For most people, the best thing to use to clean your ears is nothing at all. Your ear canals are self-cleaning: a slow conveyor belt of skin cells moves wax outward from deep in the canal toward the opening, where tiny hairs help push it out naturally. When wax does build up enough to cause problems, a few safe options exist, but most of them work by softening the wax and letting your body finish the job.
Why Your Ears Usually Don’t Need Cleaning
Earwax isn’t dirt. It’s a protective coating that traps dust, bacteria, and debris before they reach your eardrum. The ear canal constantly generates new skin cells that migrate outward, carrying old wax with them. Fine hairs lining the canal assist this movement. For most people, this process is enough to prevent blockages without any intervention.
The urge to clean your ears often comes from visible wax near the opening. That wax is already on its way out. Wiping the outer ear with a damp washcloth during a shower is perfectly fine and is really the only “cleaning” most ears need.
Why Cotton Swabs Are a Bad Idea
Cotton swabs are the most common tool people reach for, and the worst. Rather than pulling wax out, they push it deeper into the canal, packing it against the eardrum. Emergency rooms treat roughly 35 cotton-swab ear injuries per day in the U.S., with most occurring in children under 8. The injuries range from bleeding ear canals to perforated eardrums to cotton tips breaking off and getting stuck inside the canal.
The Mayo Clinic is blunt: don’t put anything in your ear canal to remove wax, especially if you’ve had ear surgery, have a hole in your eardrum, or are experiencing pain or drainage.
Safe Home Options for Softening Wax
If you feel fullness or mild hearing loss that you suspect is wax, softening drops are the safest first step. These don’t scrape or suction the wax. They break it down so your ear’s natural migration can clear it more easily. Several options work:
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%): Available without a prescription at any pharmacy. It fizzes on contact with wax, helping to loosen it. The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital recommends it both for active buildup and as a preventive measure used a few times a week or month to keep ears clear of wax and debris.
- Mineral oil or baby oil: A few drops warmed to body temperature soften hard wax gently.
- Over-the-counter ear drops: Products sold specifically for earwax removal typically contain peroxide or a similar softening agent.
- Saline solution: Plain salt water can help loosen softer wax.
The general approach is the same regardless of which fluid you choose: place about 2 drops (warmed to body temperature) in the affected ear twice a day for up to 5 days. Tilt your head so the drops can sit in the canal for a minute or two, then tilt the other way to let them drain out. If your symptoms haven’t improved after five days, it’s time to see a professional rather than keep going on your own.
What About Ear Candling?
Ear candling involves placing a hollow wax cone in the ear canal and lighting the other end, supposedly creating a vacuum that draws wax out. It doesn’t work. The FDA has determined there is no validated scientific evidence supporting ear candles, and considers them dangerous. A lit flame held near your face and hair carries a high risk of burns and ear damage. The residue people see inside the cone after use is from the candle itself, not from your ear.
When a Professional Should Remove Wax
Some people produce more wax than their canals can clear, especially hearing aid users, people with narrow ear canals, and older adults whose wax tends to become drier and harder. Symptoms of a true blockage include earache, a plugged feeling, ringing (tinnitus), noticeable hearing loss, dizziness, or unusual odor and discharge. These symptoms can also signal other conditions, so having a professional look inside your ear is important before assuming wax is the cause.
Clinicians typically use one of two removal methods. Microsuction uses a small vacuum tip under direct visual guidance to pull wax out without water. It works on both hard and soft wax, carries very low infection risk, and is safe even for people with perforated eardrums or sensitive ear canals. Irrigation flushes warm water into the canal to dislodge softer wax. It’s effective when it’s appropriate, but it isn’t suitable for anyone with a ruptured eardrum, chronic infections, or a history of ear sensitivity, and it carries a slightly higher chance of causing dizziness or infection compared to microsuction.
If your provider recommends irrigation, they may ask you to use softening drops for a few days beforehand to make the procedure quicker and more comfortable.
A Practical Routine for Ear Care
For everyday maintenance, wipe the outer ear with a washcloth after showering. That’s it. If you’re prone to wax buildup, a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide once or twice a week can help keep things moving. Avoid inserting anything into the canal, whether it’s a cotton swab, a bobby pin, a fingertip, or a rolled-up tissue corner. If you notice hearing changes, fullness, or pain, use softening drops for up to five days. If those don’t resolve things, a quick visit for professional removal will.
