Yellow is the most common eye color in cats, and it comes down to a specific pigment called lipochrome. This yellow-toned pigment sits in the iris and, combined with varying amounts of melanin (the same dark pigment that colors fur and skin), produces the range of golden, amber, and deep copper shades you see across different cats and breeds.
How Two Pigments Create Yellow Eyes
Cat eye color is determined by two pigments working together in the iris: melanin and lipochrome. Melanin produces dark tones like brown and black, while lipochrome produces lighter tones, particularly yellow. When a cat’s iris contains a moderate to high amount of lipochrome and a relatively low amount of melanin, the result is a bright yellow or golden eye. As melanin increases, that yellow deepens into amber, then copper, then orange-brown.
The pigment comes from specialized cells called melanocytes that live in the iris. What matters isn’t just whether these cells are present, but how many there are and how actively they’re producing pigment. A cat with highly active melanocytes will have darker, richer eye color. A cat with fewer or less active melanocytes will have lighter, brighter eyes. This is why yellow-eyed cats exist on a spectrum: pale lemon, vivid gold, warm amber, and deep copper are all variations of the same underlying system working at different intensities.
Green eyes, interestingly, are what happens when a small amount of lipochrome combines with the way light scatters through the iris tissue. Blue eyes contain very little pigment at all, and the blue color is purely an optical effect, similar to why the sky looks blue.
Why Kittens Start With Blue Eyes
Nearly all kittens are born with blue eyes regardless of what color they’ll end up with. This happens because melanocytes in the iris haven’t started producing significant pigment yet at birth. As the kitten grows, those cells ramp up production, and the eyes gradually shift color.
The transition typically begins around 7 weeks of age, when the blue starts giving way to hints of the adult color. By 12 weeks, most kittens have settled into their permanent eye color. Some cats take a bit longer, with subtle shifts continuing up to about 6 months. If your kitten’s eyes are turning golden or amber, that’s the lipochrome and melanin levels reaching their genetically determined set point.
Genetics Behind the Color
Eye color in cats is a polygenic trait, meaning it’s influenced by multiple genes rather than a single on-off switch. These genes collectively control how many melanocytes develop in the iris, how active they are, and the ratio of melanin to lipochrome they produce. This is why two cats from the same litter can end up with noticeably different eye shades. British Shorthair breeders, for example, report that siblings from the same parents sometimes end up with copper eyes and yellow eyes respectively, even when both are pedigreed cats with carefully tracked lineages.
You might assume that a cat with dark fur would automatically have dark eyes, since both traits involve melanin. The relationship isn’t that straightforward. While the same broad pigmentation genes can influence both coat and eye color, the melanocytes in the iris and the melanocytes in the skin are independent cell populations with their own regulatory pathways. This is why a jet-black cat can have bright yellow eyes, or a white cat can have deep copper ones. There’s some correlation between coat and eye color at the population level, but it’s far from a strict one-to-one link.
Why Yellow Is So Common
Yellow and gold are the default eye colors for cats with a moderate level of pigmentation, which describes the majority of the domestic cat population. Blue eyes require very little pigment (and are often linked to specific coat color genetics like the pointed or white patterns). Green eyes require a precise, low level of lipochrome. Orange and copper require high melanocyte activity. Yellow sits right in the broad middle of the pigmentation spectrum, which is statistically where most cats land.
Wild and feral cats overwhelmingly have yellow or green eyes, suggesting this color range may have been the ancestral norm before selective breeding pushed certain populations toward extremes like deep copper or vivid blue.
Breeds Known for Yellow and Copper Eyes
Some breeds have been selectively bred to emphasize deep yellow, gold, or copper eye color as part of their formal breed standard. The Bombay is a classic example: breeders specifically aim for vivid copper eyes paired with a sleek black coat. British Shorthairs, particularly the “British Blue” variety, are also prized for rich copper or deep golden eyes, and pedigreed examples of the breed consistently show intense eye color compared to mixed-breed cats.
Other breeds where yellow to copper eyes are common or preferred include the Burmese, American Shorthair, Exotic Shorthair, and Scottish Fold. In these cases, generations of selective breeding have concentrated the genes for high melanocyte activity in the iris, producing reliably deep, warm eye tones.
When Yellow Eyes Change or Look Different
A healthy adult cat’s eye color is stable. If your cat’s eyes have always been yellow, that’s simply their genetic pigmentation at work. However, a noticeable change in eye color in an adult cat, especially if one eye changes and the other doesn’t, can signal a health issue. Inflammation inside the eye can alter how the iris looks, sometimes making it appear darker, redder, or muddier than usual. Certain conditions affecting the eye can also cause a brownish discoloration of the iris that’s distinct from normal pigmentation.
The other common scenario is noticing that your cat’s eyes look different colors under different lighting. Because cat eye color depends partly on how light interacts with the iris structure, yellow eyes can appear more green in some lighting conditions and more amber in others. This is normal optical variation, not an actual color change.
