If you had a serious illness in the weeks before your blood draw, your lipid panel may not reflect your true baseline. Retesting after full recovery, typically two to three months later, gives a more accurate picture.
Aging and Reduced Physical Activity
Cholesterol naturally rises with age, particularly LDL. Your liver becomes less efficient at clearing LDL from the blood as you get older, and body composition shifts toward more fat and less muscle even if your weight stays the same. A decrease in physical activity amplifies this. What to Do With an Unexpected Result
The most practical first step is to retest. Given natural variation of up to 10% for LDL, a single high reading doesn’t tell the full story.
