All cats need four core vaccines: one for feline panleukopenia (distemper), one for feline herpesvirus, one for calicivirus, and one for rabies. Kittens also need a feline leukemia virus (FeLV) vaccine. Beyond these, your cat may need additional shots depending on whether it goes outdoors, lives with other cats, or boards at a facility.
Core Vaccines Every Cat Needs
Core vaccines protect against diseases that are widespread, highly contagious, or fatal. Your vet will recommend these regardless of your cat’s lifestyle.
The first three, covering panleukopenia, herpesvirus, and calicivirus, are typically bundled into a single combination shot sometimes called the FVRCP. Panleukopenia is a severe and often deadly virus, especially in kittens, that attacks the gut and immune system. Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus cause upper respiratory infections with symptoms like sneezing, nasal discharge, and mouth ulcers. Even indoor cats can be exposed to these viruses through particles carried in on your shoes, clothing, or hands.
Rabies vaccination is the fourth core vaccine. It protects against a virus that is always fatal once symptoms appear and can spread to humans. Many states legally require it for cats, and penalties for noncompliance range from small fines to confiscation of the animal. Even if your state doesn’t have a statewide mandate, your city or county may have its own ordinance, so it’s worth checking local rules.
Feline Leukemia: Core for Kittens, Optional for Adults
Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a unique case. Vaccination guidelines classify it as core for all cats under one year old and non-core for adults. The reason: kittens are especially vulnerable to FeLV, which suppresses the immune system and can lead to cancer. As cats mature, their natural resistance increases somewhat, and the risk calculation shifts based on lifestyle.
Kittens receive two doses, three to four weeks apart, starting as early as eight weeks. A booster follows about 12 months later. After that first year, annual FeLV boosters are recommended only for cats at high risk of exposure: those that go outdoors, live with FeLV-positive cats, or regularly encounter cats of unknown status. A low-risk indoor adult in a stable one-cat household can generally skip it. Your vet will test your cat’s FeLV status before vaccinating, since there’s no proven benefit to vaccinating a cat that’s already infected.
Non-Core Vaccines Based on Lifestyle
Beyond the core set, two other vaccines exist for cats: one for Chlamydia felis and one for Bordetella bronchiseptica. Both cause respiratory illness, and both are most relevant in specific living situations rather than for the average house cat.
Your vet will consider several risk factors when deciding whether your cat needs these. Cats in multi-cat households, boarding facilities, breeding programs, foster homes, or shelters face a higher risk of respiratory infections simply because more cats mean more opportunities for disease to spread. Introducing a new cat into an existing household also raises the risk for every animal in the home, since the newcomer may carry pathogens without showing symptoms.
Outdoor access is another major factor, and the definition is broader than you might expect. Even supervised outings on a harness or short stays at a boarding facility count as potential exposure. That said, being strictly indoors doesn’t guarantee safety. Subclinically infected housemates (cats carrying a pathogen without visible illness) and pathogens tracked in on your body or belongings can still reach an indoor cat.
The Kitten Vaccination Schedule
Kittens begin their shots at six to eight weeks of age. The FVRCP combination vaccine is given every three to four weeks until the kitten reaches 16 weeks old, which typically means three or four doses in the initial series. This repetition isn’t because earlier doses failed. Maternal antibodies passed through the mother’s milk can interfere with the vaccine, and since there’s no way to know exactly when those antibodies fade, repeated dosing ensures the kitten’s own immune system gets properly activated.
Rabies vaccine is usually given as a single dose at 12 to 16 weeks. FeLV vaccination, as noted above, involves two doses three to four weeks apart during this same kitten window.
Adult Booster Schedule
After the kitten series, cats need a booster for FVRCP at one year of age, then every three years for the rest of their lives. Rabies boosters follow a similar pattern: a one-year booster after the initial dose, then every one or three years depending on the vaccine product your vet uses and what your state law requires.
FeLV boosters, if your cat still qualifies based on risk, are given annually. The non-core respiratory vaccines (Chlamydia, Bordetella) also require annual boosters when indicated.
Titer Testing as an Alternative
If your cat has had a bad reaction to a vaccine, is immunosuppressed, or you simply want to confirm existing immunity before giving another dose, titer testing is an option. A blood sample is drawn and sent to a lab to measure antibody levels against specific diseases. If antibody levels are adequate, revaccination can be postponed.
Titer testing works best for the core viruses like panleukopenia and is most commonly used for cats with a history of adverse vaccine reactions or a known genetic predisposition to poor vaccine response. It’s not a replacement for the full vaccination program in kittens, but it can be a reasonable tool for managing adult boosters in specific situations. Keep in mind that rabies titers, even if positive, won’t satisfy legal vaccination requirements in most jurisdictions.
Side Effects and Risks
Most cats handle vaccination well. When side effects do occur, they’re usually mild. In a study of over 2,500 reported adverse events, the most common reaction was lethargy with or without a low fever, accounting for about 54% of cases. Localized swelling or soreness at the injection site made up another 25%. Vomiting occurred in roughly 10% of cases, and facial swelling in about 6%. These reactions typically resolve within a day or two.
Serious reactions are rare. True anaphylaxis, a severe whole-body allergic response, occurred in less than 1% of reported cases. Death within 48 hours of vaccination was reported at a rate of roughly 8 per million vaccinated cats.
One risk unique to cats is injection-site sarcoma, a type of cancer that can develop at the location where a vaccine was given. This occurs in approximately 1 out of every 10,000 to 30,000 vaccinations. It’s uncommon enough that the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risk for most cats, but it’s the reason vets rotate injection sites and administer certain vaccines in specific locations on the body (like a hind leg rather than between the shoulder blades) to make surgical removal easier if a tumor ever develops. If you notice a lump at a vaccination site that persists or grows more than a month after the shot, have your vet evaluate it.
What Vaccinations Cost
Individual cat vaccines typically run $25 to $60 per shot, depending on the manufacturer and your location. An initial exam visit costs $50 to $100 on average. For a kitten completing its full initial series (three to four FVRCP doses, one or two rabies doses, and two FeLV doses), you’re looking at several visits over the course of a few months. Many clinics offer kitten wellness packages that bundle the exams and vaccines at a reduced rate. Low-cost vaccination clinics, often run by shelters or nonprofit organizations, can bring per-vaccine costs down significantly.
