Why Are My Eyes Red and Burning: Causes and Fixes

Red, burning eyes are most often caused by dryness, allergies, or some form of irritation to the eye’s surface. These are rarely dangerous, but the combination of redness and burning can also signal an infection or inflammation that needs treatment. The key to figuring out what’s going on lies in the details: what kind of discharge you have (if any), whether your eyes itch, and how long symptoms have lasted.

Dry Eye: The Most Common Culprit

Dry eye disease affects roughly 1 in 11 people worldwide, and burning with redness is its signature complaint. Your eyes stay comfortable because a thin layer of tears constantly coats their surface. When that tear film breaks down, whether from not producing enough tears or producing tears that evaporate too quickly, the exposed surface becomes saltier than normal. That increased saltiness triggers a chain of inflammatory signals in the cells lining your eye, which causes redness, irritation, and a gritty or burning sensation that can persist for hours.

What makes dry eye particularly frustrating is that the inflammation damages the surface further, which makes the tear film even less stable, which creates more inflammation. It becomes a self-reinforcing cycle. Common triggers include spending long hours on screens, dry indoor air, contact lens wear, and aging. Women are affected more often than men. If your symptoms are worst at the end of the day or after extended reading or computer work, dryness is the likely cause.

Screen Time and Blink Rate

If your eyes burn most after using a computer or phone, the explanation is surprisingly mechanical. You blink far less when staring at a screen. Studies have measured blink rates dropping from around 18 blinks per minute during normal activity to as few as 3 to 4 blinks per minute during focused screen use. Since blinking is what spreads fresh tears across your eye, this dramatic reduction leaves your cornea exposed and drying out.

The 20-20-20 rule is the simplest countermeasure: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This gives your eyes a chance to refocus and blink at a normal rate. Reducing screen glare, improving room lighting, and consciously blinking more often during computer work all help as well.

Allergies vs. Infection: How to Tell the Difference

Both allergies and infections cause red, irritated eyes, but they behave differently and need different responses.

Allergic Conjunctivitis

Itching is the hallmark. If your red, burning eyes also itch intensely, allergies are the most likely explanation. The discharge tends to be watery and clear, sometimes with stringy mucus. Both eyes are usually affected. Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious, and it often comes with other allergy symptoms like sneezing or a runny nose. Seasonal patterns (worse in spring or fall) or clear triggers (pets, dust, pollen) make this even more obvious.

Viral Conjunctivitis

This is the classic “pink eye.” It typically starts in one eye and may spread to the other within a day or two. The discharge is watery, and you may notice your eyes feel gritty or sensitive to light. It often accompanies or follows a cold. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious through direct contact and generally resolves on its own within one to two weeks.

Bacterial Conjunctivitis

The giveaway here is thick, yellow-white discharge that crusts your eyelids shut overnight and reforms quickly after you wipe it away. One detail worth knowing: about 58% of people with culture-confirmed bacterial conjunctivitis also report itchy eyes, so itching alone doesn’t rule out a bacterial cause. Bacterial conjunctivitis spreads through direct contact with infected secretions and is also self-limiting in many cases, though antibiotic drops can shorten the course.

Eyelid Inflammation (Blepharitis)

If your burning and redness seem concentrated along your eyelid margins rather than across the whole eye, blepharitis may be the cause. This is a chronic inflammation of the eyelids that produces a foreign-body sensation, crusting at the base of your eyelashes, and redness along the lid edge. You might notice greasy flakes or small crusty deposits clinging to your lashes, especially in the morning.

Blepharitis is closely related to a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction, where the tiny oil glands in your eyelids become blocked. These glands normally secrete an oily layer that prevents your tears from evaporating too fast. When they’re clogged, you get both lid irritation and secondary dryness. Warm compresses and gentle lid cleaning are the standard home care, and the condition tends to be chronic but manageable.

Environmental and Chemical Irritants

Sometimes the answer is straightforward: something got in your eyes. Common culprits include dust, smoke, cleaning product fumes, chlorine from swimming pools, pesticides, and air pollutants like ozone and particulate matter. Workplace exposures to cement dust, wood chips, or chemical vapors are another frequent cause.

For mild irritants, the eye surface can typically repair itself once the exposure stops. UV overexposure (from a day at the beach without sunglasses, or from welding without protection) causes a painful condition where the corneal surface is damaged, but healing usually completes within a few days. More severe chemical exposures, particularly to strong acids or alkalis, can cause lasting damage and warrant immediate flushing with clean water and prompt medical evaluation.

Over-the-Counter Eye Drops: What Actually Helps

Not all eye drops work the same way, and picking the wrong type can make things worse. There are two main categories on store shelves, and understanding the difference matters.

Artificial tears (lubricant drops) add moisture to your eye’s surface and help stabilize the tear film. These are the right choice for dryness-related burning and are safe for frequent use. Look for drops labeled as lubricants or artificial tears.

Redness-relief drops work differently. They contain a vasoconstrictor (a chemical that shrinks blood vessels) to make the redness disappear cosmetically, along with a lubricant for comfort. The problem is that with regular use, your blood vessels can rebound and become even more dilated once the drops wear off, leaving you redder than before. These drops are fine for occasional use before a photo or an event, but they don’t address the underlying cause and can create a dependency cycle if used daily.

For allergic eyes, antihistamine eye drops target the itch and inflammation directly and are a better long-term option than redness relievers.

When Red, Burning Eyes Signal Something Serious

Most cases of red, burning eyes resolve with basic care or time. But certain symptoms alongside redness point to conditions that need prompt attention:

  • Sudden vision changes or blurring that doesn’t clear with blinking could indicate a corneal ulcer, acute glaucoma, or inflammation inside the eye (uveitis).
  • Severe eye pain, especially with nausea or vomiting, may signal acute glaucoma, which involves a sudden spike in eye pressure.
  • Intense light sensitivity alongside deep, aching pain suggests inflammation of the internal eye structures rather than a surface issue.
  • Double vision with redness or headache can indicate neurological involvement that requires urgent evaluation.
  • Redness after eye injury, particularly if you were hammering, grinding, or working with chemicals, needs same-day assessment to rule out corneal scratches, embedded foreign bodies, or chemical burns.

Acute glaucoma in particular is a medical emergency. It causes intense pain, redness, blurred vision, and sometimes halos around lights, and it can permanently damage your optic nerve within hours if untreated. The more common, chronic form of glaucoma develops gradually and doesn’t cause red eyes.
