Dogs reverse sneeze because of a muscle spasm at the back of the mouth where it meets the throat. This spasm temporarily narrows the opening of the windpipe, making it hard for the dog to inhale, which produces that alarming snorting or honking sound. A typical episode lasts about 30 seconds, and in most cases it’s completely harmless, even though it looks and sounds like something is seriously wrong.
What Happens During an Episode
A regular sneeze pushes air out through the nose to clear an irritant. A reverse sneeze does the opposite: your dog rapidly pulls air in through the nose in short, forceful bursts. During an episode, dogs typically stand still, extend their neck, and make a loud snorting or gagging sound that can be mistaken for choking. Their chest and sides may heave with the effort.
The technical name for this is inspiratory paroxysmal respiration. The trigger is a spasm of the soft palate and the muscles at the very back of the throat. When that tissue spasms, it briefly narrows the airway, and the dog’s body responds by trying to suck air in harder, which creates the distinctive noise. Once the spasm relaxes, the dog goes right back to normal as if nothing happened.
Common Triggers
Reverse sneezing often works as a reflex to clear dust, pollen, or other irritants from the upper airway. Think of it as your dog’s version of a big, dramatic sneeze. Common triggers include:
- Airborne irritants: dust, pollen, household cleaners, perfume, cigarette smoke
- Excitement: greeting you at the door, playing hard, or getting worked up
- Leash pressure: pulling too hard against a collar, which puts direct pressure on the throat
- Eating or drinking too fast: which can irritate the soft palate
- Sudden temperature changes: moving from warm air to cold air or vice versa
Many dogs have occasional episodes triggered by one or two of these situations and never need any treatment at all. If you notice a pattern (every time you light a candle, every spring during pollen season), removing or reducing the trigger is usually enough to cut down on episodes significantly.
Why Some Breeds Are More Prone
Flat-faced breeds like Pugs, Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, and Shih Tzus reverse sneeze more often than other dogs. The reason is anatomical: these breeds have shortened skulls but the same amount of soft tissue in their mouths and throats, which means their soft palate is proportionally longer than it should be. That extra tissue is more easily irritated and more likely to spasm. This is part of a broader pattern called brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, which affects breathing in multiple ways for these breeds.
Small breeds in general, not just flat-faced ones, seem to reverse sneeze more frequently than large dogs. Smaller airways are easier to narrow, so even a minor spasm produces a noticeable episode.
What You Can Do During an Episode
Most episodes resolve on their own within 30 seconds. Your dog isn’t in pain and can still get enough air. The best thing you can do is stay calm, because your anxiety can make your dog more stressed and prolong the episode.
A few gentle techniques can help end an episode faster. Lightly massaging your dog’s throat can ease the spasm. Some owners find that briefly and gently covering the nostrils encourages the dog to swallow, which resets the soft palate. You can also try offering a small amount of water or gently blowing on your dog’s face. Speaking in a calm, soothing voice helps too, since excitement and stress can make episodes worse.
When Reverse Sneezing Points to Something Else
Occasional reverse sneezing is normal. But a sudden increase in frequency, episodes that last well over a minute, or reverse sneezing that starts for the first time in an older dog can signal an underlying problem. The list of possible causes beyond simple irritation includes nasal mites (tiny parasites that live in the nasal passages), fungal or bacterial infections, foreign material like a blade of grass stuck in the nasal cavity, or even growths in the nasal passages or throat.
Gastrointestinal issues can also play a role. Dogs that are nauseous or vomiting sometimes reverse sneeze more because stomach contents or acid can irritate the back of the throat.
Reverse Sneezing vs. Tracheal Collapse
One condition that owners sometimes confuse with reverse sneezing is tracheal collapse, which is a more serious problem. The key difference is in the sound and pattern. Tracheal collapse produces a persistent, harsh, dry cough often described as a “goose honk.” It doesn’t come in brief 30-second episodes and then stop. Instead, it’s an ongoing cough that gets worse with exercise, excitement, or heat. In severe cases, dogs with tracheal collapse may wheeze when breathing in, develop blue-tinged gums, or even faint.
A simple test veterinarians use: gently pressing on the throat of a dog with tracheal collapse will easily trigger a cough. Reverse sneezing, by contrast, can’t be triggered this way. If your dog’s episodes sound more like a honking cough than a snorting inhale, or if they’re happening more and more often, that distinction matters.
Signs That Need Veterinary Attention
A handful of red flags suggest the reverse sneezing is a symptom rather than a standalone quirk. Watch for episodes that become dramatically more frequent over days or weeks, nasal discharge (especially if it’s bloody or only comes from one nostril), labored breathing between episodes, reduced energy or reluctance to exercise, or any episode where your dog’s gums or tongue turn pale or blue. A new onset of reverse sneezing in a dog that has never done it before, particularly a middle-aged or older dog, also warrants investigation since it could indicate something lodged in the nasal passage or a growth that needs to be evaluated.
When allergies are the underlying cause, treatment with antihistamines or other allergy medications can reduce the frequency of episodes. For nasal mites or infections, targeted treatment clears up the reverse sneezing once the root problem is addressed. In most cases, though, the answer is reassuringly simple: your dog’s throat got briefly irritated, the spasm passed, and everything is fine.
