Dogs go deaf for many of the same reasons people do: aging, genetics, chronic infections, and exposure to certain drugs or chemicals. Some dogs are born deaf or lose hearing within weeks of birth, while others gradually lose it in their senior years. The cause determines whether the hearing loss is partial or total, one-sided or both, and whether anything can be done about it.
Age-Related Hearing Loss
The most common reason dogs go deaf is simply getting older. Like humans, dogs develop presbycusis, a gradual decline in hearing that comes with age. The process is driven by the slow death of specialized cells inside the cochlea, the spiral-shaped structure in the inner ear that converts sound vibrations into nerve signals. These outer hair cells act as a built-in amplifier, boosting faint sounds so the brain can process them. As dogs age, these cells break down and don’t regenerate.
Long-term studies using brain-based hearing tests show that middle and high frequencies are affected first. That means your older dog may still react to a deep voice or a heavy door closing but miss a whistle, a high-pitched call, or the rustle of a treat bag across the room. Because the loss is gradual, many owners don’t notice it until it’s fairly advanced. A dog that stops coming when called or sleeps through noises that once made them bolt upright is often compensating with visual and vibration cues, masking the decline.
Genetics and Pigmentation
Some dogs are born deaf or lose their hearing in the first few weeks of life, before the ear canal even opens. This congenital deafness is strongly linked to coat color genes, specifically those that produce white or merle patterns. The connection isn’t cosmetic. The same pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) that color a dog’s fur also line a critical structure inside the inner ear called the stria vascularis. This tissue maintains the chemical environment the cochlea needs to function, particularly high potassium levels in the fluid surrounding the sensory hair cells.
In dogs that carry piebald or merle genes, melanocytes may fail to migrate into the inner ear during development. Without them, the stria vascularis degenerates, the hair cells die, and permanent deafness results. This typically happens within the first few weeks after birth.
The breeds most affected reflect this pigmentation link. Out of more than 6,200 Dalmatians tested at Louisiana State University, 28% had some degree of deafness: about 21% in one ear and 7% in both. Australian Cattle Dogs showed a total deafness rate around 11 to 15%, depending on the study population. Other breeds with elevated risk include Bull Terriers, English Setters, and Australian Shepherds. Dogs with blue eyes, which also reflect reduced pigmentation, are at higher risk within these breeds.
Chronic Ear Infections
Ear infections are extremely common in dogs, especially breeds with floppy ears or narrow ear canals. Most infections stay in the outer ear canal, where they cause pain and irritation but don’t threaten hearing. The danger comes when an infection pushes deeper into the middle ear (otitis media) and then into the inner ear (otitis interna), where the delicate structures responsible for hearing and balance live.
Inner ear infections can cause deafness, loss of coordination, head tilting, and facial nerve problems like drooping lips or an inability to blink. When the eardrum ruptures during a prolonged infection, the chances of full recovery drop. Some nerve-related effects, including deafness and persistent head tilt, can linger even after the infection itself clears. Repeated bouts of otitis over months or years create cumulative damage, making chronic ear problems one of the more preventable causes of hearing loss in dogs.
Medications and Toxic Exposure
Certain drugs can poison the inner ear directly. The most well-known culprits are aminoglycoside antibiotics, a class that includes gentamicin, neomycin, and tobramycin. These drugs are effective against serious bacterial infections but can destroy cochlear hair cells as a side effect, particularly at high doses or with prolonged use.
The risk increases when a dog already has an active ear infection or is receiving topical steroids at the same time, because both conditions can increase how much of a drug penetrates into the inner ear. Some older ear-cleaning solutions that contained chlorhexidine also caused deafness before being pulled from the market. The hearing loss from ototoxic drugs is typically sudden in onset and permanent, since the damaged hair cells in a dog’s cochlea don’t grow back.
Other Causes of Sudden Deafness
Beyond infections and drugs, dogs can lose hearing from physical trauma to the head or ear, tumors that press on the auditory nerve, or severe hypothyroidism that affects nerve function. Noise-induced hearing loss is also possible in working dogs exposed to repeated loud sounds, such as gunfire in hunting breeds, though this is less well-documented than in humans. Anesthesia-related hearing loss, while rare, has been reported and is thought to involve temporary or permanent changes in inner ear blood flow.
Signs Your Dog May Be Losing Hearing
Dogs are remarkably good at compensating for hearing loss, which makes early detection tricky. The most common signs include not responding to environmental sounds they once reacted to, being difficult to wake from sleep, and appearing confused about where a sound is coming from. Some dogs bark more or develop a noticeably different-sounding bark. Others stop moving their ears in the attentive, tracking way that hearing dogs naturally do.
Behavioral observation at home is a reasonable starting point, but it’s unreliable on its own. Dogs with hearing in just one ear can appear completely normal because they still localize sound to some degree. The definitive test is a BAER (brainstem auditory evoked response), which measures electrical activity in the brain in response to clicking sounds delivered through small earphones. The test is painless, doesn’t require sedation in most dogs, and can detect deafness in each ear independently. It’s the only way to confirm unilateral deafness, which owners almost never catch on their own. BAER testing is widely available through veterinary neurology clinics and university veterinary hospitals, and the cost is relatively low compared to other diagnostic procedures.
Living With a Deaf Dog
Deaf dogs live full, happy lives, but they need some adjustments to stay safe and well-trained. The core shift is replacing sound-based cues with visual and tactile ones. Many owners use modified American Sign Language signs for basic commands like sit, stay, come, and lie down. One-handed signs work best in practice, since your other hand is often holding a leash. A “thumbs up” serves as a visual marker, the equivalent of a clicker or a verbal “good dog” for a hearing pet.
Startling is the biggest day-to-day challenge. A deaf dog can’t hear you approach, so reaching for their collar or touching them unexpectedly can trigger a fear response. Make sure your dog sees your hand before you make contact. Stomping lightly on the floor to create a vibration is one way to get their attention without startling them.
Safety requires more vigilance. A deaf dog should never be off-leash in an unfenced area, since they can’t hear you call them back and can’t hear approaching cars or other hazards. Long training lines, sometimes called drag lines, give them room to explore while keeping them within your control. Vibration collars (not shock collars) can be trained as a recall cue, though some dogs find the sensation unpleasant. If your dog reacts fearfully to the vibration, a long line is the safer and more humane alternative.
