What to Take With Magnesium for Better Absorption

The most important nutrient to pair with magnesium is vitamin D, because magnesium is required to convert vitamin D into its active, usable form. But several other nutrients also work in tandem with magnesium, and a few common medications need to be timed carefully around it. Getting these pairings right can make the difference between a supplement that works and one your body barely uses.

Vitamin D: The Most Important Pairing

Magnesium and vitamin D have a direct biochemical relationship. The enzymes your body uses to activate vitamin D, along with the protein that carries vitamin D through your bloodstream, all require magnesium as a cofactor. Without enough magnesium, vitamin D can sit in your blood without being converted into the form your cells actually use. This is why some people take vitamin D supplements for months and see little improvement on blood tests.

If you’re supplementing vitamin D, taking magnesium alongside it helps ensure your body can process and benefit from it. The reverse is also true: vitamin D supports magnesium absorption in the gut, so the two nutrients reinforce each other. You don’t need to take them at the exact same moment, but taking both daily creates the conditions each one needs to work properly.

Vitamin B6 Helps Your Body Hold Onto Magnesium

Vitamin B6 plays a less obvious but meaningful role. When researchers depleted young women of vitamin B6, their magnesium balance turned negative, meaning they were losing more magnesium than they were taking in. The mechanism: B6 deficiency increased the amount of magnesium excreted through urine. Once B6 levels were restored, magnesium retention improved.

You don’t necessarily need a separate B6 supplement. Most people get enough from poultry, fish, potatoes, chickpeas, and bananas. But if your diet is limited or you’re taking magnesium to correct a deficiency, making sure your B6 intake is adequate prevents your kidneys from flushing out the magnesium you’re working to build up. Many magnesium supplements marketed for stress or sleep already include B6 for this reason.

Potassium and Magnesium Work Together

Magnesium is essential for the pump that moves sodium and potassium in and out of your cells. This pump, called the sodium-potassium pump, relies on both ATP (your cells’ energy currency) and magnesium to function. When magnesium is low, the pump doesn’t work efficiently, and your body struggles to maintain normal potassium levels. This is why doctors frequently find that people with low potassium also have low magnesium, and that potassium levels won’t normalize until the magnesium deficit is corrected.

If you eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, you’re likely getting potassium and magnesium from the same foods: leafy greens, avocados, bananas, and beans. For people supplementing both, there’s no absorption conflict. They can be taken together.

What About Calcium?

Calcium and magnesium share some of the same absorption pathways in the gut, which has led to a persistent recommendation to take them at separate times. In practice, moderate doses of each (under 500 mg of calcium) are unlikely to cause a meaningful problem when taken together. The concern is more relevant at higher supplemental doses, where the two minerals may compete for uptake.

If you take a large calcium supplement, spacing it a couple of hours from your magnesium is a reasonable precaution. If you’re getting calcium primarily from food (dairy, fortified plant milks, leafy greens), there’s little reason to worry about timing. Most adults need 310 to 420 mg of magnesium daily depending on age and sex, and keeping that intake consistent matters more than precisely orchestrating when it hits your stomach relative to calcium.

Protein and Fat at the Same Meal

Eating magnesium with a meal that contains some protein and fat is a practical way to support absorption. Research in animal models found that higher protein intake improved apparent magnesium absorption by reducing the amount of magnesium lost through the digestive tract. The protein appeared to keep more magnesium in a soluble, absorbable form as it moved through the intestines. One study in adolescent boys also found that magnesium absorption was lowest when protein intake dropped below 30 grams per day.

The takeaway is simple: take your magnesium supplement with a real meal rather than on an empty stomach. A meal with eggs, chicken, fish, nuts, or legumes provides enough protein and fat to create favorable conditions for absorption. This also tends to reduce the digestive side effects (loose stools, cramping) that some magnesium forms cause on an empty stomach.

Medications to Time Carefully

Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of several common medications if taken at the same time. The most well-documented interactions involve two classes of antibiotics: tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. Magnesium binds to these drugs in the gut and prevents them from being absorbed properly, which can lead to treatment failure. NHS clinical guidelines recommend spacing magnesium as far apart from these antibiotics as possible, and monitoring for signs the antibiotic isn’t working.

Bisphosphonates, the medications commonly prescribed for osteoporosis, face the same problem. Magnesium can bind to them in the digestive tract and reduce their effectiveness. If you take a bisphosphonate, the standard practice is to take it first thing in the morning on a completely empty stomach and wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before consuming anything, including magnesium.

Thyroid medications like levothyroxine are similarly sensitive. Magnesium can reduce how much of the drug your body absorbs. A gap of at least four hours between thyroid medication and magnesium is a common guideline.

A Practical Approach to Pairing

For most people, the simplest strategy is to take magnesium with dinner or your largest meal. This gives you the protein and fat that support absorption, and it places the magnesium at a natural distance from morning medications like thyroid drugs or bisphosphonates. If you also take vitamin D, adding it to the same meal works well since both are better absorbed with food.

If you’re on antibiotics in the tetracycline or fluoroquinolone family, move your magnesium to the meal that falls furthest from your antibiotic dose. Once the antibiotic course is finished, return to whatever timing is most convenient.

The daily targets for magnesium are 400 to 420 mg for adult men and 310 to 320 mg for adult women, with slightly higher needs during pregnancy (350 to 400 mg depending on age). These numbers include what you get from food, so if your diet already includes nuts, seeds, whole grains, and leafy greens, a smaller supplemental dose may be all you need. Pairing it with the right nutrients, and separating it from the right medications, ensures you get the full benefit of what you take.
