A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). But “normal” and “optimal” aren’t the same thing. Research consistently shows that lower resting heart rates, generally in the 60s or below, are associated with better cardiovascular fitness and lower long-term health risks. Where you land in that range depends on your age, fitness level, medications, and several other factors you can influence.
The Standard Range for Adults
The widely accepted range of 60 to 100 bpm comes from major medical organizations including the American Heart Association and Mayo Clinic. Anything within that window is considered clinically normal, meaning it doesn’t automatically signal a problem. That said, a resting heart rate of 95 carries very different health implications than one of 65, even though both technically fall within range.
A rate above 100 bpm at rest is classified as tachycardia. Below 60 bpm is technically bradycardia, though this is often perfectly healthy. Athletes and highly active people commonly have resting rates in the 40s or 50s because their hearts pump more blood with each beat, so fewer beats are needed per minute. A rate between 40 and 60 bpm is also common during sleep.
Why Lower Is Generally Better
The American Heart Association puts it simply: when it comes to resting heart rate, lower usually means your heart muscle is in better condition and doesn’t have to work as hard. A higher resting heart rate is linked with lower physical fitness, higher blood pressure, and higher body weight.
A large study that followed men for 16 years found striking differences in mortality risk based on resting heart rate. Compared to men with rates below 50 bpm, those with rates between 51 and 80 bpm had a 40 to 50% higher risk of death from any cause. Rates between 81 and 90 bpm doubled the risk. Above 90 bpm, the risk tripled. For every additional 10 bpm, mortality risk increased by about 16%. These numbers don’t mean a heart rate of 75 is dangerous. They do suggest that a lower resting rate, achieved through better fitness, is a meaningful marker of long-term health.
What Affects Your Resting Heart Rate
Your resting heart rate isn’t a fixed number. It shifts throughout the day and responds to a surprising number of influences:
- Fitness level: Regular aerobic exercise is the most reliable way to lower your resting heart rate over time. The heart becomes a stronger pump, moving more blood per beat.
- Body weight: People with obesity tend to have higher resting heart rates than people without.
- Stress and emotions: Anxiety, stress, pain, and even strong positive emotions can temporarily push your heart rate up.
- Caffeine: Coffee, tea, and energy drinks can raise your pulse for an hour or more after consumption.
- Temperature: Hot environments and elevated body temperature increase heart rate.
- Body position: Your rate may tick up slightly when you first stand after sitting or lying down.
- Medications: Blood pressure medications like beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers lower heart rate, sometimes significantly. Stimulant medications, asthma inhalers, and decongestants can raise it.
If you’re taking a medication that affects heart rate, the standard 60 to 100 range may not apply to you in the usual way. Your doctor will have a target range specific to your situation.
How to Measure It Accurately
The best time to check your resting heart rate is in the morning, before getting out of bed, or after sitting calmly for at least five minutes. To get a reliable reading, avoid measuring within one to two hours of exercise or a stressful event, and wait at least an hour after drinking caffeine. Don’t take the reading after standing for a long time, either.
Place your index and middle fingers on the inside of your opposite wrist, just below the base of your thumb. You can also press lightly on the side of your neck, just below the jawbone. Count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by four. For the most accurate result, repeat this a few times and average the values. Most smartwatches and fitness trackers also measure resting heart rate continuously, which gives you the advantage of spotting trends over weeks and months rather than relying on a single snapshot.
When a Low Heart Rate Is a Problem
A heart rate below 60 bpm is normal for fit individuals and during sleep. It becomes a concern only when the heart beats too slowly to deliver enough oxygen to the body. If that happens, you’ll typically notice symptoms: dizziness, unusual fatigue (especially during physical activity), shortness of breath, confusion, memory problems, fainting, or chest pain. A slow heart rate with no symptoms in an otherwise healthy person is rarely something to worry about. A slow heart rate paired with any of those symptoms is worth getting checked promptly.
What a Good Target Looks Like
If you’re a healthy adult with a resting rate in the 70s or 80s, there’s no need for alarm, but there’s room for improvement. Regular cardiovascular exercise (walking briskly, cycling, swimming, jogging) is the most effective way to bring your resting heart rate down over weeks to months. Even modest improvements matter. Dropping from 80 to 70 bpm reflects real gains in heart efficiency.
Tracking your resting heart rate over time is one of the simplest, cheapest ways to monitor your cardiovascular fitness. A gradual downward trend means your heart is getting stronger. A sudden, unexplained rise that persists for days or weeks, particularly if it’s accompanied by fatigue or shortness of breath, is worth discussing with a healthcare provider. The number itself is less important than the pattern: steady, low, and consistent is what a healthy heart looks like at rest.
