MMA, or methyl methacrylate, is restricted in nail products because it causes skin reactions, damages natural nails, and creates a bond so rigid it can injure the nail bed on impact. The FDA removed nail products containing 100% MMA from the market in the early 1970s after receiving numerous complaints of fingernail damage, deformity, and contact dermatitis. Despite this, MMA hasn’t been fully banned by federal regulation, and it still shows up in some nail salons today, typically at a fraction of the cost of safer alternatives.
What the FDA Actually Did
In the early 1970s, the FDA began receiving injury reports from people who had gotten acrylic nails made with pure MMA monomer. The complaints included nail deformity, nails separating from the nail bed, and allergic skin reactions. After consulting with dermatologists, the FDA pursued court action to pull these products from shelves, resulting in seizures, voluntary recalls, and a preliminary injunction against one manufacturer.
Here’s the important nuance: no federal regulation specifically prohibits MMA in cosmetic products. The FDA’s enforcement targeted products containing 100% MMA monomer, but lower concentrations remain in a legal gray area. Some states have stepped in to fill that gap. California’s Board of Barbering and Cosmetology prohibited MMA-containing nail products in licensed salons and cosmetology schools in 2015. Arizona’s cosmetology board has also warned consumers about salons using the chemical. But enforcement varies widely, and MMA products continue to circulate in the U.S. and internationally.
Why MMA Damages Your Nails
The core problem with MMA is that it’s too strong for nails. It was originally developed for industrial and dental applications, where extreme hardness is desirable. On a fingernail, that rigidity becomes a liability. If you accidentally knock or catch an MMA acrylic nail on something, the acrylic won’t break or flex. Instead, the force transfers directly to your natural nail, potentially lifting it from the nail bed or causing painful injury.
MMA also bonds poorly to the nail surface compared to safer alternatives, which creates a second problem. To compensate, nail technicians have to aggressively file or etch the natural nail plate to give the product something to grip. This thinning and roughing weakens the natural nail and can cause onycholysis, a condition where the nail separates from the underlying skin. Over time, clients end up with nails that are thinner, weaker, and more prone to infection.
Removal is another ordeal. MMA acrylic resists acetone, the standard solvent used to dissolve acrylics. Instead of breaking down cleanly, it turns into a gummy, gel-like substance that clings to the nail. Getting it off often requires excessive filing or drilling, which causes even more damage to the natural nail underneath.
Health Risks Beyond the Nail
MMA is a recognized skin irritant and sensitizer. Repeated exposure, whether you’re a client or a nail technician, can trigger contact dermatitis: red, itchy, sometimes blistering skin around the nails and fingertips. Once your immune system becomes sensitized to MMA, you may react to it permanently, and that sensitivity can extend to related chemicals in the same family.
This matters more than you might think. Acrylate compounds similar to MMA are used in dental crowns, dentures, and even bone cement for joint replacements. Developing an allergy to acrylates from nail product exposure could complicate future medical procedures. Dental professionals who work with MMA have reported hypersensitivity reactions, asthma-like symptoms, and localized skin irritation from occupational exposure.
For nail technicians who handle MMA daily, the risks are more serious. The chemical produces strong fumes that irritate the respiratory tract. Long-term occupational exposure has been linked to neurological symptoms, including numbness and tingling in the hands. One documented case involved a dental technician who developed nerve-related symptoms in both hands after 20 years of MMA exposure. Studies of Finnish dental workers exposed to MMA found elevated rates of both dermatitis and neuropathy.
How MMA Differs From the Safe Alternative
Professional-grade acrylic nail products use ethyl methacrylate (EMA) instead of MMA. The two chemicals are closely related, but EMA is far better suited for use on nails. EMA forms a bond that’s strong enough to hold an acrylic nail in place but flexible enough to break cleanly on impact rather than ripping the natural nail with it. It doesn’t require aggressive filing of the nail plate for adhesion, and it dissolves in acetone for straightforward removal.
EMA products cost roughly three times more than MMA, which is the main reason some salons still use MMA despite the risks. The price difference allows salons to offer full sets at unusually low prices, which can be a red flag for consumers.
How to Spot MMA in a Nail Salon
You can’t always tell from looking at a bottle, but several signs point to MMA use:
- Smell: MMA has a strong, sharp chemical odor that’s noticeably harsher than normal acrylic liquid. If the salon smells intensely chemical even with ventilation, that’s a warning sign.
- Hardness: MMA acrylic sets extremely hard and feels inflexible on the nail. It’s difficult to file with a standard nail file.
- Price: Full acrylic sets priced well below average for your area may indicate cheaper MMA products.
- Removal difficulty: If your acrylic nails won’t dissolve properly in acetone and instead turn gummy or require heavy drilling to remove, MMA is a likely culprit.
If you suspect a salon is using MMA, you can report it to your state’s cosmetology or barbering board. Many states investigate these complaints, though the level of enforcement depends on local regulations. Asking your nail technician what brand of liquid monomer they use, and checking that the label specifies EMA rather than MMA, is the most direct way to protect yourself before your appointment begins.
