Edibles take so long because THC has to travel through your entire digestive system and get processed by your liver before it reaches your brain. When you smoke or vape, THC enters your bloodstream through your lungs in seconds. When you eat it, you’re looking at 30 minutes to 2 hours before you feel anything, with peak effects not arriving until 2 to 3 hours after you swallow.
That delay is also what makes edibles unpredictable and easy to accidentally overdo. Understanding what’s happening inside your body during that waiting period helps explain why the timeline varies so much from person to person.
What Happens After You Swallow an Edible
When you eat a gummy, brownie, or any other THC-infused food, it follows the same path as everything else you eat. It drops into your stomach, gets broken down, moves into your small intestine where THC is absorbed through the intestinal wall, and then travels through your portal vein directly to your liver. Only after the liver processes it does THC finally enter your general bloodstream and make its way to your brain.
Compare that to smoking, where THC crosses from your lungs into your blood and hits your brain within about 10 minutes. With edibles, your digestive system adds a long, variable delay before the drug even gets its first chance to enter circulation.
The Liver Changes THC Into Something Stronger
This is the part most people don’t realize. Your liver doesn’t just slow things down; it chemically transforms THC into a different compound called 11-OH-THC. This metabolite is equally potent or even more potent than the THC you originally consumed. One liver enzyme, CYP2C9, is responsible for roughly 82% of this conversion.
After oral consumption, your blood ends up with higher levels of this transformed compound relative to the original THC. That’s a big reason edibles feel different from smoking, not just slower. The high tends to be more intense and more body-centered because you’re essentially experiencing two psychoactive compounds at once: whatever THC survived the liver plus the new, potent metabolite the liver created.
There’s a tradeoff, though. The liver eliminates a lot of THC before it ever reaches your bloodstream. Only about 4% to 12% of the THC in an edible actually makes it into circulation. The rest gets broken down into inactive waste. This “first-pass” metabolism is why edible doses are measured in milligrams while a single joint might deliver far more THC overall.
Why the Timeline Varies So Much
Clinical data shows just how wide the range can be. In one study, people who took a 25 mg THC capsule on an empty stomach hit peak blood levels around 2.6 hours, but individual results ranged from 1 to 4 hours. At a 50 mg dose, the range stretched from 1 to 6 hours. Subjective effects, meaning when people actually started feeling high, began 30 to 60 minutes after swallowing, with the strongest effects sustained between 90 minutes and 3 hours.
Several factors push that window earlier or later:
- Stomach contents. Eating an edible after a high-fat meal dramatically slows absorption. In one study, taking THC right after a fatty meal pushed peak blood levels from about 1.9 hours to 6.6 hours, roughly a 3.5-fold increase. A full stomach means a gentler, more drawn-out curve. An empty stomach means faster, harder-hitting effects.
- Your genetics. The liver enzyme CYP2C9 does most of the work converting THC, but not everyone produces the same version of it. People who carry a specific genetic variant (CYP2C9*3/*3) retain only about 7% of normal enzyme activity. After an oral dose, these slow metabolizers end up with roughly three times more THC exposure than people with the standard enzyme. That means the same edible can feel dramatically stronger or last much longer depending on your genetic makeup.
- Body composition. THC is highly fat-soluble. It gets rapidly absorbed into fat tissue and then slowly released back into the bloodstream over time. People with more body fat may store more THC temporarily, which can both delay peak effects and extend the tail end of the experience.
- Frequency of use. Regular users process THC differently. The plasma half-life of THC is 1 to 3 days in occasional users but stretches to 5 to 13 days in chronic users, largely because of THC accumulating in fat stores over time.
Why Edibles Last So Much Longer
The slow absorption that delays the onset also extends the duration. When you smoke, blood THC levels spike fast and drop back to baseline within 3 to 6 hours. With edibles, effects don’t return to baseline until 6 to 20 hours after you eat them. The sustained release of THC from your digestive tract, combined with the slow trickle of stored THC from fat tissue, keeps the experience going far longer than inhalation.
Most of the cannabis your body takes in, about 80% to 90%, gets excreted within five days as inactive metabolites. But the psychoactive effects themselves typically wind down within 8 hours for most people, even if trace amounts linger much longer.
Why People Accidentally Take Too Much
The long onset creates a classic trap. You eat an edible, feel nothing after 45 minutes, assume it isn’t working, and take more. But your body is still processing that first dose. By the time both doses hit, you’re dealing with far more THC than you intended.
For anyone new to edibles, a starting dose of 2.5 mg or less of THC is a common recommendation. Waiting at least 2 to 3 hours before considering a second dose gives the first one enough time to reach its full effect. Pain management guidelines suggest starting at 2.5 mg and increasing slowly, with a ceiling of 40 mg per day for chronic pain.
Fast-Acting Edibles and How They Work
A newer category of edibles uses a technology called nanoemulsion to shrink THC particles down to nano-scale. These tiny particles can pass through the mucous membranes in your mouth and gut lining more easily, partially bypassing the slow digestive route and the liver’s first-pass metabolism. The result is an onset time closer to 15 to 30 minutes instead of the usual 1 to 2 hours.
These products also tend to deliver a higher percentage of THC into your bloodstream, so a lower milligram dose can produce stronger effects than the same number on a traditional edible. If you’re used to standard gummies and switch to a nano-emulsified product at the same dose, the experience may be noticeably more intense. Checking the label for terms like “fast-acting,” “nano,” or “rapid onset” will tell you whether you’re dealing with this formulation.
