- Positive self-talk: Simple, direct statements like “I am safe right now” or “This feeling will pass” can interrupt the spiral. Speak to yourself the way you’d reassure a friend.
- Visualization: Picture a place that feels safe and calm, and mentally walk through its sensory details. The warmth of sunlight, the texture of sand, the sound of water. Engaging multiple imagined senses pulls your brain away from threat-scanning mode.
For your environment, avoid bright screens for two to three hours before bed. If you use a night light, choose a red or warm-toned one, since red light has the least impact on melatonin production. Keeping a low level of ambient sound, like a fan or white noise, gives your brain consistent auditory input that reduces the likelihood of a single random sound triggering your startle reflex.
