Dark circles under the eyes usually come from a combination of thin skin, visible blood vessels, and pigmentation changes rather than a single cause. The area beneath your eyes has some of the thinnest skin on your face, making it far more transparent than surrounding tissue. That transparency means anything happening just below the surface, from pooling blood to lost volume, shows through more easily than it would anywhere else on your body.
Why Under-Eye Skin Shows Everything
The skin beneath your eyes lacks the thick cushion of fat and collagen that protects other parts of your face. While measurements vary by individual, facial skin overall ranges from about 1.5 mm to 2 mm thick, and the under-eye area sits on the thinner end of that spectrum with very little subcutaneous fat beneath it. That’s why blood vessels, muscle, and bone can create a shadowed or discolored look that doesn’t appear on your cheeks or forehead. As you age and lose collagen and fat padding in this area, the effect becomes more pronounced.
The Four Types of Dark Circles
Dermatologists classify under-eye darkness into four categories: pigmented, vascular, structural, and mixed. Most people have a combination, which is why dark circles can be so stubborn to treat.
Pigmented dark circles result from excess melanin production in the skin beneath the eyes. This is more common in people with darker skin tones and can be triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes, or genetics. The discoloration tends to look brown or dark brown.
Vascular dark circles happen when blood vessels beneath the thin under-eye skin become visible. These often look blue, purple, or reddish. They’re more noticeable in people with fair or thin skin and tend to worsen with fatigue, dehydration, or anything that dilates blood vessels.
Structural dark circles aren’t really about skin color at all. They’re caused by the shape of your face. A deep tear trough (the groove running from the inner corner of your eye down toward your cheek) creates a shadow that looks like discoloration. Puffy eyelids can also cast shadows that mimic dark circles. Volume loss from aging is one of the most common reasons dark circles seem to appear or worsen in your 30s and 40s.
Mixed dark circles involve two or more of these mechanisms at the same time, and this is what most people actually have.
Common Causes You Can Control
Sleep deprivation is the classic culprit, and for good reason. When you don’t sleep enough, your body retains more fluid and your blood vessels dilate, both of which make the under-eye area look darker and puffier. But sleep isn’t the only lifestyle factor at play.
A high-salt diet causes water retention throughout your body, and the loose tissue under your eyes is one of the first places that extra fluid accumulates. This creates puffiness that casts shadows and makes existing discoloration more obvious. Alcohol and dehydration have a similar effect by altering fluid balance and dilating blood vessels.
Sun exposure stimulates melanin production, which can darken the under-eye area over time. If you wear sunscreen on your face but skip the area directly beneath your eyes, that skin is getting more UV damage than you realize.
Screen fatigue matters too. Staring at screens for long stretches increases blood flow to the eye area, which can make vascular dark circles more prominent by the end of the day.
Allergies and Nasal Congestion
If your dark circles get worse during allergy season or when you have a cold, congestion is likely the driver. When the lining of your nasal passages swells, it slows blood flow through the veins around your sinuses. Those veins sit close to the surface of the skin under your eyes, and when blood pools in them, the area looks darker and puffy. Doctors sometimes call this effect “allergic shiners.”
The key clue that allergies are involved: the darkness is accompanied by itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, or a stuffy nose. Treating the underlying congestion, whether with antihistamines or nasal sprays, often reduces the discoloration noticeably.
Iron Deficiency and Other Health Factors
Iron deficiency anemia can make dark circles worse through a straightforward mechanism. When your body doesn’t have enough iron, your red blood cells carry less oxygen. Less oxygen reaching the skin means the under-eye area looks paler or more washed out, which makes the blood vessels beneath that thin skin stand out more. If your dark circles came on alongside fatigue, dizziness, or feeling short of breath, it’s worth having your iron levels checked with a simple blood test.
Thyroid disorders, eczema, and chronic sinus problems can also contribute. Repeated rubbing of the eyes, whether from allergies or eczema, triggers inflammation that increases pigmentation over time.
Genetics and Skin Tone
For many people, the honest answer is simply genetics. If your parents had dark circles, you’re likely to have them too. This is especially true for pigmented dark circles, which are strongly influenced by your natural melanin distribution. People with deeper skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation under the eyes, while people with very fair skin tend to see more vascular darkness because their blood vessels are easier to spot through translucent skin.
Inherited facial bone structure also plays a role. Deep-set eyes naturally create more shadow in the under-eye area, producing the appearance of dark circles even when the skin itself is perfectly healthy.
What Actually Helps
The right approach depends on which type of dark circle you’re dealing with. For vascular dark circles, cold compresses or chilled spoons held against the eyes can shrink dilated blood vessels and temporarily reduce the appearance. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated on an extra pillow helps prevent fluid from pooling under your eyes overnight.
For pigmented dark circles, sun protection is the most important step. A broad-spectrum sunscreen applied to the under-eye area daily, along with sunglasses, can prevent further darkening. Topical products containing vitamin C or retinoids can help fade existing pigmentation over time, though results take weeks to months to become visible.
Caffeine-based eye creams work by temporarily constricting blood vessels, which can reduce both puffiness and the bluish tint of vascular dark circles. The effect is temporary but noticeable for many people.
For structural dark circles caused by volume loss or a deep tear trough, topical products won’t make much difference because the problem isn’t the skin itself. Hyaluronic acid fillers injected into the tear trough can restore lost volume, with results lasting an average of about 11 months and sometimes up to 18 months. However, this area carries specific risks. The most common complications include bruising, swelling, and a blue-gray discoloration called the Tyndall effect, where the filler becomes visible through thin skin. Light-skinned people with thin skin are most susceptible to this side effect, and it can worsen with repeat injections or as filler shifts position over time.
When Dark Circles Change Suddenly
Gradual dark circles that have been present for years are almost always cosmetic. But a sudden change deserves attention. Dark circles that appear rapidly alongside weight changes, extreme fatigue, or swelling elsewhere on your body could signal a thyroid issue, kidney problem, or nutritional deficiency. Dark circles that affect only one eye, or that are accompanied by pain or vision changes, warrant a prompt medical evaluation. In most cases, though, the darkness under your eyes is a normal variation driven by your genetics, sleep habits, and skin type rather than a sign of anything dangerous.
