Blurry contact lenses usually come down to one of a handful causes: deposits building up on the lens surface, dry eyes disrupting the tear film, a lens that’s shifted out of position, or a prescription that no longer matches your vision. Most of these are fixable, and identifying the pattern of your blurriness (constant vs. intermittent, worsening throughout the day, or sudden onset) points directly to the likely culprit.
Deposits on the Lens Surface
Your tears contain a mix of proteins and lipids that gradually coat the surface of a contact lens. This buildup is influenced by the lens material, its water content, and your individual tear chemistry. Over time, these deposits scatter light instead of letting it pass cleanly through the lens, creating a hazy or filmy quality to your vision. You might notice it as a general softness rather than sharp blurriness, almost like looking through a slightly dirty window.
Silicone hydrogel lenses, the most common type prescribed today, are particularly prone to lipid deposits because of their hydrophobic surface. Traditional hydrogel lenses tend to attract more protein. Either way, the result is the same: reduced visual clarity, decreased comfort, and a lens that doesn’t stay as wet as it should. Dry Eyes and Tear Film Disruption
A contact lens sits in the middle of your tear film, splitting it into a layer above and below the lens. That top layer is thinner and less stable than a normal tear film, which means it breaks apart faster between blinks. When it does, the lens surface dries out in patches, and those dry spots distort light passing through.
This is why blurriness that comes and goes throughout the day, especially getting worse in the afternoon or evening, often traces back to dryness. Blinking temporarily restores the tear film, so you might notice your vision clears for a second after each blink, then fades again. Screen use makes this dramatically worse. Toric Lens Rotation (Astigmatism Lenses)
If you wear toric lenses to correct astigmatism, you have a cause of blurriness that people with standard lenses don’t deal with. Toric lenses need to sit at a precise angle on your eye because the correction is oriented in a specific direction. When the lens rotates even slightly, that correction no longer lines up with your astigmatism, and your vision drops.
This rotation happens constantly. Blinking, tilting your head, and moving your eyes all shift the lens. During normal activities, vision can fluctuate from perfectly sharp to noticeably blurry and back again. When the oxygen level at the cornea drops below a certain threshold, the surface cells switch to an inefficient form of energy production that generates lactic acid as a byproduct. That lactic acid builds up in the corneal tissue, draws in extra water through osmotic pressure, and the cornea swells.
Mild swelling causes a subtle foggy quality to your vision, particularly noticeable first thing in the morning if you’ve slept in your lenses (the closed eyelid already reduces oxygen, and the lens reduces it further). More significant swelling makes the cornea visibly hazy. This is one of the reasons sleeping in contacts carries real risk. Extended wear lens users have significantly worse visual outcomes when complications arise compared to daily or monthly wearers. If your vision is consistently foggy when you wake up and clears after removing your lenses for a while, oxygen deprivation and corneal swelling are the likely cause.
Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis
Sometimes the blurriness comes not from the lens itself but from your body’s reaction to it. Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) is an inflammatory response where the underside of your upper eyelid develops raised bumps. These bumps produce thick, sometimes stringy mucus that coats the lens and disrupts vision. The condition is triggered by friction between the lens and eyelid, allergic reactions to lens materials or cleaning solutions, or buildup of proteins and debris on the lens.
GPC typically affects both eyes and comes with a package of symptoms beyond blurriness: red eyes, itching, soreness, a feeling like something is stuck in your eye, and sometimes a droopy eyelid. If you’re experiencing several of these together, GPC is worth investigating. Treatment usually involves taking a break from lens wear and switching to daily disposable lenses, which minimize the deposit accumulation that drives the inflammatory cycle.
Your Prescription May Have Changed
If your lenses are clean, comfortable, and well-fitted but still blurry, the simplest explanation is that your eyes have changed. Nearsightedness can progress gradually, especially through your twenties and sometimes into your thirties. Farsightedness becomes more relevant after 40 as the lens inside your eye stiffens. Hygiene Mistakes That Cause Blurriness
Lens care shortcuts create problems ranging from mild deposit buildup to serious infection. One of the most dangerous is using tap water to rinse or store lenses. Tap water contains a microorganism called Acanthamoeba that attaches to lens surfaces and can cause a severe eye infection with symptoms including intense pain and a whitish halo at the edge of the eye. According to the EPA, this infection can last weeks to months and never fully heals despite treatment.
Only commercially made sterile solutions should touch your lenses or lens case. Homemade saline, tap water, and saliva all introduce contaminants that either damage the lens surface (causing persistent blurriness) or infect the cornea (causing blurriness along with pain and redness). Lens cases themselves should be cleaned with sterile solution, not water, and replaced regularly.
Daily Disposables vs. Extended Wear
Your lens replacement schedule directly affects how likely you are to experience blurriness and how severe the consequences can be. Daily disposable lenses start fresh each day, which eliminates deposit buildup entirely and reduces the chance of solution-related reactions. Monthly lenses accumulate more deposits and carry a higher rate of corneal ulcers when infections do occur. Extended wear lenses, designed to be worn overnight, carry the highest risk. In one study, all patients wearing extended wear lenses who developed infections were diagnosed with corneal ulcers, and their final visual outcomes were significantly worse than those of daily or monthly lens users.
