Why Are the Ackermans Immune to the Founding Titan?

The Ackerman clan in Attack on Titan is immune to both the Founding Titan’s memory manipulation and titanization because their bloodline was genetically altered through ancient Titan science experiments. Unlike ordinary Eldians, Ackermans already carry Titan power within their human bodies, which makes them resistant to the same forces that control every other Subject of Ymir.

How the Ackerman Bloodline Was Created

The Ackermans are the accidental result of the old Eldian Empire’s experiments on Subjects of Ymir using Titan science. The goal was to create super-soldiers who could protect Eldia’s king, and the experiments succeeded in producing a bloodline that could manifest the Power of the Titans as humans, without ever needing to transform into a Titan or inherit one of the Nine Titans. They served as the monarchy’s right hand, entrusted with the survival of their people.

This origin is revealed in the story through Zeke Yeager, who shares what he learned from his research (and from the previous Beast Titan holder, Tom Ksaver). Zeke explains to Eren that the Ackermans were the product of these experiments, which is why they possess abilities far beyond any normal human.

Why the Founding Titan Can’t Erase Their Memories

When King Fritz raised the Walls and used the Founding Titan to wipe the memories of all Eldians inside, two groups were unaffected: the Ackerman clan and the Asian bloodlines. Kenny Ackerman’s grandfather explained this directly. The Ackermans were not hated by the crown, he said, but feared, precisely because their memories could not be erased by the king’s power.

The reason ties back to their altered DNA. Although Ackermans are technically classified as Subjects of Ymir, their bloodline was changed enough by Titan science that the Founding Titan no longer recognizes them the same way it does ordinary Eldians. The Founding Titan’s ability to rewrite memories works through a biological connection to all Subjects of Ymir, but the Ackermans sit in a gray area. They are Eldian by heritage, yet their genetic modification puts them outside the Founding Titan’s reach when it comes to mental influence.

This is why the Ackerman and Asian families were persecuted inside the Walls. They were the only people who remembered the truth about the outside world, making them a threat to the king’s carefully constructed ignorance.

Why Ackermans Can’t Be Turned Into Titans

The same modification that blocks memory wiping also prevents Ackermans from transforming into Pure Titans. The logic works like a vaccine analogy: because Ackermans already carry a version of Titan power integrated into their human bodies, introducing Titan spinal fluid doesn’t trigger the usual transformation. They are, in a sense, already “titanized” at a cellular level.

This is confirmed late in the story during the battle at Fort Slatyne, when Titan gas is released and turns nearby Eldians into Pure Titans. Both Levi and Mikasa are exposed to the gas but remain completely human. The same principle applies to Titan Shifters, who also can’t be turned into Pure Titans because they already possess Titan power. Ackermans function on a similar mechanism, just without the need to physically shift into a giant body.

The “Awakening” and Titan Strength in Human Form

Ackermans don’t simply have good genetics in the ordinary sense. Their combat abilities activate through a moment of intense survival pressure, often described as an “awakening.” Both Mikasa and Levi experienced this: a moment of extreme danger where something clicked, and their physical abilities surged far beyond what any normal person could achieve.

What happens in that moment is that the Ackerman gains access to the Power of the Titans while staying fully human. This is what gives them their extraordinary strength, speed, and durability. Essentially, an awakened Ackerman channels the raw physical power that a Titan possesses, compressed into a normal-sized human body. This is why Levi can cut through Titans with a speed that borders on superhuman, and why Mikasa can overpower trained soldiers with seemingly effortless force. They are not just skilled fighters. Their bodies are operating with power that no amount of training could replicate in an ordinary person.

The Ackermans were designed this way on purpose. The Eldian Empire wanted bodyguards who could wield Titan-level power without the drawbacks of actually becoming a Titan: the limited lifespan, the loss of human intelligence in Pure Titan form, and the political complications of the Nine Titans. The result was a bloodline of human-sized warriors with Titan strength and none of the usual vulnerabilities.

Ackermans as Subjects of Ymir

One point that causes confusion is whether Ackermans are actually Subjects of Ymir or something separate. The answer is both. They are Subjects of Ymir by bloodline, descended from the same Eldian population connected to Ymir Fritz. But their modification through Titan science altered them enough that the usual rules don’t fully apply. They can’t be memory-wiped. They can’t be turned into Pure Titans. Yet they still benefit from a connection to Titan power, which is what fuels their superhuman abilities.

Think of it as a spectrum. Ordinary Subjects of Ymir are fully susceptible to the Founding Titan’s control and can be transformed into Titans at will. Titan Shifters hold specific Titan powers but are still subject to the Founder’s influence. Ackermans occupy a unique position where they carry Titan power in their blood but have slipped outside the control mechanisms that govern everyone else. That independence is exactly what made them so valuable to the old Eldian kings, and so dangerous to the one who chose to erase the world’s memory.
