Murphy Jr., a U.S. Air Force aerospace engineer whose frustrated remark during a failed experiment in 1949 became one of the most quoted phrases in the English language. The Rocket Sled Experiments at Edwards Air Force Base
In 1948 and 1949, the Air Force ran a research project codenamed MX981 at what is now Edwards Air Force Base in California. The goal was to find out how much force the human body could withstand during rapid deceleration, the kind of violent stop a pilot might experience in a crash or ejection. The project was led by Colonel John Paul Stapp, a flight surgeon who volunteered his own body for the tests.
The centerpiece of the project was a rocket sled nicknamed “Gee Whiz.” It rocketed down a track at extreme speed and then slammed to a halt, generating enormous g-forces on whoever was strapped in. Stapp rode the sled himself multiple times, enduring forces that temporarily blinded him and left him covered in bruises. The data from these experiments would eventually shape how cockpits, seat belts, and crash safety systems were designed for decades.
The Wiring Mistake That Started It All
Captain Ed Murphy, an R&D officer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, was brought onto the project to help measure the forces acting on the rider’s harness. He designed a set of electronic strain gauges that would attach to the restraining clamps and record the deceleration forces precisely. Each gauge could be wired in one of two ways, only one of which would produce a correct reading.
During a trial run around June 1949, using a chimpanzee as the test subject, Murphy’s assistant wired the sensors and the sled was launched. Every gauge came back with a zero reading, completely useless data. When the team investigated, they discovered that all 16 strain gauges had been installed backwards. Every single one. There is still debate about whether the technician misread the wiring diagram or whether the diagram itself was unclear, but the result was the same: a total failure.
Murphy’s reaction, directed at the technician, was something along the lines of “if there’s any way to do it wrong, he will.” That offhand remark, born out of genuine frustration, got picked up by the rest of the team and refined into a general principle: if anything can go wrong, it will.

The phrase might have stayed an inside joke among engineers if not for Colonel Stapp. Some months after the wiring incident, Stapp gave a press conference about the MX981 project. A reporter asked how it was possible that nobody had been seriously injured during such dangerous experiments. Stapp credited Murphy’s Law. He explained that the team operated under the assumption that anything that could go wrong would eventually go wrong, so they forced themselves to think through every possible failure before each test and design around it.
The press loved it. The phrase spread quickly through aerospace circles, then into popular culture, where it took on a life far beyond what Murphy or Stapp intended. Within a few years, “Murphy’s Law” had become shorthand for the general feeling that the universe is conspiring against you.
A Safety Principle, Not a Joke
The popular version of Murphy’s Law sounds fatalistic, like a shrug at an uncaring universe. But in its original context, it was the opposite. It was a call to action. If you assume that every possible mistake will eventually happen, you design systems that prevent those mistakes from being possible in the first place.
This is exactly what Murphy’s wiring failure illustrated. His strain gauges could be installed two ways, one correct and one wrong. A better design would have made it physically impossible to install them backwards, perhaps by using connectors that only fit in one orientation. That principle, called defensive design, became a cornerstone of reliability engineering. It’s the reason electrical outlets are polarized so you can’t plug something in the wrong way, the reason safety interlocks prevent machinery from operating when a guard is open, and the reason modern connectors like USB-C work regardless of which way you insert them.
Murphy himself spent the rest of his career studying reliability and safety, working to prevent the kind of human error that had ruined his experiment. His contributions influenced the development of safer cockpit controls and laid groundwork for how engineers think about failure prevention in complex systems.
Why Things Really Do Go Wrong
Murphy’s Law resonates because it matches something people observe constantly: left alone, things tend to fall apart. There’s actually a physics concept behind this intuition. The second law of thermodynamics says that entropy, a measure of disorder, always increases in any closed system. In practical terms, this means that without constant effort, things naturally drift toward a messier, less functional state. Desks get cluttered, engines break down, buildings crumble, and gas mixes irreversibly with air.
To keep any system running, you have to continuously inject energy into it. Maintenance, attention, cleanup, repair. When engineers adopted a “paranoid” view that forces are always working to disrupt their systems, they became more vigilant and took more proactive steps to prevent failure. Murphy’s Law, in this light, isn’t pessimism. It’s a practical acknowledgment that the default direction of any complex system is toward disorder, and that good design means fighting that tendency at every step.

British culture has “Sod’s Law,” which carries the same meaning with a slightly more bitter edge: that bad outcomes don’t just happen randomly but seem to target you at the worst possible moment. There’s also “Finagle’s Law,” which specifically states that anything that can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible time.
What made Murphy’s version stick was the specific, verifiable story behind it and the fact that Stapp promoted it publicly in a way that connected it to real engineering practice.
