Persistent bloating and gas usually come down to one of three things: the foods you eat, the bacteria living in your gut, or the air you swallow without realizing it. Sometimes it’s all three at once. The good news is that most chronic bloating has an identifiable, fixable cause. The trickier part is figuring out which one applies to you.

How Gas Forms in Your Gut

Your body produces intestinal gas through two main routes. The first is swallowed air, which introduces nitrogen and oxygen into your digestive tract. The second, and usually bigger, contributor is bacterial fermentation in your colon.

Here’s what happens: certain carbohydrates don’t get fully digested and absorbed in your small intestine. They pass into the colon, where billions of bacteria break them down. The byproducts of that breakdown are carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane. No human cell can produce hydrogen or methane on its own. It all comes from bacteria fermenting whatever you sent their way.

The type of gas matters too. Some people’s gut bacteria produce more methane than hydrogen, thanks to organisms called methanogens (specifically one called Methanobrevibacter smithii). Methane-dominant gas is clinically linked to constipation and slower gut motility, which means the gas sits around longer, stretching your intestines and making that uncomfortable fullness worse. If your bloating comes paired with constipation rather than diarrhea, methane-producing organisms may be playing a central role.

Foods That Cause the Most Gas

The biggest dietary culprits are short-chain carbohydrates collectively known as FODMAPs: fermentable sugars that your small intestine absorbs poorly. These include fructose (found in many fruits, honey, and high-fructose corn syrup), lactose (dairy), sugar alcohols like sorbitol and mannitol (sugar-free gums and candies), and certain fibers found in wheat, onions, garlic, beans, and lentils.

Beans deserve special mention. They contain a sugar called stachyose that produces striking amounts of both carbon dioxide and hydrogen when gut bacteria ferment it. Lab studies show stachyose generates as much gas as glucose or galactose when incubated with intestinal bacteria. That’s why beans have their reputation.

Fiber itself can be a double-edged sword. The recommended daily intake for adults is 25 to 35 grams, but most people either eat too little or suddenly increase their intake and wonder why they feel like a balloon. If you’re adding fiber to your diet, the guideline is to increase by about 5 grams every two weeks. Jumping from 10 grams to 30 grams overnight is a reliable recipe for bloating.

Enzyme Deficiencies and Food Intolerances

If specific foods consistently cause problems, your body may lack the enzymes needed to break them down. Lactose intolerance is the most common example. Without enough lactase, the enzyme that digests milk sugar, lactose passes undigested into the colon where bacteria ferment it into gas. Symptoms typically hit within 30 minutes to two hours after eating dairy.

Fructose malabsorption works similarly. People with this condition can’t properly absorb fructose in the small intestine, so it moves into the large intestine and triggers gas and pain. This is different from hereditary fructose intolerance, a rare genetic condition present at birth that causes fructose to accumulate in the liver and kidneys. Fructose malabsorption is far more common and less dangerous, but it can make you miserable if you’re eating lots of fruit, juice, or processed foods sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup.

A hydrogen breath test can identify these intolerances. You drink a solution containing a specific sugar (lactose, fructose, or glucose), then breathe into a collection device every 15 to 30 minutes for a few hours. A rise of more than 20 parts per million of hydrogen above your baseline reading counts as a positive result. Most clinics now measure both hydrogen and methane simultaneously, since roughly 15% to 30% of people produce more methane than hydrogen, which can skew results if only one gas is measured.

Air You Swallow Without Noticing

A surprising amount of bloating comes not from your gut bacteria but from swallowed air, a condition called aerophagia. The habits that cause it are so ordinary you probably don’t think twice about them: eating too fast, talking while eating, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, drinking through straws, smoking, and drinking carbonated beverages. Each of these introduces extra air into your stomach, which either gets burped back up or moves into your intestines and creates that gassy, distended feeling.

If your bloating is worse in the upper abdomen and comes with frequent belching, swallowed air is a likely contributor. Slowing down at meals, chewing thoroughly before taking the next bite, and switching from carbonated drinks to still water can make a noticeable difference within days.

IBS, SIBO, and Gut Bacteria Imbalances

When bloating is chronic and doesn’t respond to simple dietary changes, two conditions come up repeatedly: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). They overlap so much that distinguishing them can be genuinely challenging, even for gastroenterologists.

The key clinical difference is emphasis. IBS tends to be more pain-predominant, while SIBO tends to be more bloating-predominant. SIBO occurs when bacteria that normally live in the colon migrate into the small intestine, where they ferment food earlier in the digestive process and produce gas in a part of the gut that isn’t designed to handle it. Much about SIBO remains poorly understood, including how many people have it, what triggers it, and how to treat it without recurrence.

Methane overproduction is its own category. Because methanogens are technically not bacteria but a separate type of organism called archaea, they don’t always respond to standard antibiotics. Methane-dominant patterns are strongly associated with chronic constipation and constipation-predominant IBS. If you’re bloated, gassy, and constipated most of the time, this pattern is worth investigating with your doctor through breath testing.

Over-the-Counter Options That Help

Two common OTC products target gas through different mechanisms. Simethicone (the active ingredient in Gas-X) works physically: it breaks up gas bubbles in your digestive tract so they’re easier to pass. It doesn’t reduce gas production, but it can reduce the uncomfortable pressure of large trapped gas pockets.

Alpha-galactosidase (sold as Beano) takes a different approach. It’s an enzyme that breaks down complex carbohydrates like those found in beans, lentils, and cruciferous vegetables before they reach the colon. By converting these carbohydrates into simple sugars that your small intestine can absorb, it prevents them from becoming fuel for gas-producing bacteria. Over 20% of the general population experiences abdominal discomfort from intestinal gas, and alpha-galactosidase supplements have been studied in randomized, placebo-controlled trials showing benefit for gas-related symptoms in both adults and children. The key is taking it with your first bite of the problem food, not after symptoms start.

Patterns Worth Paying Attention To

Most bloating is uncomfortable but harmless. However, certain patterns signal something that needs medical evaluation. Watch for bloating that gets progressively worse over weeks, persists for more than a week without relief, or comes with persistent pain. Alarm symptoms include fever, vomiting, blood in your stool, unintentional weight loss, and signs of anemia like unusual fatigue or pale skin.

For everyone else, the most useful thing you can do is start tracking. Keep a simple food and symptom diary for two to three weeks. Note what you ate, when bloating started, and what it felt like. Patterns emerge faster than you’d expect. You may discover that your daily apple and afternoon latte are doing more damage than last night’s dinner, or that your bloating correlates perfectly with stress-related gum chewing at work. The cause is almost always findable. It just takes paying attention to the right details.
