What Vitamins Are Good for Energy and Fatigue?

B12 has no established upper toxicity limit because your body simply excretes what it doesn’t need. If you supplement, you’ll see two common forms: methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin. Vitamin D: The Overlooked Fatigue Factor

Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common, especially in people who live at northern latitudes, spend most of their time indoors, or have darker skin. Fatigue is one of its most frequent symptoms, alongside muscle weakness, muscle aches, and mood changes like depression. The tricky part is that these symptoms creep in gradually, so many people attribute their low energy to stress or poor sleep rather than a nutrient gap.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, which means it dissolves in fat rather than water. If you take it as a supplement on an empty stomach, your body won’t absorb it well. Take it alongside a meal or snack that contains some healthy fat, like avocado, nuts, olive oil, or eggs. This applies to all fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).

CoQ10: For Cellular Energy Production

Coenzyme Q10 isn’t a vitamin in the traditional sense. It accepts electrons generated during the breakdown of fats and sugars, transfers them along the chain, and helps create the proton gradient that powers ATP production.

Your body’s natural CoQ10 production declines with age, and people on statin medications for cholesterol often have reduced levels. Supplementation is most likely to help if your levels are genuinely low. For people with normal CoQ10 levels and a functioning electron transport chain, extra CoQ10 is unlikely to produce a noticeable energy boost. CoQ10 is also fat-soluble, so take it with a meal containing fat for best absorption.

How to Figure Out What You Actually Need

The most effective approach is to get a blood test rather than guessing. A basic panel can check your B12, iron (including ferritin, which reflects your iron stores), vitamin D, and magnesium levels. This tells you exactly where your gaps are, so you’re not spending money on supplements your body doesn’t need and will simply excrete.

If testing isn’t an option, your diet and lifestyle offer clues. Vegans and vegetarians are at higher risk for B12 and iron deficiency. People who avoid dairy and don’t get much sun exposure are more likely to be low in vitamin D. Those who eat few nuts, seeds, or leafy greens may not get enough magnesium. Adults over 50 absorb B12 less efficiently from food and may benefit from supplementation regardless of diet.

When you do supplement, timing and form matter. Fat-soluble nutrients like vitamin D and CoQ10 need dietary fat to absorb properly. B vitamins are water-soluble and absorb fine on an empty stomach, though taking them in the morning makes sense since they support alertness. Iron absorbs best away from coffee and tea, which contain compounds that block its uptake. And with B6 specifically, more is not better: keep your total daily intake from all supplement sources well under 50 milligrams to avoid nerve damage.
