When Can Babies Start Eating Baby Food: Key Signs

Babies can start eating solid food at about 6 months old. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend introducing complementary foods around this age, and solids should not be introduced before 4 months. But the calendar alone isn’t the whole picture. Your baby also needs to hit certain physical milestones before they’re truly ready to eat.

Signs Your Baby Is Ready

Every baby develops on a slightly different timeline, so age is just a starting point. What matters more is whether your baby can physically handle food. Look for these signs of readiness:

  • Head and neck control. Your baby can hold their head steady without wobbling.
  • Sitting up. They can sit upright, either independently or with some support.
  • Interest in food. They open their mouth when you offer food, lean toward it, or watch you eat with obvious curiosity.
  • Grasping ability. They reach for and grab small objects like toys or food.
  • Tongue movement. They can move food from the front of their tongue to the back to swallow it, rather than pushing everything out.

That last sign is particularly important. Young babies have something called the extrusion reflex, an automatic response that pushes anything solid out of the mouth with the tongue. This reflex starts fading between 4 and 6 months. If your baby still pushes food right back out every time you offer a spoonful, they likely aren’t ready yet. By 6 months, the reflex has typically disappeared, which is one reason that age works as a general target.

Why 6 Months, Not Earlier

For roughly the first 6 months, breast milk or formula provides all the nutrition a healthy, full-term baby needs, including adequate iron and zinc. After that point, the picture changes. Iron stores that babies are born with start running low, and breast milk alone can no longer supply enough iron or zinc to keep up with rapid growth. Introducing iron-rich foods around 6 months helps bridge that gap and supports brain development during a critical window.

Introducing solids before 4 months is not recommended. A younger baby’s digestive system is still maturing, and their ability to coordinate swallowing with breathing isn’t fully developed. Their nutritional needs are completely met by milk at that stage, so there’s no benefit to rushing, and doing so can displace the calories and nutrients they get from breast milk or formula.

Allergen Introduction Has Changed

If you’ve heard conflicting advice about when to introduce foods like peanuts and eggs, you’re not alone. Guidelines shifted significantly in recent years based on strong clinical evidence. The landmark LEAP trial found that infants who regularly ate peanut starting between 4 and 11 months had an 81% lower risk of developing a peanut allergy by age 5, and that protection lasted into adolescence.

Current guidelines now recommend introducing peanut, egg, and other major allergens at 4 to 6 months, regardless of whether your baby has a family history of allergies. This is a reversal from older advice that suggested delaying these foods. The key is to introduce them in age-appropriate forms. For peanuts, that means thinned peanut butter or peanut puffs, never whole peanuts. For eggs, well-cooked and mashed or scrambled into a soft texture works well.

What to Start With

There’s no required order for introducing foods. The old approach of starting with rice cereal, then vegetables, then fruits has given way to more flexible guidance. You can begin with pureed or mashed vegetables, fruits, meat, or iron-fortified infant cereal. Single-ingredient foods are a practical starting point because they make it easier to spot a reaction if one occurs.

Good early options include mashed sweet potato, pureed peas, mashed banana, pureed meat, or iron-fortified oatmeal cereal mixed with breast milk or formula. Start with a small amount, just a teaspoon or two, and let your baby set the pace. Some babies take to solids immediately. Others need a few tries before they get the hang of it, and that’s completely normal.

Wait a few days between each new food so you can watch for signs of an allergic reaction like a rash, vomiting, or diarrhea. Once a food has been introduced without any issues, you can continue offering it and move on to the next one.

How Much and How Often

At 6 months, solid food is a complement to breast milk or formula, not a replacement. Milk still provides the majority of your baby’s calories and nutrition. Think of early meals as practice sessions. One to two small “meals” a day is plenty at first, with just a few spoonfuls at each sitting.

Over the next few months, you’ll gradually increase both the amount and frequency. By around 8 or 9 months, most babies are eating two to three meals a day alongside their usual milk feeds. Let your baby guide portion sizes. Leaning in and opening their mouth means they want more. Turning their head away, closing their mouth, or pushing food away means they’re done. Respecting those cues helps build healthy eating habits from the start.

Gagging vs. Choking

New parents often panic the first time their baby gags on food, but gagging and choking are very different. Gagging is loud. Your baby’s eyes may water, their face may turn red, and they might make a retching motion or push food forward with their tongue. This is a normal protective reflex that prevents food from going down the wrong way. It happens frequently when babies are learning to eat and is not dangerous.

Choking is quiet. If your baby suddenly goes silent, can’t cough or cry, and their gums, lips, or fingernails start turning blue, that’s a choking emergency. The contrast is the most important thing to remember: gagging is noisy and self-correcting, choking is silent and requires immediate help.

To reduce choking risk, always make sure your baby is sitting upright while eating, never reclined. Cut round foods like grapes and cherry tomatoes into small pieces. Avoid hard, raw chunks of food, whole nuts, popcorn, and anything sticky that could block the airway. Soft, mashable textures are safest in the early months.
