Why Do I Have Bad Gas? Causes and Solutions

Passing gas is completely normal. The average person does it about 15 times a day, though anywhere from a handful to 40 times falls within the healthy range. Your intestines produce between 500 and 2,000 milliliters of gas daily. So if you’re wondering why your gas seems excessive or particularly foul, the answer usually comes down to what you’re eating, how you’re eating, or how your gut bacteria are processing what you give them.

How Your Gut Produces Gas

Your large intestine doesn’t produce digestive enzymes on its own. Instead, it houses enormous colonies of bacteria that break down whatever your small intestine couldn’t fully absorb. When these bacteria ferment carbohydrates (especially fiber, starches, and sugars), the major byproducts are hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane. This fermentation is the primary source of intestinal gas.

The smell is a separate issue. Most of that hydrogen and carbon dioxide is odorless. The stink comes from sulfur-containing compounds, particularly hydrogen sulfide, which bacteria produce when they break down sulfur-rich foods like eggs, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower), garlic, onions, and meat. A small amount of hydrogen sulfide goes a long way, which is why even modest dietary changes can make your gas noticeably worse.

Foods That Cause the Most Gas

Certain short-chain carbohydrates are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, which means they arrive in the colon mostly intact and become a feast for gas-producing bacteria. Researchers group these under the acronym FODMAPs, and they show up in a surprising number of everyday foods:

  • Beans and lentils are high in a sugar called GOS that humans can’t break down on their own.
  • Wheat, rye, and barley contain fructans, a type of fiber that ferments readily.
  • Onions, garlic, and certain vegetables like artichokes and asparagus are also fructan-heavy.
  • Fruits like apples, pears, and watermelon contain excess fructose or sorbitol, both of which can trigger gas when they reach the colon undigested.
  • Dairy products cause gas specifically because of lactose (more on that below).
  • Sugar-free products sweetened with sorbitol, xylitol, or erythritol are notorious gas producers because these sugar alcohols resist digestion almost entirely.

You don’t need to avoid all of these. Most people have a few specific triggers rather than sensitivity to every category. Paying attention to which meals precede your worst episodes is the simplest way to narrow it down.

Lactose Intolerance Is Extremely Common

About 65 percent of the global population loses some ability to digest lactose after infancy. The enzyme that breaks down lactose, produced in the lining of the small intestine, gradually decreases in most people as they age. When undigested lactose reaches the colon, bacteria ferment it rapidly, producing gas, bloating, and often diarrhea within 30 minutes to 2 hours of eating dairy.

The prevalence varies dramatically by ancestry. Among people of East Asian descent, 70 to 100 percent are affected. It’s also very common in people of West African, Arab, Greek, and Italian descent. Only about 5 percent of people with Northern European ancestry lose lactose tolerance. If your gas seems tied to milk, cheese, ice cream, or cream-based sauces, this is one of the first things worth investigating.

Swallowed Air Adds Up

Not all gas comes from bacterial fermentation. A significant portion is simply air you swallow, which either comes back up as a burp or travels through the digestive tract and exits the other end. Common habits that increase air swallowing include eating too fast, talking while eating, chewing gum, sucking on hard candy, drinking through straws, consuming carbonated beverages, and smoking.

These are some of the easiest causes to fix. Chewing food slowly, finishing one bite before taking the next, skipping the straw, and cutting back on fizzy drinks can reduce gas volume noticeably within days.

When a Gut Condition Is Behind It

If your gas is persistent, severe, and doesn’t clearly track with specific foods, an underlying condition may be involved. A few possibilities are worth knowing about.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

Normally, most of your gut bacteria live in the large intestine. In small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), bacteria colonize the small intestine in abnormal numbers or types. Because food meets these bacteria much earlier in the digestive process, fermentation happens before nutrients are properly absorbed. The classic symptoms are bloating, excessive gas, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. More severe cases can cause fatty, foul-smelling stools because fat absorption gets disrupted.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS and excessive gas frequently overlap. People with IBS often have heightened sensitivity to normal amounts of intestinal gas, meaning the same volume that wouldn’t bother someone else causes real pain and bloating. IBS also tends to involve altered gut motility, so gas may move through the intestines more slowly and accumulate.

Celiac Disease and Other Malabsorption Issues

Any condition that prevents your small intestine from absorbing nutrients properly will send more undigested material to the colon, where bacteria convert it to gas. Celiac disease, pancreatic insufficiency, and certain infections can all produce this pattern.

What Actually Helps Reduce Gas

The most effective approach depends on the cause. For gas triggered by high-FODMAP foods, a temporary elimination diet (cutting the major categories for a few weeks, then reintroducing them one at a time) can identify your personal triggers without requiring you to avoid everything permanently.

Enzyme supplements can help in specific situations. Products containing alpha-galactosidase (the enzyme in Beano) are clinically effective at reducing bloating and gas from fermentable carbohydrates like those found in beans, bran, and certain fruits. Lactase supplements work similarly for people with lactose intolerance, providing the enzyme your body no longer makes enough of.

Simethicone, the active ingredient in Gas-X, is widely recommended but the evidence is less convincing. It works by breaking up gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, which can relieve the feeling of pressure. However, clinical trials haven’t shown a benefit for ordinary flatulence. It may help more with the bloated, distended feeling than with actual gas frequency.

For swallowed air, the fixes are behavioral: slow down at meals, ditch the gum, swap carbonated drinks for still ones, and avoid talking with your mouth full.

Signs Something More Serious Is Going On

Gas alone, even when it’s frequent and embarrassing, is rarely dangerous. But certain accompanying symptoms shift the picture. Unintentional weight loss, blood in your stool, persistent diarrhea or constipation, vomiting, or heartburn alongside your gas all warrant a medical evaluation. These combinations can point to malabsorption disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, or other conditions that need treatment beyond dietary changes.
