Where Does Toothpaste Come From? Origins and Ingredients

Toothpaste has been around for at least 1,600 years, originating as homemade powders and pastes in ancient Egypt before evolving into the manufactured tubes you buy today. The modern version is a carefully engineered mix of mineral abrasives, fluoride, detergents, and flavoring, produced in factories under vacuum to remove air bubbles and squeezed into tubes at high speed. Its journey from ancient remedy to drugstore staple is a surprisingly interesting one.

Ancient Roots: Salt, Pepper, and Dried Flowers

The earliest known toothpaste recipe dates to fourth-century Egypt and called for salt, pepper, mint, and dried iris flower. These ingredients were ground into a powder and rubbed onto the teeth, sometimes with a finger or a frayed stick. The salt and pepper acted as crude abrasives to scrub away food debris, while the mint provided a fresh taste. Greeks and Romans used similar mixtures, often adding crushed bones, oyster shells, or charcoal for extra scrubbing power.

These formulas weren’t gentle. They could wear down enamel and irritate gums. But the core idea, using a mildly gritty substance to clean tooth surfaces, is the same principle behind every toothpaste sold today.

How Toothpaste Became a Commercial Product

For most of human history, tooth-cleaning mixtures were made at home or by local apothecaries. That changed in 1873, when Colgate launched the first commercially produced, pleasantly scented toothpaste, sold in a jar. Nearly two decades later, in 1892, Dr. Washington Sheffield introduced the collapsible tube, borrowing a concept first used for artist’s paints in 1841. The tube made toothpaste portable, hygienic, and easy to dispense, and the format stuck.

The biggest leap came in 1956, when Crest released the first fluoride toothpaste nationally in the United States. Fluoride strengthens enamel by incorporating itself into the tooth’s outer layer during development and remineralization, making teeth significantly more resistant to cavities. Within a few years, fluoride toothpaste became the standard, and cavity rates dropped dramatically across populations that adopted it.

What’s Actually Inside the Tube

Modern toothpaste is roughly 20 to 40 percent abrasive by weight, mixed with water, humectants, detergent, fluoride, flavoring, and a handful of other functional ingredients. Each one has a specific job.

  • Abrasives do the physical cleaning. The most common are calcium carbonate (a fine white mineral powder) and hydrated silica (a form of silicon dioxide). These are chosen because they’re hard enough to scrub plaque off enamel but soft enough not to scratch it. Manufacturers select small, smooth particles and keep the pH close to neutral.
  • Fluoride is the active ingredient that prevents cavities. Most toothpastes use sodium fluoride or stannous fluoride at concentrations between 850 and 1,150 parts per million of total fluorine. The FDA caps each tube at 276 milligrams of total fluorine to limit toxicity risk, especially for children.
  • Humectants like glycerin and sorbitol keep the paste moist so it doesn’t dry out in the tube.
  • Detergent (usually sodium lauryl sulfate) creates the foaming action that helps spread the paste around your mouth and lift debris off teeth.
  • Flavoring and sweetener make the experience tolerable. Mint oils are the most popular, paired with a non-sugar sweetener like saccharin.
  • Thickeners give toothpaste its gel or paste consistency so it sits on your brush instead of running off.

Calcium and phosphate are sometimes added as well. These minerals increase the concentration of tooth-building ions in your mouth, which improves remineralization and helps fluoride work more effectively.

How Toothpaste Is Manufactured

The production process starts with the liquid base. Water, sorbitol, glycerin, and other liquid ingredients are combined in a large mixing vessel. Thickeners are often pre-blended with glycerin or flavoring oil to help them dissolve evenly rather than clumping. Next, the active fluoride ingredient, sweetener, and preservative go in.

The abrasive powder is added after the liquid base is ready, followed by flavoring and coloring. The detergent always goes in last, mixed at slow speed, because adding it earlier or mixing it vigorously would create excessive foam and trap air throughout the batch.

Aeration is one of the biggest challenges in toothpaste manufacturing. Every powdered ingredient carries some trapped air, and the detergent makes the problem worse. To deal with this, mixing typically happens under vacuum, which pulls dissolved air out of the paste. Without this step, the finished product would be full of tiny bubbles, making it spongy and inconsistent. Once mixing is complete, the paste is pumped into tubes, sealed, and packaged for distribution.

Natural Toothpaste: A Different Approach

Over the past couple of decades, natural toothpaste has carved out a growing share of the market. These formulas typically skip synthetic preservatives, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, and detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate. Instead, they rely on plant-based ingredients: coconut oil, clove oil, aloe vera, calendula, and various herbal extracts that have been used in traditional medicine for centuries.

Research shows these plant extracts do have real antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Clove oil, oregano essential oil, and tea tree oil have demonstrated activity against the specific bacteria that cause cavities. One notable difference in lab studies: toothpastes containing sodium lauryl sulfate have shown some cellular toxicity, while herbal formulas have not. On the other hand, most natural toothpastes don’t contain fluoride, which means they lack the single most proven cavity-fighting ingredient available.

The choice between conventional and natural toothpaste comes down to priorities. If cavity prevention is your main concern, fluoride is hard to replace. If you’re sensitive to detergents or prefer plant-based products, natural options provide genuine cleaning and antibacterial benefits, just through a different mechanism.

How Toothpaste Is Regulated

In the United States, any toothpaste that claims to fight cavities is regulated as an over-the-counter drug by the FDA. It must meet the conditions laid out in a specific monograph that dictates which fluoride compounds are allowed, in what concentrations, and in what forms. Sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, and stannous fluoride are the three approved active ingredients, each with its own required concentration range depending on whether the product is a gel, paste, or powder.

Package size is also controlled. Because fluoride is toxic in large doses, no single tube of toothpaste can contain more than 276 milligrams of total fluorine. This is why children’s toothpaste tubes tend to be smaller and why pediatric formulas use lower fluoride concentrations. Toothpastes that don’t make drug claims (like many natural brands) are regulated as cosmetics instead, which involves a different and generally less stringent set of requirements.
