The global data broker market was valued at roughly $278 billion in 2024 and is projected to nearly double to $512 billion by 2033. These companies collect, package, and sell information about your purchasing habits, location history, health concerns, financial status, and online behavior to advertisers, employers, insurers, political campaigns, and other buyers.

Most of this collection happens invisibly. Every app permission you grant, every loyalty card you swipe, and every website cookie you accept feeds data into a profile that follows you across the internet. Even the design of the websites and apps you use daily is engineered to steer your choices. Regulatory agencies call these manipulative design features “dark patterns,” and in 2023, both the FTC and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ramped up enforcement against them.

Common examples include free trial offers that automatically convert into paid subscriptions, with the cancellation process deliberately made difficult.
