Burnout Feels Like Laziness but Isn’t
The World Health Organization classifies burnout as an occupational syndrome with three specific dimensions: energy depletion or exhaustion, growing cynicism or mental distance from your work, and reduced professional efficacy. If you used to be productive and gradually lost the ability to care or follow through, burnout is a likely culprit. It results from chronic workplace stress that hasn’t been managed, not from a lack of motivation or talent.
Burnout doesn’t resolve with a long weekend. It typically requires structural changes: reducing workload, setting firmer boundaries, or in some cases changing roles entirely. The cynicism dimension is a useful marker. Many adults don’t realize they have it because they developed coping strategies in school that eventually stop working under adult demands.
There’s no single test for ADHD or most of these conditions. Diagnosis involves ruling out other explanations, which is why it’s worth getting a proper evaluation rather than self-diagnosing. The overlap between ADHD, anxiety, and depression is significant, and the right treatment depends on identifying the actual root cause.
Small Structural Changes That Help
One of the most effective, evidence-backed changes is simple: take scheduled breaks instead of waiting until you feel like you need one. A study comparing students who took predetermined breaks (roughly 25 minutes of work followed by a short break, similar to the Pomodoro technique) versus students who decided for themselves when to rest found that the self-regulated group ended up taking longer, less efficient breaks.
