What to Take to Reduce Inflammation: Drugs, Herbs, and Diet

The most effective options for reducing inflammation range from over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and naproxen to dietary changes, omega-3 fatty acids, and plant-based supplements like curcumin and ginger. What works best depends on whether you’re dealing with a short-term flare or chronic, low-grade inflammation that’s been building for months or years. Here’s what the evidence says about each option and what you can realistically expect.

NSAIDs: The Fastest Option

Ibuprofen and naproxen are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that work by blocking enzymes called COX-1 and COX-2. These enzymes drive the production of prostaglandins, the chemical messengers that cause swelling, redness, heat, and pain at injury sites. By shutting down that pathway, NSAIDs reduce visible and felt inflammation within hours.

They’re effective for acute situations: a swollen joint, a sports injury, a painful flare of arthritis. But they come with real trade-offs for longer use. NSAIDs can raise blood pressure, cause sodium retention and fluid buildup, and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. That risk exists even in people without heart disease, though it’s higher in those who do have it. Serious side effects can appear as early as the first few weeks of daily use, and the risk climbs the longer you take them. The safest approach is the smallest effective dose for the shortest time possible.

Why Acetaminophen Isn’t an Anti-Inflammatory

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) targets the same COX enzymes as NSAIDs, but with roughly half the potency. A 1,000 mg dose inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 by about 50% for around four hours, compared to the stronger suppression you get from ibuprofen or naproxen. More importantly, acetaminophen’s mechanism breaks down in inflamed tissue. The high levels of oxidizing molecules present at inflammation sites essentially cancel out acetaminophen’s effect on the enzyme. So while it’s useful for pain and fever, it does very little for actual inflammation where you need it most.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The omega-3 fats found in fish oil, specifically EPA and DHA, reduce inflammation through a different route than NSAIDs. Rather than blocking a single enzyme, they shift your body’s balance away from pro-inflammatory signaling molecules and toward compounds that help resolve inflammation. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are the richest food sources, with fish oil supplements as the most common alternative.

Most clinical research uses doses in the range of 1 to 3 grams of combined EPA and DHA per day. Effects on inflammatory markers tend to build gradually over several weeks. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, algae-based omega-3 supplements provide DHA directly, since that’s where the fish get it in the first place.

Curcumin From Turmeric

Curcumin is the active compound in turmeric, and it’s one of the most studied natural anti-inflammatories. It works by interfering with several inflammatory pathways simultaneously, which is part of why it shows up in research on conditions from arthritis to metabolic syndrome.

The main challenge is absorption. Curcumin on its own is poorly absorbed by the gut, and the body clears it quickly. Taking it with piperine, a compound found in black pepper, increases bioavailability by roughly 2,000%. Most supplements now include piperine or use other formulations designed to improve absorption. Research typically uses 500 to 1,500 mg of curcumin extract per day, not to be confused with the amount of turmeric spice (which is only about 3% curcumin by weight).

For chronic inflammatory conditions, expect to take curcumin consistently for four to eight weeks before seeing meaningful changes. Some studies have tracked benefits over periods as long as 16 to 36 weeks. For acute inflammation, like post-exercise muscle soreness, some people notice reduced soreness and lower inflammatory markers within 24 to 72 hours.

Ginger

Ginger contains several active compounds that lower key inflammatory signals in the body, including the same types of molecules (TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-1 beta) that drive chronic inflammation in conditions like arthritis and metabolic disease. It also reduces prostaglandin E2, one of the same targets that NSAIDs hit. Laboratory and animal studies consistently show these effects across multiple forms of ginger, from whole extracts to isolated compounds like gingerol and zingerone.

Human research on ginger for inflammation is still catching up to the animal data, but ginger extract supplements are widely available, typically in doses of 250 to 1,000 mg per day. Fresh ginger in cooking contributes smaller amounts but adds up over time as part of a broader anti-inflammatory diet.

Quercetin

Quercetin is a flavonoid found in onions, apples, berries, and green tea. In clinical trials involving rheumatological conditions, 500 mg per day of quercetin reduced TNF levels (a major inflammatory marker) and decreased disease activity scores in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Dosages in research range widely, from 45 mg to 2,000 mg per day, but the 500 mg dose has the strongest evidence for measurable anti-inflammatory effects.

The Anti-Inflammatory Diet Approach

If your inflammation is chronic rather than acute, dietary patterns may matter more than any single supplement. The Mediterranean diet is the most studied anti-inflammatory eating pattern, built around vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, olive oil, and fish, with limited red meat and processed foods. People who follow it most closely have about 20% lower levels of C-reactive protein (a standard blood marker for inflammation) and 17% lower levels of IL-6 compared to those who follow it least.

Those numbers might sound modest, but they represent a sustained, body-wide reduction in inflammatory signaling, not a temporary suppression that disappears when you stop taking a pill. The diet works through multiple mechanisms at once: the omega-3s in fish, the polyphenols in olive oil and vegetables, the fiber feeding anti-inflammatory gut bacteria, and the absence of processed foods that tend to promote inflammation.

Foods that consistently drive inflammation higher include refined sugars, white flour, processed meats, and seed oils high in omega-6 fats. Reducing these while increasing vegetables, fatty fish, nuts, and berries creates a compounding anti-inflammatory effect over weeks and months.

How Long Each Option Takes to Work

NSAIDs work within hours but aren’t safe for long-term daily use. Supplements and dietary changes operate on a completely different timeline. Curcumin and omega-3s typically need four to eight weeks of consistent daily use before you’d notice a difference in joint stiffness, pain levels, or blood markers. Some studies show continued improvement out to 16 weeks or longer. Ginger and quercetin likely follow a similar trajectory, though the human data is thinner.

Dietary changes are the slowest to produce measurable results but potentially the most durable. The inflammation data from Mediterranean diet studies reflects habitual eating patterns rather than short-term interventions. Think of diet as the foundation and supplements as targeted additions for specific needs.

Combining Approaches Safely

Many people get the best results by layering strategies. A common practical approach looks like this: shift your overall diet toward more vegetables, fish, and olive oil while cutting back on processed foods. Add a curcumin supplement with piperine for targeted support. Use omega-3s daily if you don’t eat fatty fish regularly. Reserve NSAIDs for acute flares when you need fast relief, keeping doses low and duration short.

Be aware that both NSAIDs and high-dose fish oil can thin the blood, so combining them or taking either before surgery requires caution. Curcumin at high doses can also have mild blood-thinning effects. If you’re on blood pressure medication, keep in mind that NSAIDs can interfere with how well those drugs work and may raise your blood pressure independently through their effects on the kidneys.
