But for people in the elevated range (120-129 systolic) or stage 1 (130-139/80-89), drinks like beetroot juice and hibiscus tea can produce reductions large enough to move you into a healthier category. The most practical approach is to pick one or two of these beverages you actually enjoy, drink them consistently, and simultaneously cut back on sugary drinks. Blood pressure responds to sustained habits, not one-time fixes.
