Most burping and farting comes down to two things: swallowed air and bacterial fermentation in your gut. The average person passes gas 14 to 23 times a day, and some amount of burping after meals is completely normal. If you feel like you’re doing both more than usual, the cause is almost always something you can identify and change, whether it’s an eating habit, a food trigger, or an underlying digestive issue.
Where All That Gas Comes From
Your body produces gas through two distinct pathways, and each one tends to show up differently. Burping is mostly about swallowed air. Every time you eat, drink, or even swallow saliva, a small amount of air goes down with it. That air sits in your stomach until it rises back up. The volume of swallowed air increases dramatically with certain habits: eating fast, talking while eating, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, using straws, drinking carbonated beverages, and smoking. Some people swallow air as a nervous habit even when they’re not eating or drinking.
Farting, on the other hand, is primarily driven by bacteria in your large intestine. When food reaches your colon without being fully digested or absorbed in the small intestine, gut bacteria break it down through fermentation. This process produces hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide. Bacteria are the sole source of hydrogen and methane in your intestines, so the more undigested material that reaches your colon, the more gas you’ll produce.
Foods That Produce the Most Gas
Certain carbohydrates are especially hard to digest and end up feeding gut bacteria instead of being absorbed. These are sometimes grouped under the term FODMAPs, which stands for fermentable short-chain carbohydrates. They show up in foods you probably eat every day:
- Beans, lentils, onions, garlic, and wheat products contain plant fibers called oligosaccharides that pass through your small intestine largely intact, giving colon bacteria plenty to ferment.
- Dairy products contain lactose, a sugar that many adults can’t fully break down. Undigested lactose ferments in the colon and produces gas, bloating, and sometimes cramping.
- Fruit contains fructose, which some people absorb poorly. Apples, pears, and mangoes are particularly high in fructose.
- Sugar alcohols (sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol) are commonly used as artificial sweeteners in sugar-free gum, candy, and protein bars. They’re also found naturally in some fruits. Your body can’t fully absorb them, so they ferment.
For some people, the byproducts of this fermentation cause not just gas but also bloating, abdominal pain, and visible distension. If you notice a pattern between certain foods and your symptoms, a temporary low-FODMAP elimination diet can help you pinpoint the specific triggers. The idea is to remove all high-FODMAP foods for a few weeks, then reintroduce them one category at a time to see which ones cause problems.
Habits That Make It Worse
Before looking at your diet, it’s worth checking your everyday habits. These are the most common reasons people swallow excess air without realizing it:
- Eating or drinking too fast. Rushing through meals is one of the biggest sources of swallowed air. Slowing down and chewing thoroughly makes a noticeable difference for many people.
- Carbonated drinks. Beer, soda, and sparkling water release carbon dioxide directly into your stomach.
- Gum and hard candy. Both increase your swallowing rate, and each swallow brings down a small pocket of air.
- Smoking. Inhaling smoke also means inhaling and swallowing air.
- Poorly fitting dentures. They cause you to swallow excess air with every bite and sip.
- Stress and anxiety. Eating while stressed or on the run increases air swallowing. Some people also develop a habit of gulping air when anxious, even between meals.
Try making meals a slower, more relaxed occasion. If you’re a gum chewer or a daily soda drinker, cutting those habits for a week or two is a simple experiment that can reveal how much they were contributing.
Digestive Conditions That Cause Excess Gas
If habit changes and dietary adjustments don’t help, a few medical conditions can drive persistent, excessive gas.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) happens when bacteria that normally live in the colon migrate into the small intestine, where they ferment food before it can be properly absorbed. This creates gas, bloating, and often diarrhea or abdominal pain. Diagnosis typically involves a breath test that measures hydrogen or methane levels after you drink a glucose solution. A rapid spike in either gas suggests overgrowth. In practice, doctors sometimes treat SIBO based on symptoms and medical history alone, even without a definitive test result.
Gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach empties too slowly, can cause excessive belching along with nausea, fullness after small meals, and sometimes vomiting. Diabetes is the most common known cause, because high blood sugar can damage the nerve that controls stomach muscles. When the stomach doesn’t empty on schedule, food sits longer and produces more gas that rises back up.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) frequently involves gas and bloating as core symptoms, often alongside alternating constipation and diarrhea. Lactose intolerance and fructose malabsorption can also fly under the radar for years, causing daily gas that people assume is just normal for them.
What Actually Helps Reduce Gas
The most effective approach is identifying and addressing the source, whether that’s a habit, a food, or a condition. But several over-the-counter options can help manage symptoms in the meantime.
Products containing alpha-galactosidase (sold under brand names like Beano) break down the specific carbohydrates in beans, bran, and fruit before bacteria can ferment them. In clinical testing, patients taking these enzyme supplements showed significant improvement in bloating and gas compared to placebo. They work best when taken right before a meal containing the trigger foods.
Simethicone, the active ingredient in Gas-X, is widely recommended but has limited evidence for everyday flatulence. It works by breaking up gas bubbles in the stomach, which can relieve that uncomfortable pressure feeling, but studies haven’t shown a clear benefit for reducing overall gas production.
Probiotics have shown more promise. In one trial, a multi-strain probiotic achieved a 50 percent reduction in flatulence in more than half of participants after four weeks, compared to a third of those on placebo. Results vary by strain and person, but they’re worth trying if your gas seems tied to overall gut imbalance.
For the smell specifically (rather than the volume), bismuth subsalicylate binds over 95 percent of sulfur gases in the gut. Activated charcoal pads worn inside underwear absorb 55 to 77 percent of sulfur gases, which is a surprisingly practical solution if odor is your main concern.
Signs Something More Serious Is Going On
Gas alone, even a lot of it, is rarely a sign of something dangerous. But certain accompanying symptoms shift the picture. Sudden changes in your gas patterns, unexplained weight loss, blood in your stool, persistent abdominal pain, or new constipation or diarrhea alongside increased gas all warrant a conversation with your doctor. These combinations can point to conditions like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or other issues that need specific diagnosis and treatment rather than dietary tinkering alone.
