In a natural environment, populations are regulated by lean seasons, particularly winter, when natural caches can be depleted. Urban settings, however, provide a constant subsidy of energy-rich food that effectively eliminates this seasonal bottleneck.

Human landscaping features like ornamental trees and gardens offer a steady supply of nuts, seeds, and fruit. Unintentional sources are even more substantial. Bird feeders, for instance, are high-fat, high-protein buffets stocked with sunflower seeds and peanuts easily accessible to opportunistic feeders. Furthermore, poorly secured trash receptacles and compost piles provide continuous access to human food waste, which urban squirrels readily consume, especially during colder months. This consistent caloric intake directly supports a higher number of individuals per area, allowing the population to exceed the carrying capacity of a natural forest.

Safe Urban Habitats

The built environment offers squirrels a superior array of safe and weatherproof locations for shelter and raising young compared to strictly natural habitats. While squirrels build leaf-and-twig nests called dreys high in tree canopies, the availability of artificial structures dramatically increases the quality of available housing. Buildings provide protected, insulated, and dry cavities that are often preferred over natural tree hollows or external dreys, where juvenile survival rates are lower.

Squirrels frequently exploit architectural vulnerabilities, gaining entry through openings like loose roof vents, damaged soffits, or uncapped chimneys. Once inside, attics, eaves, and wall voids function as secure, warm nurseries, where they construct nests from insulation, paper, and other soft materials they find. This protection from harsh weather and competition allows for better thermoregulation and energy conservation, contributing to the overall health and population density.

The urban landscape provides a near-total release from the pressure of natural predators that regulate populations elsewhere. Apex predators like large raptors, coyotes, and foxes are either absent or present in significantly reduced numbers in dense urban centers.
