Why Did My Dog Get Kennel Cough If Vaccinated?

Your vaccinated dog can still get kennel cough because the vaccine only targets a fraction of the pathogens that cause the disease. What most people call “kennel cough” is actually a complex of infections involving more than a dozen different viruses and bacteria, and the standard vaccine covers just a few of them. On top of that, even for the pathogen it does target, the vaccine reduces severity rather than guaranteeing prevention.

Kennel Cough Involves Over a Dozen Pathogens

The clinical name for kennel cough is canine infectious respiratory disease complex, or CIRDC, and the word “complex” is doing a lot of work. The most common culprits are the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica, canine parainfluenza virus, and canine adenovirus type 2. But that’s just the starting lineup. Dogs with kennel cough symptoms can also be infected with canine influenza virus (two subtypes: H3N8 and H3N2), canine herpesvirus, canine respiratory coronavirus, canine pneumovirus, canine distemper virus, and several others including bocavirus and reovirus.

On the bacterial side, Mycoplasma cynos is linked to pneumonia in dogs, and Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus has emerged as a cause of severe bronchopneumonia. Secondary bacterial invaders like Pasteurella, Pseudomonas, and Staphylococcus species can pile on once the respiratory tract is already inflamed.

Vaccines are available for Bordetella, canine parainfluenza virus, canine adenovirus 2, canine distemper virus, and canine influenza virus. That leaves canine pneumovirus, Mycoplasma cynos, canine herpesvirus, canine respiratory coronavirus, and several other pathogens with no vaccine at all. If your dog was exposed to one of those, the Bordetella vaccine simply had no way to help.

The Vaccine Reduces Severity, Not Infection

Even when your dog encounters the exact pathogen covered by the vaccine, the shot isn’t a force field. Cornell University’s veterinary college compares it directly to the human flu vaccine: it doesn’t prevent infection, but it lessens symptom severity and reduces the chance of complications like pneumonia. A vaccinated dog that catches Bordetella will typically cough for a shorter period, feel less ill, and be far less likely to need emergency care than an unvaccinated dog.

The numbers bear this out. A placebo-controlled trial in a humane shelter found that two common intranasal vaccines were roughly 20 to 24 percent effective at preventing coughing altogether. That’s a modest reduction in whether dogs coughed at all, but the real value of vaccination shows up in the cases it keeps from becoming dangerous. Think of it less like a brick wall and more like a seatbelt: it won’t stop the collision, but it dramatically improves the outcome.

Timing Matters More Than You’d Expect

Intranasal and oral Bordetella vaccines take about four to seven days to build effective immunity. Injectable versions take even longer because they require two doses spaced a few weeks apart. If your dog was vaccinated right before boarding or a dog park visit, it may not have had enough time to mount a protective immune response.

Kennel cough has an incubation period of two to 14 days. So if your dog was already exposed to the pathogen before the vaccine kicked in, or even picked it up at the vet’s office on vaccination day, the vaccine couldn’t help. It’s not useful in dogs already incubating the infection. This is one of the most common reasons vaccinated dogs develop symptoms shortly after boarding: the exposure happened in the gap before immunity was established.

How Intranasal and Injectable Vaccines Work Differently

Your dog’s respiratory tract has its own local immune defenses, separate from the immune system circulating through the bloodstream. Intranasal vaccines are squirted into the nose, where they stimulate the production of secretory IgA antibodies right on the mucosal surfaces where pathogens first land. These mucosal antibodies are especially good at intercepting germs at the point of entry, and research on nasal vaccines in other species shows that secretory IgA can even provide some cross-protection against pathogen variants that differ from the vaccine strain.

Injectable vaccines, by contrast, primarily stimulate systemic IgG antibodies in the bloodstream. These are effective at reducing the severity of disease once an infection takes hold, but they’re less capable of stopping the pathogen at the surface of the airways. This is why systemic antibodies can reduce how sick a dog gets without fully preventing infection. Both types of vaccine have a role, but neither creates an airtight barrier against every respiratory pathogen your dog might inhale.

High-Exposure Environments Stack the Odds

Boarding facilities, shelters, dog parks, grooming salons, and training classes all concentrate dogs in shared airspace. Respiratory pathogens spread through aerosolized droplets from coughing and sneezing, through direct nose-to-nose contact, and through contaminated surfaces like shared water bowls and kennel walls. The more dogs in a space, the more pathogen strains circulating, and the higher the infectious dose your dog may encounter.

Even well-run facilities with vaccination requirements can’t eliminate risk entirely because not every pathogen has a vaccine, and not every vaccinated dog has reached full immunity. Stress from being away from home can also temporarily suppress your dog’s immune system, making it easier for an infection to take hold. This is why kennel cough outbreaks tend to cluster around holidays and summer months when boarding demand peaks.

What to Expect if Your Vaccinated Dog Gets Sick

The good news is that vaccinated dogs almost always have a milder course of illness. The hallmark symptom is a dry, honking cough that can sound alarming but is typically self-limiting, resolving in one to three weeks. Some dogs also have a runny nose, sneezing, or mild lethargy. Most otherwise healthy, vaccinated dogs recover without needing treatment beyond rest and keeping them away from other dogs to prevent spread.

Where vaccination really pays off is in the cases it prevents from escalating. Unvaccinated dogs, puppies, and dogs with weakened immune systems are far more likely to develop secondary bacterial infections that progress to pneumonia. Signs that the illness is moving beyond a routine case include labored breathing, loss of appetite lasting more than a day or two, thick nasal discharge, fever, or a cough that worsens instead of gradually improving over the first week.

Vaccination is still the best tool available for reducing your dog’s risk, even though it can’t eliminate it. Keeping your dog’s vaccines current, allowing enough lead time before boarding (ideally two weeks for injectable vaccines, at least a week for intranasal), and choosing facilities that require vaccination for all dogs will collectively lower the chances of your dog coming home with that telltale cough.
