What Worms Do Fleas Cause in Pets and Humans?

Fleas primarily cause tapeworm infections in dogs and cats. The specific parasite is called Dipylidium caninum, the most common tapeworm found in household pets. Your pet doesn’t get tapeworms from a flea bite itself, but from swallowing an infected flea during grooming. Fleas can also transmit a less common parasite, a type of filarial worm, though tapeworms are by far the main concern.

How Fleas Give Pets Tapeworms

The process starts when flea larvae on the ground eat tapeworm eggs from the environment. Those eggs develop into an immature form inside the flea as it matures into an adult. When your dog or cat bites, licks, or chews at itchy skin and accidentally swallows an infected flea, the tapeworm larva is released in the pet’s digestive tract. It then attaches to the intestinal wall and grows into a full adult worm, which can reach several inches in length.

This is why flea infestations and tapeworm infections go hand in hand. A pet that has fleas is almost certainly swallowing some of them, and if any of those fleas carry tapeworm larvae, infection follows. In one controlled study, every single untreated dog exposed to infected fleas developed a tapeworm infection.

What Tapeworm Segments Look Like

Most pets with tapeworms don’t act sick. The infection is often invisible until you notice the telltale sign: small, white, rice-shaped segments near your pet’s rear end, in their stool, or on their bedding. These segments are pieces of the adult worm’s body that break off and pass out, each packed with eggs.

When fresh, the segments can wiggle and move on their own, which is understandably alarming. As they dry out, they shrink and look more like sesame seeds. You might spot them stuck to the fur around your pet’s tail, on furniture, or on the floor. Some pets will scoot their rear on the ground due to irritation, but many show no discomfort at all.

Standard fecal tests at the vet can actually miss tapeworm infections. Because the eggs are released inside those segments rather than freely in the stool, a routine fecal flotation test often comes back negative even when a pet is infected. Visual identification of the segments is the most reliable way to catch it, so your own observations at home matter more than usual with this particular parasite.

A Second, Rarer Flea-Borne Worm

Fleas also serve as the confirmed vector for a filarial parasite called Acanthocheilonema reconditum, a small roundworm that lives under the skin and in body fat of dogs. The immature worms develop to their infective stage inside a flea over about 15 days. Interestingly, researchers believe dogs pick up this parasite the same way they get tapeworms: by swallowing an infected flea rather than through the flea’s bite. This makes it unusual among filarial worms, which are typically injected during blood-feeding by mosquitoes or other insects.

This parasite is far less common and far less dangerous than tapeworms. It rarely causes noticeable illness in dogs. Its main significance is that it can be confused with heartworm on certain blood tests, potentially leading to a misdiagnosis. Your vet can distinguish between the two with more specific testing.

Can Humans Get Worms From Fleas?

Yes, though it’s uncommon. Humans can develop a tapeworm infection by accidentally swallowing an infected flea. Children are the most frequently affected group, likely because of their close physical contact with pets and their tendency to put things in their mouths. The CDC notes that most human infections produce no symptoms at all. When signs do appear, the most noticeable one is finding those same rice-like tapeworm segments in a child’s stool, on diapers, or in the perianal area. Mild digestive upset is possible but not typical.

Treating Tapeworms in Pets

Tapeworm treatment is straightforward. A single dose of a deworming medication effectively kills the adult worms in the intestine. Your pet doesn’t need to fast beforehand, and the treatment works regardless of whether your pet has recently eaten. Puppies can be treated from four weeks of age.

The important thing to understand is that deworming medication has zero residual protection. It kills the worms present at the time of treatment, and that’s it. If your pet swallows another infected flea the next day, the cycle starts all over again. This is why pet owners often feel like tapeworms keep “coming back” despite treatment. They’re not recurring; they’re new infections from ongoing flea exposure. Owners frequently underestimate how often retreatment is needed when fleas remain in the environment.

Why Flea Prevention Matters More Than Deworming

The most effective way to prevent flea-borne worms is to prevent fleas. Newer flea preventatives in the isoxazoline class have proven remarkably effective at breaking the transmission cycle. In a study testing one such product, a single treatment provided 100% protection against tapeworm transmission for up to 12 weeks. Dogs on the preventative had zero tapeworm infections, while every dog in the untreated group became infected. Other products in the same class showed similar results over shorter study periods.

These preventatives work because they kill fleas fast enough that the insects die before pets have a chance to swallow live ones during grooming. Consistent, year-round flea prevention eliminates the tapeworm problem at its source, something that repeated deworming alone simply cannot do. If your pet keeps getting tapeworms, the real issue to solve is the flea problem, not just the worms themselves.

For households with young children, controlling fleas on pets also reduces the (already small) risk of a child accidentally ingesting an infected flea from carpets, furniture, or pet bedding.
