Hair growth depends on a handful of vitamins and minerals that fuel the follicle cycle, protect against breakage, and keep the scalp healthy. The most important ones are vitamin D, biotin (B7), vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, B12, folate, zinc, and iron. A deficiency in any of these can slow growth or trigger shedding, but the fix isn’t always a supplement. Understanding what each nutrient actually does helps you figure out where your gaps are.

Deficiency leads to a hardening and flattening of the skin lining the follicle, which disrupts normal hair production.
The problem is that too much vitamin A causes hair loss just as reliably as too little. Excess amounts inhibit sebaceous gland function and trigger alopecia. This is a consistent finding in vitamin A toxicity, and it’s one reason to be cautious with high-dose supplements. Most people eating a balanced diet that includes orange vegetables, leafy greens, or dairy get adequate amounts without supplementation.
Vitamin C and Iron Absorption
Vitamin C contributes to hair strength through collagen production. Collagen is a structural protein that supports the hair shaft and the surrounding skin, and your body can’t produce it without adequate vitamin C. Hair that breaks easily or feels limp can sometimes trace back to poor collagen synthesis.
Vitamin C also has a critical indirect role: it dramatically improves absorption of non-heme iron, the type found in plant-based foods like spinach, lentils, and fortified cereals. Vitamin E and Oxidative Damage

B12 and Folate for Scalp Circulation
Vitamin B12 and folate work together to produce healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to every tissue in your body, including the hair follicle’s dermal papilla, the tiny cluster of cells at the base of each follicle that drives growth. When B12 or folate is low, red blood cell production drops, and the follicle receives less oxygen and fewer nutrients. The result is slower growth, thinner strands, and sometimes noticeable shedding.
B12 deficiency is particularly common in vegans, older adults, and people with digestive conditions that impair absorption. Folate is found abundantly in leafy greens, legumes, and fortified grains. Because these two vitamins are synergistic, a deficiency in either one creates a bottleneck for the other.

Hair grows roughly half an inch per month, and the growth cycle means that any nutritional change takes time to show up as visible improvement. Early changes like a shinier, more moisturized appearance can emerge within a few months as scalp oil production normalizes. Measurable increases in density or thickness typically require much longer. Realistic timelines range from several months to a year or more, depending on the severity of the deficiency and how quickly levels are corrected.
Supplements reactivate oil glands on the scalp relatively quickly, which is why hair often looks and feels better before it actually grows faster. True increases in hair count lag behind because new strands need to complete a full growth cycle before they’re long enough to notice.
Food First, Then Supplements
The most reliable way to support hair growth is through a nutrient-dense diet rather than isolated supplements. A single serving of beef liver covers your daily biotin needs and delivers significant B12, iron, zinc, and vitamin A. Eggs, salmon, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens collectively supply nearly every vitamin on this list. The advantage of whole foods is that nutrients arrive in balanced ratios, which reduces the risk of overdoing any single one (a real concern with vitamin A and zinc, both of which cause problems at high doses).
If you suspect a deficiency, blood testing can confirm it before you start supplementing. Iron, vitamin D, zinc, and B12 are all easily measured with standard panels.
