At two months old, your baby’s internal clock simply hasn’t developed yet. Newborns don’t produce their own melatonin, the hormone that signals sleepiness when it gets dark, so they lack the biological mechanism that helps older children and adults wind down. This single fact explains most of the sleep-fighting behavior you’re seeing, but several other factors pile on at exactly this age to make the problem feel especially intense.
Their Body Clock Isn’t Online Yet
Human fetuses and newborns don’t secrete melatonin. During pregnancy, babies rely on the mother’s melatonin passing through the placenta. After birth, that supply disappears if you’re not breastfeeding, and even breastfed babies only get small amounts through milk. Your baby’s own melatonin production starts gradually, with measurable nighttime melatonin rhythms appearing around 45 to 60 days of life in some infants, and later in others.
Without a functioning circadian rhythm, your baby doesn’t feel a natural pull toward sleep when the room gets dark or the evening arrives. To them, 9 p.m. feels no different from 2 p.m. So when you try to put them down at a consistent bedtime, you’re essentially asking their body to do something it doesn’t yet know how to do. This isn’t a behavioral problem. It’s a developmental one, and it resolves on its own as the circadian system matures over the next several weeks.
The Overtired Trap
Two-month-olds can only handle about one to two hours of wakefulness before they need sleep again. That window is shorter than most parents expect, and it’s easy to miss. When a baby stays awake past their limit, their stress response kicks in, flooding the body with cortisol and adrenaline. Cortisol regulates the sleep-wake cycle, and adrenaline triggers a fight-or-flight state. The result is a baby who looks wired, fussy, and paradoxically more awake, even though they desperately need rest.
This is the overtired trap: the longer your baby stays awake past their window, the harder it becomes for them to fall asleep. They cry, squirm, arch their back, and resist every soothing attempt. Parents often interpret this as the baby not being tired enough and try to keep them up longer, which only deepens the cycle. Watching the clock from the moment your baby wakes up and starting your wind-down routine before that one-to-two-hour mark can prevent the cortisol surge before it starts.
Tired Signs to Watch For
Your baby gives physical cues that they’re getting sleepy, but at two months these signs are subtle and easy to confuse with hunger or general fussiness. Early tired signs include yawning, staring into space, fluttering eyelids, and pulling at their ears. You might notice them clenching their fists, making jerky arm and leg movements, or frowning with a worried expression. Some babies suck on their fingers when tired, which is actually a self-soothing attempt.
These early cues are the ideal time to start settling your baby. By the time they’re crying, arching backward, or becoming hyperactive and difficult to engage, they’ve likely crossed into overtired territory. The window between “getting sleepy” and “too far gone” can be as short as 10 to 15 minutes at this age, so acting on the first sign you notice makes a real difference.
Peak Fussiness Happens at Two Months
There’s a well-documented pattern of increased crying in young infants sometimes called the Period of PURPLE Crying. It peaks during the second month of life and gradually tapers off by the end of the fifth month. Babies in this period cry more in the late afternoon and evening, often inconsolably, even when they’re perfectly healthy and growing well.
This evening fussiness overlaps directly with bedtime for many families, making it look like the baby is specifically fighting sleep. In reality, the crying may have nothing to do with sleep resistance at all. It’s a normal developmental phase. If your baby is gaining weight, feeding well, and seems content during other parts of the day but falls apart every evening, this pattern is the likely explanation. It doesn’t mean something is wrong, and it doesn’t mean your soothing techniques are failing.
Growth Spurts and Cluster Feeding
Around eight weeks, many babies go through a growth spurt that lasts a few days. During this time, they want to feed more frequently, especially in the late afternoon and evening. This cluster feeding meets their increased calorie needs but also creates a pattern that disrupts sleep: the baby feeds, dozes briefly, wakes hungry again, feeds more, and never settles into a deep stretch of rest.
Fussiness increases during growth spurts too, and that general irritability can look a lot like sleep resistance. If your baby was sleeping reasonably well and suddenly seems to fight every nap and bedtime while also wanting to eat constantly, a growth spurt is a strong possibility. These episodes are short-lived, typically resolving within two to four days.
This Isn’t a Sleep Regression
You may have come across the term “sleep regression” while searching for answers. Sleep specialists generally recognize regressions at 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, and 24 months, tied to specific developmental milestones like learning to crawl or walk. Two months isn’t on that list. There’s actually very little formal research on sleep regressions at any age, and the term has no strict medical definition.
What’s happening at two months is better understood as the collision of several normal developmental factors: an immature circadian system, peak fussiness, growth spurts, and very short wake windows. Calling it a “regression” implies your baby lost a skill they previously had, but at this age, the ability to self-settle was never established in the first place. This framing matters because it changes your expectations. You’re not fixing a problem. You’re waiting for a brain to mature while keeping things as calm as possible in the meantime.
What Actually Helps
Since the core issue is biological immaturity, no technique will eliminate sleep fighting entirely at this age. But you can reduce its intensity. Start your soothing routine early, within 60 to 90 minutes of your baby waking, before overtiredness sets in. A short, repeatable wind-down sequence (dimming lights, gentle rocking, quiet sounds) begins to build associations that will serve your baby well once their circadian rhythm comes online.
Expose your baby to natural light during the day and keep things dark and boring at night. This light-dark contrast is one of the strongest signals that helps the developing circadian system calibrate. One case study found that an infant exposed primarily to natural light developed measurable sleep-wake rhythms earlier than typically reported, with nighttime sleep onset aligning with sunset by around 60 days.
If your baby is cluster feeding in the evenings, follow their lead. Trying to stretch feeding intervals during a growth spurt just adds hunger on top of the fussiness they’re already experiencing. Let them eat as much as they want, and treat the cluster-feeding phase as temporary.
When your baby does fall asleep, place them on their back in their own sleep space on a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet. Keep the crib free of loose blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, and bumpers. Avoid letting a baby who finally fell asleep stay in a swing, car seat, or on a couch or armchair, even if moving them feels risky. The hardest part of this stage is that it resolves gradually rather than all at once.
