What Tools Do Robotic Engineers Use?

Robotics engineers rely on a layered toolkit that spans design software, programming environments, electronic hardware, fabrication equipment, and version control systems. The specific tools vary depending on whether someone is building a warehouse robot, a drone, or a research manipulator, but the core stack is surprisingly consistent across the field.

CAD Software for Mechanical Design

Every physical robot starts as a 3D model. Computer-aided design software lets engineers sketch parts, assemble them virtually, and test whether everything fits before any material gets cut or printed. The two dominant platforms are SolidWorks and Fusion 360. SolidWorks has been a staple in professional engineering for decades and excels at detailed mechanical assemblies with tight tolerances. Fusion 360, made by Autodesk, has gained ground in robotics specifically because it bundles CAD with simulation, rendering, and manufacturing tools in a single cloud-based package. Autodesk’s own robotics curriculum uses Fusion 360 to teach “design for manufacturing” and “design for assembly” workflows, meaning engineers can model a robotic arm and immediately check whether the parts can actually be machined or 3D printed as designed.

For simpler projects or early-stage concepts, some engineers use FreeCAD (an open-source alternative) or Onshape, which runs entirely in a browser. But for production-level robot design where stress analysis and thermal simulation matter, SolidWorks and Fusion 360 remain the industry defaults.

Programming Languages and Libraries

C++ and Python dominate robotics programming, and most engineers use both. C++ handles the performance-critical parts: motor control loops, real-time sensor processing, and anything where microseconds matter. Python covers the higher-level work like prototyping algorithms, running machine learning models, and scripting test routines. Drake, a robotics toolbox developed at MIT and supported by the Toyota Research Institute, offers both C++ and Python interfaces specifically for modeling robot dynamics, planning motions, and verifying control systems.

Beyond general-purpose languages, robotics engineers regularly use OpenCV for computer vision tasks like object detection and image filtering, and PCL (Point Cloud Library) for working with 3D depth sensor data. If a robot needs to recognize objects on a conveyor belt or map a room using a depth camera, these libraries do the heavy lifting.

ROS 2 and Simulation Environments

ROS 2, the Robot Operating System, is the backbone of most modern robotic systems. Despite the name, it’s not a traditional operating system like Windows or Linux. It’s middleware: a communication framework that lets different parts of a robot (cameras, motors, planners, AI models) talk to each other through standardized messages. If your robot has a lidar sensor, a depth camera, and two motor controllers all made by different companies, ROS 2 gives them a common language. It’s real-time friendly and designed for distributed systems, meaning processing can be spread across multiple computers.

Testing robot code on a real machine is slow, expensive, and occasionally destructive. That’s where Gazebo comes in. Gazebo is a physics simulator that lets engineers build virtual worlds, drop a robot model into them, and run the same ROS 2 code they’d run on the real hardware. You can spawn and delete objects, control simulation time, and query the state of anything in the environment. A bridge called ros_gz_bridge passes messages between ROS 2 and Gazebo, so the robot’s software doesn’t know (or care) whether it’s running in simulation or reality. Engineers can also use RViz alongside Gazebo to visualize sensor data and robot models in real time.

Electronic Hardware: Microcontrollers and Single-Board Computers

Robots need physical computing hardware, and most use two tiers working together: a microcontroller for real-time motor and sensor control, and a single-board computer for heavier processing like vision and AI.

On the microcontroller side, Arduino boards (based on ATmega chips) are the most common starting point. They’re inexpensive, easy to program, and backed by a massive community. For industrial applications requiring precise timing and extensive input/output options, the BeagleBone Black is a popular alternative with strong real-time capabilities.

For the processing-heavy layer, the choice depends on what the robot needs to do. A Raspberry Pi is versatile, affordable, and sufficient for running lightweight servers, basic image processing, or coordinating multiple sensors. When a robot needs to run computer vision or deep learning models on board, the NVIDIA Jetson Nano is the go-to option. It includes GPU acceleration purpose-built for AI tasks, making it standard equipment on smart cameras, drones, and autonomous mobile robots. In many advanced projects, you’ll find both: an Arduino handling the split-second motor commands while a Jetson processes camera feeds and makes navigation decisions.

AI and Machine Learning Frameworks

Robots that need to perceive their environment, make decisions, or learn from experience rely on deep learning frameworks. TensorFlow and PyTorch are the two dominant options, and both handle the same core tasks: computer vision, natural language processing, and speech recognition. The practical difference is workflow preference. PyTorch tends to be favored in research settings because its code structure feels more intuitive for experimentation. TensorFlow has a dedicated reinforcement learning library called TF Agents, which is directly relevant to robotics since reinforcement learning is how robots learn tasks like grasping objects or navigating obstacles through trial and error.

These frameworks typically run on the single-board computer or a connected workstation rather than on a microcontroller. Training a model usually happens on a powerful desktop or cloud GPU, and the finished model gets deployed to the robot’s onboard hardware for real-time inference.

3D Printing and Prototyping

3D printing has fundamentally changed how fast robotics engineers can iterate on physical designs. Instead of waiting weeks for machined parts, an engineer can print a new bracket, housing, or gear overnight and test it the next morning.

The material choice matters more than the printer itself. PA12 nylon is the workhorse for structural robotic components because it offers an excellent balance of mechanical strength, stiffness, and light weight. TPU, a flexible filament, is used for grippers, bumpers, and anything that needs to absorb impact. For robots operating in harsh industrial environments with high temperatures, PEEK is the go-to high-performance polymer. When maximum stiffness is needed without adding weight, carbon-fiber filled materials like PA12 GF/CF reinforce printed parts while keeping them light enough for mobile platforms.

On the technology side, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is the standard for producing durable, end-use robotic parts. SLS uses a laser to fuse powdered nylon or metal layer by layer, creating complex geometries without support structures. This is a significant advantage for robotics, where internal channels, interlocking joints, and organic shapes are common. Desktop FDM printers (the most affordable option) work well for early prototypes, but SLS parts can withstand the mechanical stress of actual robot operation.

Version Control With Git

Robot software is rarely written by one person, and it changes constantly. Git, the distributed version control system originally created by Linus Torvalds, tracks every change to every file in a project. Engineers can create separate branches to test new features without breaking the working code, roll back to any previous version if something goes wrong, and merge contributions from multiple team members.

In robotics specifically, Git repositories store not just code but also configuration files, launch scripts, and sometimes even CAD exports. The FIRST Robotics Competition documentation, which trains thousands of students annually, teaches Git as a foundational skill alongside the actual robot programming. A typical robotics Git repository includes the source code, a .gitignore file that excludes generated files and build artifacts, and the full commit history so any team member can trace why a particular change was made. Platforms like GitHub and GitLab add issue tracking and code review on top of Git, making them the default collaboration hubs for robotics teams of all sizes.
