Your allergies get worse at night because of a combination of factors that all converge at bedtime: your body’s natural anti-inflammatory defenses drop, lying down changes how blood and mucus behave in your nasal passages, and your bedroom likely contains a concentrated dose of the very allergens triggering your symptoms. No single cause explains it. Understanding each one can help you figure out which factors matter most for you and what to do about them.
Your Body’s Built-In Anti-Inflammatory Fades
Cortisol, your body’s main anti-inflammatory hormone, follows a predictable daily cycle. Levels peak in the early morning, helping you wake up and keeping inflammation in check throughout the day. By evening, cortisol drops to its lowest point. With less of this natural dampener circulating, your immune system responds more aggressively to allergens, and your airways swell more easily.
This isn’t just theoretical. Nasal congestion follows a well-documented circadian rhythm, consistently peaking at night and in the early morning hours. Research published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology found that people with allergic rhinitis have an even more disrupted cortisol pattern than non-allergic people. Their cortisol rhythm is flatter overall, with significantly lower average levels and a delayed peak. In other words, if you have allergies, your body may already be working with a weaker version of this built-in defense system, and nighttime makes the gap worse.
Lying Down Changes Everything in Your Nose
When you’re upright during the day, gravity helps drain mucus from your sinuses and keeps blood flowing evenly. The moment you lie down, two things happen. First, blood flow to your head increases, which causes the soft tissues inside your nose (the turbinates) to swell. This is the same mechanism that gives you that “instantly stuffed up” feeling when you recline on the couch. Second, mucus that drained freely while you were standing now pools in the back of your throat instead of moving downward.
That pooling triggers post-nasal drip, which is one of the main reasons allergy-related coughs get worse at night. The mucus sits against the back of your throat and activates the cough reflex repeatedly, especially during the first hour or two after you lie down. Elevating your head six to eight inches above your body (using a wedge pillow or stacking pillows) can reduce both the swelling and the drip by partially restoring gravity’s drainage effect.
Your Bed Is an Allergen Hotspot
Your mattress and pillows collect dust mite allergens at levels that would surprise most people. A national survey of U.S. homes found detectable dust mite allergen in 84% of beds tested. Nearly half of those beds (46%) had concentrations above the threshold associated with developing allergic sensitization, and about one in four exceeded the level linked to asthma risk. You spend seven to nine hours with your face pressed into this surface every night, breathing in allergens at close range for an extended period. No other exposure during the day comes close to this duration or proximity.
Dust mites thrive in warm, humid environments. They feed on the skin cells you shed, and your bed provides the perfect combination of warmth, moisture from your body, and a steady food supply. If your bedroom humidity sits above 60%, you’re creating ideal conditions for both dust mites and mold growth. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50% to limit both.
Pet dander is another common offender. If your dog or cat spends time on your bed during the day, or even just in the bedroom, dander settles into your bedding and becomes airborne each time you shift position at night. Pollen works similarly: it clings to your hair, skin, and clothes throughout the day and transfers to your pillow and sheets when you climb into bed.
Your Morning Antihistamine May Be Wearing Off
If you take a daily antihistamine in the morning, its effectiveness may be fading by the time you need it most. Common once-daily antihistamines have half-lives ranging from 8 to 24 hours, which means the drug is technically still in your system at bedtime but at reduced levels. For some people, particularly those on the shorter end of that range, protection is noticeably weaker by late evening.
Switching your antihistamine dose to the evening instead of the morning can make a real difference. Peak blood levels will then coincide with the overnight hours when your symptoms are worst. This is a simple timing change, not a dosage change, and it’s one of the most effective adjustments you can make without adding any new medications.
How to Reduce Nighttime Allergen Exposure
The most impactful change is addressing your bedding directly. Allergen-proof encasings for your mattress and pillows create a physical barrier between you and the dust mite allergens trapped inside. Washing sheets and pillowcases weekly in hot water (at least 130°F) kills dust mites and removes accumulated allergens. These two steps together target the single largest source of overnight exposure.
A HEPA air purifier in the bedroom can capture 99.7% of airborne particles, including dust mite debris, pet dander, mold spores, and pollen. The key is matching the unit’s Clean Air Delivery Rate to your room size. A filter rated for a small office won’t meaningfully clean the air in a large bedroom, and no portable unit will handle your entire home. Place it in the bedroom, run it with the door closed, and let it cycle the air in that one room.
Showering before bed removes pollen and other outdoor allergens from your hair and skin so they don’t transfer to your pillow. If you have pets, keeping them out of the bedroom (or at minimum, off the bed) reduces dander accumulation on the surfaces closest to your face. A dehumidifier can bring bedroom humidity into the 30% to 50% range where dust mites and mold struggle to thrive.
Nasal saline rinses before bed physically flush allergens and mucus from your nasal passages, giving you a cleaner starting point for the night. Pairing a rinse with a nasal corticosteroid spray, used consistently, addresses the underlying inflammation that makes your nasal tissues so reactive in the first place. These work best as a nightly routine rather than an occasional fix.
