Why Am I More Tired When I Sleep More?

Sleeping more than your body needs doesn’t give you extra rest. It actually disrupts the biological systems that help you feel alert, leaving you groggier, foggier, and more fatigued than if you’d slept a normal amount. Most healthy adults function best on 7.5 to 8.5 hours of sleep per 24-hour period, and consistently exceeding that range can backfire in several specific ways.

Your Internal Clock Gets Thrown Off

Your body runs on a roughly 24-hour internal clock that controls when you feel awake and when you feel sleepy. This clock also governs cortisol, the hormone that rises sharply near your usual wake time to help you feel alert. Cortisol peaks in the morning, declines through the day, hits its lowest point in the early evening, and gradually climbs again overnight to prepare you for waking up.

When you sleep well past your normal wake time, you miss that cortisol peak. Your brain was ready to wake you up hours ago, and now the hormonal wave that was supposed to energize you has already passed. This is called circadian misalignment: your sleep schedule and your internal clock are out of sync. Research shows that chronic circadian misalignment actually reduces overall cortisol levels, which helps explain why oversleeping on weekends or days off can leave you feeling flat and sluggish rather than recharged.

The effect compounds over time. If you regularly shift your sleep window by sleeping in two or three extra hours, your clock never fully adjusts. You end up in a kind of perpetual jet lag, where your body isn’t sure when it’s supposed to be alert.

You’re Waking Up in the Wrong Sleep Stage

Sleep moves through repeating cycles of lighter and deeper stages, each lasting about 90 minutes. The deepest stage, called slow-wave sleep, is when your core body temperature drops to its lowest point and your brain produces slow delta waves. Waking up during this stage causes sleep inertia, that heavy, disoriented feeling where you can barely think straight or keep your eyes open.

Here’s the problem with sleeping longer than you need to: after about 7 to 8 hours, your body has completed most of its restorative deep sleep cycles. But if you keep sleeping, you cycle back into deep sleep again. If your alarm goes off (or you finally drag yourself awake) during one of those extra deep-sleep phases, you’ll feel significantly worse than if you’d woken up naturally at the end of an earlier cycle. The grogginess from sleep inertia can last 15 to 30 minutes or, in some cases, linger for hours.

This is why a 9- or 10-hour night often feels worse than a 7.5-hour one. It’s not the total hours that determine how refreshed you feel. It’s which stage you wake from.

Cognitive Performance Declines With Excess Sleep

The mental fog you feel after oversleeping isn’t just in your head. Sleeping nine or more hours per night is associated with measurably worse cognitive performance, including lower scores on tests of memory, visual-spatial skills, and executive function (the mental abilities you use to plan, focus, and juggle tasks). An analysis published in 2025 in Alzheimer’s & Dementia found this effect was especially pronounced in people with depressive symptoms.

So the tiredness you’re feeling may not just be physical. Your brain genuinely processes information less efficiently when you consistently oversleep. The sweet spot for mental sharpness aligns closely with the 7-to-9 hour range that sleep researchers recommend for adults.

Oversleeping Triggers Low-Grade Inflammation

Spending more than 10 hours in bed at night is linked to a 12% increase in C-reactive protein, a marker your body produces in response to inflammation. For context, people who spent 6 to 8 hours in bed had average CRP levels around 2.25 mg/L, while those spending over 10 hours averaged 2.84 mg/L. That may sound like a small difference, but chronic low-grade inflammation contributes to the kind of generalized fatigue, body aches, and heaviness that make you feel like you haven’t rested at all.

The relationship between sleep and inflammation follows a U-shaped curve: too little sleep and too much sleep both push inflammatory markers higher. The lowest inflammation levels sit right in the middle of the recommended range.

Sometimes the Problem Isn’t Oversleeping

If you’re regularly sleeping 9 or 10 hours and still feeling exhausted, the real issue may be that your sleep quality is poor, and your body is compensating by keeping you in bed longer. Several medical conditions cause this pattern.

Sleep apnea is one of the most common culprits. Your airway partially collapses during sleep, causing brief awakenings you probably don’t remember. You might spend 9 hours “sleeping” but only get 5 or 6 hours of actual restorative rest. Your body responds by making you feel like you need even more sleep, creating a cycle where longer nights never fix the underlying problem.

Hypersomnia is a condition where you feel excessively sleepy despite getting adequate sleep. Secondary hypersomnia, the more common form, is triggered by other health issues: depression, thyroid disorders, neurological conditions, or medications that interfere with sleep quality. In these cases, the fatigue isn’t caused by sleeping too much. The excessive sleep is a symptom of whatever is disrupting your rest.

If you consistently need more than 9 hours to feel functional, or if no amount of sleep leaves you feeling rested, the cause is worth investigating. A sleep study can identify problems like apnea that are invisible to you while you’re asleep.

How to Break the Cycle

The most effective fix is also the simplest: wake up at the same time every day, including weekends. This keeps your cortisol rhythm aligned with your schedule and prevents you from drifting into extra deep-sleep cycles you don’t need. Set your target wake time based on 7.5 to 8.5 hours after you fall asleep, and resist the urge to “catch up” by sleeping in.

If you feel groggy when you wake, give yourself 15 to 20 minutes before judging how rested you are. Sleep inertia fades quickly with light exposure, movement, and hydration. Bright light in particular sends a strong signal to your internal clock that it’s time to be awake.

Pay attention to how you feel in the early afternoon, not the first five minutes after your alarm. That midday energy level is a better indicator of whether you’re getting the right amount of sleep. If you’re alert and functional through the afternoon without caffeine, your sleep duration is probably right, even if mornings feel rough at first.
