Nails peel when the layers of the nail plate lose their ability to stick together, causing thin sheets to crack and flake away from the free edge. This is called lamellar onychoschizia, and it’s one of the most common nail complaints. The cause is almost always environmental, but in some cases peeling nails signal a nutritional gap or an underlying health condition worth addressing.
How the Nail Plate Holds Together
Your nail is built from a tough protein called keratin, which gets its hardness from sulfur-rich amino acids, especially cysteine. Cysteine makes up as much as 22% of nail keratin and forms strong chemical bridges (disulfide bonds) that stiffen the entire structure. When the number of these bonds decreases, nails become more brittle, breakable, and prone to peeling. Lipids between the cells act like glue holding the layers together. Anything that strips those lipids or disrupts those bonds can cause the nail to separate into horizontal sheets.
Water Exposure Is the Most Common Cause
Repeated wetting and drying is the single biggest driver of peeling nails. Every time your hands get soaked and then air-dry, the nail plate swells and contracts, creating tiny fractures between layers. This is especially common among people who wash dishes without gloves, healthcare workers who wash their hands frequently, and hairdressers whose hands are constantly in and out of water.
Wearing occlusive gloves over already-wet hands can make things worse rather than better, trapping moisture against the nail and softening it further. If you use gloves for wet work, put them on while your hands are dry, or wear thin cotton gloves underneath rubber ones to absorb moisture.
Chemicals That Strip the Nail
Solvents, cleaning products, and acetone-based nail polish removers dissolve the intercellular lipids that bond nail layers together. Occupational exposure matters here: people who regularly handle chemicals, paints, or photographic solutions see higher rates of brittle, peeling nails.
Nail hardeners deserve special attention. Many contain formaldehyde (sometimes labeled as “formalin” or methylene glycol), which cross-links with keratin to make nails feel harder at first. With repeated use, though, formaldehyde-based hardeners actually make nails more brittle and more likely to peel. If you’re using a nail hardener and your peeling has gotten worse, check the ingredient list.
Nutritional Gaps That Weaken Nails
Iron Deficiency
Chronic iron deficiency is one of the best-established nutritional causes of nail changes. When iron stores drop low enough, nails can become thin, brittle, and eventually spoon-shaped, a condition called koilonychia. The mechanism likely involves reduced iron in the enzymes that support nail cell growth, along with poorer blood flow to the nail bed. If your nails are peeling and you also experience fatigue, pale skin, or shortness of breath, iron deficiency is worth investigating with a blood test.
Protein and Sulfur Amino Acids
Because nails are essentially pure keratin, building them requires a steady supply of protein, particularly the sulfur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine. Diets very low in protein can slow nail growth and weaken the structure. This is rarely an issue for people eating a varied diet, but it can matter for those with restrictive eating patterns or absorption problems.
Biotin
Biotin (vitamin B7) has the strongest evidence for improving brittle, peeling nails among supplements. In three separate studies, a daily dose of 2.5 mg taken for roughly 6 months produced firmer, harder nails in 63% to 91% of participants with brittle or splitting nails. That dose is far above the typical dietary intake, so it generally requires a supplement. Results take months to appear because you’re waiting for an entirely new nail to grow in.
What About Calcium?
Calcium is one of the most common guesses people make about nail health, but it plays a surprisingly small role. Calcium makes up only about 0.2% of the nail plate by weight and does not contribute meaningfully to nail hardness. Severe drops in blood calcium can cause nail changes like white lines or softening, but for the vast majority of people with peeling nails, calcium intake is not the issue.
Health Conditions Linked to Peeling Nails
Thyroid disorders affect nail growth directly. Hypothyroidism slows nail growth and produces thin, fragile nails. Hyperthyroidism can cause brittle nails along with separation of the nail from the nail bed. If peeling nails appear alongside weight changes, temperature sensitivity, or fatigue, thyroid function is worth checking.
Skin conditions that involve the nail matrix can also mimic or worsen simple peeling. Psoriasis affecting the nails typically produces deep pitting (small sharp depressions in the nail surface), yellowish “oil drop” discoloration, and sometimes thickening or crumbling. Eczema and lichen planus can cause similar changes. If your peeling is accompanied by pitting, discoloration, or changes in nail shape rather than just flaking at the tip, a dermatologist can distinguish these from ordinary brittle nail syndrome.
Fungal infections are another possibility, especially if peeling is limited to one or two nails and accompanied by thickening, a chalky white surface, or lifting of the nail from the bed. Fungi invade from the free edge and break down keratin, causing the distal nail to become fragile and flaky.
How Long Recovery Takes
Fingernails grow at an average rate of about 3.5 mm per month. Since a full fingernail is roughly 12 to 15 mm long, it takes three to six months for a completely new nail to replace the damaged one. That means even if you fix the underlying cause today, you won’t see the results at the tip of your nail for several months. Toenails grow much more slowly, around 1.6 mm per month, so recovery there can take a year or more.
Younger people and men tend to have slightly faster nail growth. The pinky nail grows the slowest of all the fingernails.
Practical Steps to Stop the Peeling
Most peeling nails improve with environmental changes alone. The core strategy is reducing water cycling and chemical exposure while supporting the nail’s ability to rebuild.
- Limit wet-dry cycles. Wear dry cotton-lined gloves for dishwashing and cleaning. After washing your hands, apply a moisturizer to the nails and cuticles while they’re still slightly damp to lock in hydration.
- Avoid acetone removers. Switch to acetone-free nail polish removers, which are less aggressive at stripping lipids from the nail plate.
- Skip formaldehyde-based hardeners. These make nails more brittle over time despite feeling effective at first.
- Keep nails shorter. Longer nails catch on things more easily, and mechanical trauma, even minor tugging and bending, contributes to layer separation at the tip.
- Consider biotin. A 2.5 mg daily supplement taken for at least 6 months is the best-studied intervention for brittle nails.
- Check for deficiencies. If peeling is persistent and accompanied by other symptoms like fatigue or hair changes, a blood test for iron (ferritin) and thyroid function can rule out common systemic causes.
Post-menopausal women are especially prone to peeling nails because cholesterol sulfate in the nail plate decreases with age, weakening the bonds between cell layers. The nail’s water content can also drop below the threshold needed for flexibility, making it more likely to crack. Consistent moisturizing and gentle handling become more important with age.
