Careers in this cluster range from registered nurses and physical therapists to medical records specialists and biotechnology researchers.
The cluster has been evolving. Advance CTE, the national organization that manages career cluster frameworks, now calls it the “Healthcare & Human Services” cluster and organizes it into six sub-clusters: Behavioral & Mental Health, Biotechnology Research & Development, Community & Social Services, Health Data & Administration, Personal Care Services, and Physical Health. Many textbooks and exams still use the older five-pathway structure, so it helps to know both versions.
The Five Traditional Pathways
Most CTE courses and standardized tests describe the health science cluster through five career pathways. Each pathway groups jobs by the type of work involved.
- Therapeutic Services: The most popular pathway. It centers on working directly with patients to provide care, treatment, or counseling that improves their condition over time. Jobs include nurses, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, surgical technicians, athletic trainers, and home health aides.
- Diagnostic Services: Focused on running tests and evaluations that help identify diseases and conditions. Professionals here include medical technologists, radiologists, CT and MRI technologists, diagnostic medical sonographers, and dental hygienists.
- Health Informatics: The data and administrative side of healthcare. Workers in this pathway manage patient records, oversee health information systems, ensure regulatory compliance, and use data to improve organizational efficiency. Roles include health information systems managers, informatics nurse specialists, and health informatics consultants.
- Support Services: Behind-the-scenes roles that keep healthcare facilities running. This includes biomedical equipment technicians, hospital maintenance engineers, and environmental services workers who maintain sterile and safe environments.
- Biotechnology Research and Development: Careers focused on discovering new treatments, analyzing genetic data, and conducting clinical trials. Drug development scientists, genomic data analysts, and R&D project managers all fall here.
Where Health Science Professionals Work
One reason the cluster is so large is the variety of work settings. You could work in a hospital, private office, outpatient clinic, or nursing home. Less obvious settings include cruise ships, sports arenas, patients’ homes, government agencies, and corporate wellness programs. Laboratory researchers may spend their days in a biotech facility, while health informatics professionals often work in office environments or remotely. The setting depends almost entirely on which pathway and specific role you choose.
Education Ranges From Certificates to Doctorates
No single education level defines this cluster. Certification programs offer the fastest route into roles like medical billing or clinical assisting. Associate degrees open doors to nursing, radiologic technology, and medical lab sciences. A bachelor’s in health sciences provides a broad foundation in clinical principles, health systems, research, and policy, which is useful if you’re still deciding on a specialty.
Master’s degrees lead to specialized expertise and leadership positions, while some careers require doctoral training. Physical therapy is a clear example: the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) is now the standard degree required to become a licensed physical therapist in the United States.
