Case studies give researchers something most other methods can’t: deep, detailed insight into real-world phenomena as they actually unfold. While experiments and surveys are designed to measure specific variables across large groups, case studies zoom in on a single subject, event, or organization to capture the full complexity of what’s happening and why. This makes them uniquely powerful for discovery, for understanding rare events, and for generating ideas that larger studies can later test.
They Generate Hypotheses Others Can Test
One of the most important functions of a case study is exploration. When researchers encounter a new program, an unfamiliar condition, or a phenomenon that hasn’t been studied yet, a case study provides an empirically grounded introduction to its structure, dynamics, and context. The goal at this stage isn’t to prove anything. It’s to figure out what questions are worth asking.
Exploratory case studies are particularly useful for developing hypotheses, shaping future research questions, and identifying which variables matter before investing in a large-scale study. In program evaluation, for example, a case study can map out how a program is supposed to work, what outcomes it expects, and whether it’s even ready to be formally evaluated. This kind of groundwork saves time and money by focusing later research on the right targets. A well-conducted exploratory case study doesn’t wander aimlessly, though. It still follows a specific purpose or set of guiding propositions that keep the inquiry focused.
They Capture What Experiments Miss
Surveys and controlled experiments are good at isolating variables, but they strip away the messy context that often matters most. A lab study on how a medication affects motor skills, for instance, tests rested, healthy volunteers in a controlled environment. That tells you very little about how stressed patients perform on the same tasks in daily life. This gap is what researchers call ecological validity: whether findings actually generalize to real-world settings.
Case studies excel here because they observe subjects in natural conditions. A researcher studying how a school implements a new literacy program doesn’t pull teachers into a lab. They watch the program unfold in actual classrooms, with real students, real budget constraints, and real disruptions. The result is data that reflects how things work in practice, not just in theory. This richness of context is one of the main reasons case studies remain a staple across disciplines, from medicine to business to education.
They Reveal Rare and Emerging Phenomena
Some of the most consequential discoveries in medicine started as individual case reports. The first documented cases of what turned out to be HIV/AIDS were published as a case series describing Kaposi’s sarcoma in patients who shared homosexual practices, suggesting sexual transmission of an unknown infection. Single case reports also provided the earliest alerts for influenza virus, Ebola virus, and SARS-CoV before any of those escalated into global outbreaks.
Genetic conditions like neurofibromatosis type 1, trisomy 18, and Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome were all first identified and published as single case reports. You can’t design a randomized trial for a disease nobody knows exists yet. Case studies fill that gap by documenting the unexpected: unusual observations, adverse responses to therapies, unfamiliar combinations of conditions, or outcomes that challenge existing theories. They also play a critical role in drug safety surveillance, since a single well-documented report of an adverse effect can trigger broader investigation and, potentially, regulatory action.
They Handle Complexity Across Disciplines
Case studies aren’t limited to medicine. In business education, the case method is a core teaching and research tool because it mirrors how decisions actually get made. Real business problems come with incomplete information, competing stakeholder interests, and time pressure. A case study forces you to work within those constraints, analyzing a situation with limited data and deciding on a course of action, just as you would in practice.
In psychology, case studies have historically been the foundation for understanding individual behavior in depth, from Freud’s early clinical cases to modern neuropsychological profiles of patients with rare brain injuries. In education research, they allow investigators to study how policies and programs play out in specific schools or districts, capturing the local factors that determine whether an initiative succeeds or fails. The method adapts to virtually any field where context matters, which is most of them.
They Use Multiple Evidence Sources to Offset Bias
The most common criticism of case studies is subjectivity. A single researcher studying a single subject can see what they want to see. Good case study design addresses this through triangulation: combining multiple data sources, methods, or even researchers from different disciplines so that findings have to converge before they’re accepted.
In practice, this means a researcher might pair interviews with document analysis and quantitative records, then check whether they tell the same story. Sometimes they don’t, and that’s actually valuable. In one nursing study, questionnaire data indicated that nurse practitioners and general practitioners experienced high levels of collaboration and satisfaction. But when the same participants were interviewed qualitatively, a more ambivalent picture emerged. The contradiction itself became a finding, revealing a gap between what people report on surveys and how they actually experience their work. This kind of nuance is difficult to capture with any single method, and it’s one reason triangulated case studies can be more informative than they first appear.
They Build Theory From the Ground Up
Large quantitative studies are excellent for testing existing theories, but they’re poorly suited to building new ones. Case studies work in the opposite direction. By immersing a researcher in a single context, they surface patterns, mechanisms, and relationships that nobody thought to measure. These observations become the raw material for new theoretical frameworks that can then be tested at scale.
This is especially useful in emerging fields or when studying phenomena that don’t fit neatly into existing categories. A researcher studying a novel organizational structure, a newly identified clinical presentation, or an unexpected policy outcome needs the flexibility to follow the evidence wherever it leads. Case studies provide that flexibility while still requiring systematic data collection and analysis. The result is often a richer, more grounded theory than one developed purely from statistical patterns in large datasets.
Practical Limits to Keep in Mind
Case studies are powerful, but they aren’t interchangeable with other methods. Their findings typically can’t be generalized to a broader population the way a randomized trial’s can. A single case, no matter how well documented, doesn’t prove that the same dynamics apply elsewhere. What it does is provide a detailed, credible account that informs future research and, in clinical settings, alerts other practitioners to possibilities they might not have considered.
The quality of a case study also depends heavily on how it’s conducted and reported. In medical research, published case reports are expected to include a clear case history, examination results, treatment plans, expected versus actual outcomes, and a discussion connecting the findings to existing literature. The discussion section is considered the most important part, because it’s where the author explains why the case matters and what it adds to current knowledge. Without that rigor, a case study risks being dismissed as anecdotal rather than treated as genuine evidence.
