These injuries often contain synthetic particles, dirt, or debris from the playing surface. Managing a turf burn requires prompt care to prevent infection and promote optimal healing. Immediate Cleaning and Debridement
The first step in managing a turf burn is the thorough cleaning of the wound bed. Since these injuries are often contaminated with foreign materials like plastic fibers or dirt, immediate debridement is required to reduce the risk of infection. Cleaning should be performed under cool or lukewarm running water using a mild, non-perfumed soap.
Gentle scrubbing with a clean, soft washcloth or sterile gauze pad helps dislodge embedded debris that simple rinsing cannot remove. This mechanical action ensures the wound is free of foreign particles and surface contaminants. While painful, inadequate debridement interferes with the natural healing process and encourages bacterial growth.
Flushing the area for several minutes ensures that soap residue is removed, as chemicals can irritate exposed tissue. Only once the abrasion is completely clean and inspected for residual debris should topical agents be applied.
Topical Treatments and Dressing Selection
