Why Do I Get Bitten by Mosquitoes More Than Others?

Some people genuinely do attract more mosquitoes than others, and the difference is surprisingly large. Studies using identical twins estimate that about 62% of your attractiveness to mosquitoes is heritable, meaning the bulk of what makes you a target is baked into your genetics. That genetic influence shapes your body chemistry, your skin’s microbial community, and the cocktail of gases and odors you emit, all of which mosquitoes use to find you.

Your Skin Bacteria Play a Major Role

The specific mix of microorganisms living on your skin produces volatile compounds that mosquitoes either love or ignore. A study published in PLOS ONE found that people who were highly attractive to mosquitoes had 2.6 times more Staphylococcus bacteria on their skin compared to people mosquitoes largely avoided. The less-attractive group, meanwhile, had about three times more Pseudomonas bacteria.

Here’s the interesting part: it wasn’t just which bacteria were present but how diverse the community was. People with a greater variety of bacterial species on their skin tended to be less attractive to mosquitoes. If your skin microbiome is dominated by a few specific types rather than a broad mix, you may be sending out a stronger chemical signal. You can’t easily change your skin microbiome, but this helps explain why two people sitting side by side can have completely different experiences with mosquitoes.

The Chemical Signals Your Body Sends

Mosquitoes track you through a sequence of cues at different distances. Carbon dioxide from your breath is the first long-range signal. Larger people and pregnant women exhale more CO2, which is one reason they tend to get bitten more often. Pregnancy also raises body temperature and changes the blend of volatile compounds on the skin, creating a triple effect.

Once a mosquito gets closer, it picks up on chemicals like lactic acid, ammonia, and certain ketones that evaporate from your skin. These compounds are natural byproducts of your metabolism, and everyone produces them in different amounts. Exercise temporarily increases lactic acid on your skin, which is why you might notice more bites after a workout or while doing yard work on a hot day. The specific ratio of these chemicals matters too. Lab research shows mosquitoes are significantly more attracted to certain blends of lactic acid and ketones together than to any single compound alone.

Body Heat Matters, but Only Up Close

Mosquitoes have specialized heat-sensing receptors on their antennae that detect the warmth of a potential host. But thermal cues don’t work the way you might expect. A mosquito can’t distinguish between a warm object far away and a cooler object nearby, because both produce similar amounts of thermal energy at the receptor. Heat becomes useful only at short range, and typically only after the mosquito has already locked onto CO2 or skin odors. In other words, body heat confirms you’re a living target rather than serving as the initial beacon. Still, if you naturally run warmer than the people around you, it gives mosquitoes one more reason to choose you over someone else once they’re in the neighborhood.

What About Blood Type?

The idea that Type O blood attracts more mosquitoes is one of the most persistent claims online, but the evidence doesn’t hold up. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has stated directly that there is currently no evidence blood types make a difference in attractiveness to mosquitoes. While an older, small study once suggested a preference for Type O, the finding hasn’t been reliably replicated. Your blood type is almost certainly not the reason you’re getting bitten more.

Drinking Beer Makes You a Bigger Target

Alcohol consumption is one of the few lifestyle factors with solid experimental evidence behind it. A controlled study found that drinking beer increased the percentage of mosquitoes that became active and oriented toward a person’s odor from about 35% to 47%. Even more telling, 65% of mosquitoes flew toward beer drinkers compared to baseline levels before drinking. The researchers ruled out the obvious explanations: the increased attractiveness wasn’t caused by higher CO2 output or elevated skin temperature after drinking. Something about how alcohol changes your body chemistry or the volatile compounds you emit makes you more detectable, though the exact mechanism remains unclear. This effect was observed with just a single beer.

The Colors You Wear Change Your Visibility

Mosquitoes don’t just smell you. They also see you, and they have clear color preferences. Research from the University of Washington found that after detecting CO2, mosquitoes actively fly toward red, orange, black, and cyan objects while ignoring green, purple, blue, and white. Without a CO2 trigger, they ignored all colors equally, which means the visual preference only kicks in once they’ve already caught a whiff of your breath.

This has a practical implication most people overlook: human skin, regardless of tone, reflects long-wavelength light in the red-orange spectrum. So every person essentially looks “red” to a mosquito. But your clothing can either amplify or reduce that signal. Wearing a dark shirt on a summer evening is like adding a spotlight. When researchers placed a green filter over exposed skin or had subjects wear green gloves, mosquitoes that had already been primed by CO2 lost interest. White and light green clothing effectively makes you harder to spot.

What You Can Actually Do About It

You can’t change your genetics, your skin bacteria, or how much CO2 you exhale, but a few practical choices can meaningfully reduce how many bites you get:

  • Choose light-colored clothing. White, light green, and pale blue are less visible to mosquitoes than black, red, or orange.
  • Use an EPA-registered repellent. Products with less than 10% active ingredient typically protect for only one to two hours. Higher concentrations last longer, though effectiveness tends to plateau around 50% concentration for DEET. Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are also effective alternatives.
  • Time your outdoor activity. Showering after exercise removes the lactic acid buildup that draws mosquitoes to your skin.
  • Skip the beer if you’re outdoors at dusk. Even one drink measurably increases your attractiveness.
  • Cover exposed skin. Long sleeves in light colors address both the chemical and visual cues mosquitoes rely on.

If you’ve always suspected you get bitten more than the people around you, you’re probably right. The combination of your unique skin chemistry, bacterial profile, metabolic output, and even your wardrobe creates a personal scent signature that mosquitoes either zero in on or pass over. Most of that signature is inherited, which is why the pattern follows you everywhere, not just in certain locations or seasons.
