Why Do Gnats Bite? Causes, Itch, and Prevention

Female gnats bite because they need the protein in your blood to produce eggs. Male gnats don’t bite at all. The tiny flies people call “gnats” actually span several species, and only a few of them are blood feeders. When one does bite you, it’s not out of aggression or hunger in the usual sense. It’s a reproductive necessity.

Blood Feeds Egg Production

The core reason is simple biology. Female biting gnats require proteins found in blood to develop and lay their eggs. Without a blood meal, they can’t reproduce. Blood also shapes the bacterial community in their gut, which plays a role in processing those proteins for egg development. Both males and females feed on nectar and plant sugars for energy, but only females seek out animals or humans for that extra protein boost.

This pattern is common across blood-feeding insects. Mosquitoes work the same way. The bite itself is purely transactional: the female lands, feeds, and leaves to lay her eggs. She may return for additional blood meals across her lifespan, repeating the cycle each time she needs to produce a new batch of eggs.

Not All Gnats Bite

The word “gnat” gets applied loosely to a lot of tiny flying insects, and most of them are completely harmless. The ones that bite fall into a few specific groups:

  • Biting midges (no-see-ums): These belong to the family Ceratopogonidae and are the most common biters people encounter. At roughly 1/16 of an inch long, they’re so small that most people never actually see one feeding on them, which is how they earned the nickname “no-see-ums.”
  • Black flies: Slightly larger than midges, these breed near running water and are notorious for painful bites, especially in wooded or mountainous areas.
  • Sand flies: Found in tropical and subtropical regions, these are medically significant in some parts of the world because they can transmit diseases.

Fungus gnats, eye gnats, and drain flies are all non-biters. Fungus gnats are the tiny dark flies you see hovering around houseplants or damp soil. Eye gnats (about 1/8 inch) are attracted to moisture around your eyes and face but don’t pierce skin. If something tiny is flying around your kitchen, it’s almost certainly not a species that bites.

How the Bite Actually Works

Biting gnats don’t puncture skin the way a mosquito does with its needle-like mouthpart. Instead, midges and black flies use small, serrated mouthparts that cut into the surface of the skin, creating a tiny wound. Blood pools in this opening, and the gnat feeds from it. This slicing action is one reason gnat bites often feel sharper and more immediately painful than mosquito bites.

As the gnat feeds, it injects saliva into the wound. This saliva contains a cocktail of compounds designed to keep blood flowing. Some prevent your blood from clotting, while others block platelets from clumping together to seal the wound. One compound works similarly to an enzyme found in bed bug saliva, breaking down molecules that would otherwise signal your body to stop bleeding. Another helps the saliva spread through surrounding tissue, giving the gnat better access to blood. All of this happens in seconds.

What Draws Them to You

Biting gnats find you through a combination of chemical and sensory cues, working at different distances. Carbon dioxide from your breath acts as a long-range signal, alerting gnats that a potential host is nearby. But CO2 alone rarely causes them to land. Once they get closer, within roughly a meter, other cues take over.

Your skin gives off a complex blend of chemicals that biting insects are finely tuned to detect. Lactic acid, a natural component of sweat, is one of the strongest attractants. Pyruvic acid (also in sweat) plays a supporting role. Research on blood-feeding flies has shown that a three-part blend of lactic acid, pyruvic acid, and a compound from the citric acid cycle called 2-ketoglutaric acid dramatically increases landing rates compared to any single chemical alone. In lab tests, this blend triggered landing responses nearly six times higher than a control. Heat and visual contrast (dark clothing against a light background, for example) also help gnats zero in on you at close range.

This explains why some people seem to get bitten more than others. Differences in sweat composition, body temperature, and even the bacteria living on your skin change the chemical profile you emit. Heavy exercise, which raises body temperature and increases lactic acid output, can make you more attractive to biting gnats.

Why Gnat Bites Itch and How Long They Last

The itch comes from your immune system, not the bite itself. When gnat saliva enters your skin, your body recognizes it as a foreign substance and releases histamine to the area. Histamine causes the blood vessels around the bite to dilate and become leaky, producing the familiar red, swollen, itchy bump. This is an immune overreaction to proteins in the saliva, not actual tissue damage from the bite.

Most gnat bites cause minor swelling and itching that clears up within a few days. Some bites take a week or two to fully heal, particularly if you scratch them. Scratching breaks the skin and can introduce bacteria, leading to secondary infections. This is the most common complication of any insect bite. In rare cases, people with heightened sensitivity may develop larger welts or more prolonged reactions, but serious complications from gnat bites in temperate climates are uncommon.

When and Where Bites Are Most Likely

Biting midges and black flies are most active during dawn and dusk, though their behavior shifts with weather conditions. Different species peak at different times. Some are most active in late morning, others in late afternoon, and when multiple species overlap in the same area, you can face biting pressure across most of the daylight hours. Research on biting flies in tropical environments found overlapping high-activity periods spanning from mid-morning through early evening.

Humidity matters. Biting midges thrive in moist conditions and are most abundant near standing water, marshes, and coastal areas. Wind is your ally: no-see-ums are weak fliers, and even a light breeze makes it difficult for them to reach you. Calm, humid evenings near water are prime conditions for getting swarmed. Hot, dry, windy days offer natural protection.

Repellents That Work on Gnats

Standard insect repellents are effective against biting gnats, but not all active ingredients perform equally. DEET is the broadest option, with documented effectiveness against biting midges, black flies, and fleas. Picaridin works well on midges and chiggers in addition to mosquitoes. Oil of lemon eucalyptus (listed as PMD on labels) is the most effective plant-derived option, registered for use against black flies, gnats, no-see-ums, and mosquitoes at concentrations of 8 to 10 percent. IR3535, found in some Avon products, covers a similarly broad range including midges, black flies, and sand flies.

Beyond repellents, physical barriers help. Fine-mesh screens (standard window screens have gaps large enough for no-see-ums to pass through), long sleeves during peak activity hours, and fans on porches or patios all reduce exposure. Since biting midges breed in moist soil and standing water, reducing these around your home cuts down local populations over time.
